Welcome! The purpose of this group is to provide an open forum for users of Family Historian to share tips and advice on using it, with other users. Everyone should feel welcome to contribute, and to seek advice and give it.
Tip: Members receive each post as an email, by default. If your email program allows it, you are recommended to accept an individual email for each message posted to the group (this is the default ‘Subscription’ setting), but create a folder within your email program to store the group emails you receive. You can create a (mail) Message Rule within most email programs, which ensures that all email messages received from the group are automatically moved to this folder. The emails you want to move are ones where the ‘To’ line contains family-historian@groups.io (i.e. ones that were originally sent to the group, and then forwarded to you). This has the advantage that group messages are kept conveniently grouped together, while still being easy to read.

Exporting gedcom file

hello
i’ve recently done a DNA test with Ancestry and want to export part of my family tree to Ancestry to try and find some cousins. I’ve followed the FH instructions, made a copy, removed all sources and notes, leaving the very bare bones of the tree, but when I try to upload it I get a reply ‘not a valid GEDCOM file’. can anyone please help me or let me know what I should be doing? thanks in advance regards Julia

The reason you are getting the error is that FH uses the Unicode UTF16 character encoding internally. That is recognised by most products, so needs to be the UTF8 character encoding. That is an option in FH but there are also other GEDCOM adjustments that are needed for Ancestry.

Thank you John and Mike for your help. I’ve downloaded the plug in, I had been using File/Import Export/Gedcom file previously. But it’s worked and the edited tree is now on Ancestry!

Adoptive parents vs Birth parents

One of my wife's cousins has lived his whole life as an adopted person, and is built into my family tree as such (he is now 60 years old). Two years ago he discovered his birth parents and now has a fair bit of info on them, having met them in person.
How can both sets of parents be reflected on my family tree?

Have you reviewed the Knowledge base article for Adoption If you want to add both sets of Parents on to a diagram you can simply add a second diagram creating a chart.

Family Historian on Linux
Hi
Just wanted to say what a great program! I have been using it for 2 years on and off, and in my opinion is by far the best. I have used Family Tree Maker and TNG software but I always return to this product. My only gripe is that now I am on a Linux operating system I am unable to use this fantastic program, despite trying to make it work it in WINE. I abandoned Windows products over 6 months ago (I won't go into a protracted missive as to why, plenty of stuff out there to back up my reasons). It would be nice if perhaps in the future, someone (or the developer) may offer an option to make this work in the Linux operating system. Until then, I am using my backup web based Tribalpages option. IF there is a way now to make this superb program work within Linux, perhaps some kind folk can offer a solution. Many thanks.

I have an Apple mac and have been using Crossover (which uses Wine) for a number of years with great success. I've found it very easy to install and use and FH works extremely well on it. Michael

I have successfully been running 99.?%? of fh functionality on Linux for almost two and a half years (specifically Lubuntu 16.04 and then 18.04 with Wine 4.0.3 - emulating Windows 7) Wine 5.0 has recently become available.
I installed Wine through the Software repository and then downloaded the FH instal program into the download directory of my "wine C drive". Then I seem to remember that I ran the install program by right clicking on the file and selecting "Open With > Wine Windows Program Loader". In genealogical terms I got Bob as my mother's brother! I then tweaked things to get the Menu option that I wanted copying the set up for another program that installed with Wine (possibly notepad or even the default FH menu option which was deep in the Wine Menu system off the Start Button - I cannot now recall, but it was a minimal hassle tweak) and moved directories around to get them where I wanted them (using simlinks/shortcuts to maintain things the same as far as the program was concerned) The FH supplied pdf driver does not work under Wine but other options are available under Linux. Other than that I am not aware of any FH problems Some dialogue boxes can be a touch messy because the fonts on the buttons are a bit too big for the text to fit. Expanding the Dialogue box often cures this and if I fiddled with the Wine Configuration (for me; Start Menu>q4wine>Default>system>winecfg) I might improve it further. David

Hello,
I'm a little puzzled by this. I have uploaded several small Gedcom trees to Ancestry DNA, but I've never (knowingly!) installed any plug-ins. My version of FH is 6.2.7 - which i think is the most recent - and under the Export Gedcom file menu it seems to only offer UFH-8. I recall just following the Ancestry (and FamilyTreeDNA, for that ,matter) instructions and after a false start resulting from not omitting the media. all went very well. Cheers, Brian

Hi Brian, Yes, if your trees are uncomplicated and you only want to use Ancestry DNA then File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File will often be OK. As you say, you must remember to choose UTF-8 and omit all the Media.
But there are many features of FH that are not supported by Ancestry. e.g. Custom Attributes, the Age and Address fields, Fact Witnesses, Place records, etc. Also to enable Census matching, Ancestry prefers Residence facts to Census events. The Export Gedcom File Plugin has an Ancestry setting that handles all that and more, as well as the UTF-8 and exclude Media modes.

Thanks, Mike. Although my uploads to Ancestry etc are pretty basic and purely to enable any DNA matches to get some idea of who's who, I think I'll get the plug-in and be on the safe side.

Ancestral Sources

I'm using Ancestral Sources to enter Census entries to FH. Can someone tell me where the "Text" element transfers to in FH as I can't see it? Its probably really simple once you know! Many thanks Julie

Hi Julie, It depends on whether your have set Ancestral Sources to use Method 1 (the default) or Method 2. But assuming Method 1 then that Auto Text is added to the Source record Text From Source field. It should be edited to be an accurate transcript of the Source document, as Ancestral Sources only attempts a machine generated similarity.
