Marking DNA-proven ancestors in diagrams

jane.merkel@...

Hi there

I would like to mark DNA proven ancestors as a default function in all diagrams. I am thinking something like defining a new attribute “DNA proven” which then changes e.g. the background colour in the boxes in all diagrams. I’ve already defined the custom attribute but I’m now stuck at how to change the background colour depending on whether the individual has this attribute or not.

Or is there an easier or better way of achieving what I’m after?

Kind regards

Jane Merkel

Thank you, Neil and Mike.
Lots to take in.  I can see this is going to be a long-term project!

Re: Photos,

I have replied with a couple of screenshots to help solve James problem, but they have not got through, so here is the first one again.

In the Media tab. with the missing Media item selected, click the large blue arrow to Go To Media Record which should look like this:

A screenshot of a cell phone

Description automatically generated

What is listed in the File: box? Please tell me.

That specifies the folder and filename where the photo media file should exist.

If it says Media\... as in the screenshot above then it should not go missing.

If it is somewhere on your C:\ drive then I suspect you have moved or deleted the file after adding it to the Media tab.

When you add photos you should get a dialogue with Copy File(s) to; options as shown below.

Which option do you choose? <Default Location within Project Folder> or <Don’t copy – link only>

Those two options determine whether you get the Media\... or C:\ drive File: link above.

James,

Can you please explain exactly what you mean by missing.

When you open the Media tab are they listed but the image is not displayed?

When you add the photos do you accept the option to copy them into the Media folder of the Project?

OR do you leave them outside the Project?

If the latter, you must take care not to move or delete those photos.

ORA works by understanding what information each web site presents and where to find it. This is a constantly moving target and to be honest paying £2 per month (less than the cost a pint of beer in the UK) for the privilege of John Cardinal (the program author) keeping on top of this ever-mutating monster is a jolly good deal in my view.

ORA has the potential to save hours of manual data entry. It may require a bit of effort and learning on the user's part to get the best from it, but the end result is worth it.

I have no connection with John Cardinal, other than being a satisfied user of ORA and his other genealogy companion programs.

Re: Making a book

Is it only possible to use information already saved in my project?

Mostly yes, but you can also add Free Text pages, and leave Blank Pages for adding material externally.

Can I insert photos that I may not have used in the project?

Yes, either add them to Blank Pages afterwards, or insert them into a Blank Diagram to add to the book, or add them as a Media record and produce a Media Report.

How do I divide the text into chapters?

Any Report that you add from the Available Items on the left becomes a chapter.

The Edit button does not seem to cover these topics.

In the Edit Book dialogue click the Help button to get useful advice and follow its links to other help pages.

In the Publish > Books command there should be The Munros in the 20th Century book listed that you can investigate.

Re: Set program to open on focus page

FH normally opens on the Focus window by default, unless you have deliberately changed this. The alternative is to open on the Records Window.  Use Tools>Preferences>Startup and un-tick ‘Display the Records Window, instead of Focus Window, at Startup’.

If the problem is just that the wrong person is showing in the Focus Window, then as Neil has said you need to set the File Root.

FH always opens with the Root Person focused (and of course their spouse/children)

In my case, it is me!

I once asked if it was possible to open on the last person edited - this was how the previous program I used worked - and I was shown how to easily find the most recently edited people using the records window.

If the person you want as Focus isn't actually showing as the program opens, then navigate to that person and then right click on them and select 'Make File Root'

Each subsequent time you open FH then that person will show - it says 'Root Person' in their name box.

I presume this is what you mean and that FH is opening with someone other than the desired person?

Best Wishes,

Neil

Re: Set program to open on focus page

Hi Colin,

If the Records Window is being displayed initially instead of the Focus Window then check the following setting:

In Tools > Preferences > Startup untick Display the Records Window, instead of the Focus Window, at Startup.

If the wrong couple is being displayed, then bring your desired couple into focus, right-click on one of them and choose Make File Root.

In the File > Project Window is your preferred Project set as Default with a green tick?

If not then right-click its name and choose Set as Default Project.

I presume you used File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup to restore your Project backup ZIP file.

I humbly agree.

The only additional suggestion I'd add is to use the 64 bit version if your computer supports that option. I use the batch conversion feature to resize images for my web-site and had a heck of a time figuring out why sometimes it just wouldn't do what I wanted. Lo and behold, I found out it was running out of memory when trying to process larger image files. No problems at all with the 64 bit version.

You can rotate, change image sizes, and add text in tidy little boxes.  One of my greatest uses is to highlight on a census or BMD register page, the person(s) of interest.
I do that by inserting a little box in the right place and filling it with yellow (like a highlighter would).
On many such pages they're downloaded in mono, but with IrfanView you can `Increase Colour Depth' thereby using a full range of colours.
It's freeware, but I'd commend that, when you realise its value, a donation to the author is always a good thing to do.

Oops! Sorry, Brian.

My comments about the usefulness of the program stand, but I should have checked before posting the price!

It looks as though the offer expired on June 20th in the UK. It is now back to full price!

If I may suggest an additional piece of software: Affinity Photo. https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/

For many people, this may seem overkill, but until 30 June, Affinity is offering at half price. (It's their contribution to the COVID-19 issue.) AP allows you to do pretty much anything you like with an image. I use it to fix damage and dirt.

Photo is currently AUD49 I think - which means that in Euros, GBPs etc is considerably less than that.

As I say, maybe overkill for many, but you can't beat that price - over the next couple of days.

I've been experimenting with ORA for a short time.
I have found the Text Templates useful to gather text from Ancestry and FindMyPast pages and format it for directly pasting into Family Historian.
I have just started trying the Auto Auto Text Template feature to capture data directly into Ancestral Sources.
It seems to work very well for me and I think I will find it very helpful, particularly for entering sources in a consistent manner.
I believe the subscription model is to allow support for future changes to the websites covered.
No connection, just a customer.
