Family Historian on Linux

Jon

Hi
Just wanted to say what a great program! I have been using it for 2 years on and off, and in my opinion is by far the best. I have used Family Tree Maker and TNG software but I always return to this product.
My only gripe is that now I am on a Linux operating system I am unable to use this fantastic program, despite trying to make it work it in WINE. I abandoned Windows products over 6 months ago (I won't go into a protracted missive as to why, plenty of stuff out there to back up my reasons). It would be nice if perhaps in the future, someone (or the developer) may offer an option to make this work in the Linux operating system. Until then, I am using my backup web based Tribalpages option. IF there is a way now to make this superb program work within Linux, perhaps some kind folk can offer a solution. Many thanks.

Have you reviewed the Knowledge base article for Adoption

If you want to add both sets of Parents on to a diagram you can simply add a second diagram creating a chart.

How can both sets of parents be reflected on my family tree?

Thank you John and Mike for your help.  I’ve downloaded the plug in, I had been using File/Import Export/Gedcom file previously.  But it’s worked and the edited tree is now on Ancestry!

Julia

Hi Simon. Many thanks for setting this up. I have been using FH6 since soon after it first came out and can't tell you how much I love the program (I previously used GST and Broderbund). Keep up the good work! Stephen

Sorry, that penultimate paragraph should have said: “That is NOT recognised by most products, …”

Julia,

John’s advice is essentially correct.

The FHUG Knowledge Base has advice in Exporting a Family Tree with/without Media:

https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:exporting_gedcom_with_multimedia

Especially see under Export to Website Without Sensitive Data that focusses on Ancestry.

The FHUG Knowledge Base has advice on the Export Gedcom File Plugin:

https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=plugins:help:export_gedcom_file:export_gedcom_file

The Ancestry option is explained in:

https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=plugins:help:export_gedcom_file:anc_ancestry_family_tree

The reason you are getting the error is that FH uses the Unicode UTF16 character encoding internally.

That is recognised by most products, so needs to be the UTF8 character encoding.

That is an option in FH but there are also other GEDCOM adjustments that are needed for Ancestry.

Did you use the “Export Gedcom File” plug-in in the plug-in store?

hello
i’ve recently done a DNA test with Ancestry and want to export part of my family tree to Ancestry to try and find some cousins.  I’ve followed the FH instructions, made a copy, removed all sources and notes, leaving the very bare bones of the tree, but when I try to upload it I get a reply ‘not a valid GEDCOM file’.
can anyone please help me or let me know what I should be doing?
thanks in advance

regards
Julia

Welcome new users!

Welcome!

The purpose of this group is to provide an open forum for users of Family Historian to share tips and advice on using it, with other users.  Everyone should feel welcome to contribute, and to seek advice and give it.

Members can post messages to the group by sending an email to: family-historian@groups.io.  Or if you prefer, go to https://groups.io/g/family-historian in your web-browser and click ‘New Topic’ on the left.

Tip: Members receive each post as an email, by default.  If your email program allows it, you are recommended to accept an individual email for each message posted to the group (this is the default ‘Subscription’ setting), but create a folder within your email program to store the group emails you receive. You can create a (mail) Message Rule within most email programs, which ensures that all email messages received from the group are automatically moved to this folder. The emails you want to move are ones where the ‘To’ line contains family-historian@groups.io (i.e. ones that were originally sent to the group, and then forwarded to you). This has the advantage that group messages are kept conveniently grouped together, while still being easy to read.
