Re: Reinstall question
Joe, Sorry, but if you are going to question every single bit of advice, this is going to take a looooong time. Please read the Installation Advice in the Knowledge Base. Mike

Mike, I have one more question. I thought I’d have to install FH 5 and then do the upgrade to v6. If I understand the instructions correctly, I should just run the upgrade program alone and then put in both product keys. Is that latter understanding correct? Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe, There is advice on that topic in the FHUG Knowledge Base Family Historian Installation Advice: https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:reinstall_family_historian I suggest you join the FHUG https://www.fhug.org.uk/ that is free and has free resources, forums, downloads, etc.
FH V6.2.5 is NOT the latest version, so I strongly advise you update to the free FH V6.2.7 before anything else. Also make sure you have backups of your FH Projects and anything else on the PC that is valuable. Don’t forget to run the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings Plugin, otherwise you may lose all your customisations of Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Plugins, Fact Sets, Property Box tabs, Icons, etc, etc.
You only need your FH V6.0.0 Upgrade disk and the Licence Registration Keys for both V5 and V6 as explained in the Installation Advice above. Then you can update to the latest free FH V6.2.7 download.
BTW: Are you using the Windows 10 free update technique? Don’t buy a Windows 10 licence.

I am currently using Family Historian 6.2.5 on a Windows 7 PC. I need to do an install of Windows 10 that will eliminate my programs/apps. So, I will need to reinstall FH. I have my FH 5 disk and the FH 6.0.0 Upgrade disk. Will I be able to get set on on Windows 10 by using them sequentially and then doing the online upgrades? If not, what do I need to do? Joe

Re: Reinstall question
Hoe, This Email list is a replacement for the Rootsweb mail list, both run by Simon Orde of Calico Pie. Neither are anything to do with the FHUG website, so I advise you stick with the FHUG and ask your questions there.
The FH File > Backup/Restore commands only backup Projects and do NOT backup your customisations. So download the ‘Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings’ Plugin from the FH Plugin Store. It is best to update to FH V6.2.7 and run the Plugin before installing Windows 10. Then afterwards when you install FH and update to FH V6.2.7 the backups will be compatible.
Have you gone to the https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 website to Create Windows 10 installation media? That is the technique that reliably works for free.
But this discussion would be much easier in the FHUG Forums.

Thanks Mike, I do belong to the FHUG. That was how I landed here. I thought it switched over. I have a few questions. Is there any need for me to upgrade FH before switching to Windows 10? I don’t think I have a “Backup and Restore…” plug-in, bur anytime I make changes I use the regular [I thought built-in] “Backup and Restore…” selecting to Full Project option. Is that the same thing? As far as Windows 10 goes, I had a few failed upgrade attempts alone, a couple with a computer consultant/tech friend and one each with two Microsoft techs2 on the phone. One said I’d need to purchase a Product key for full use once upgraded [but never happened] while the other thought not. So, I think I’ve tried the technique to which you’re referring but I’m not sure. Joe

Well thank you everyone who contributed towards my question. I did not expect such a good response and some of the experiences and knowledge shared was excellent. I decided not to reply to everyone as I didn't know it comes around to the whole Group/Thread each time and is not a personal reply. It certainly helped answer my question and provided advice as to how to better handle this topic going forward.
Thank you all once again - what an excellent Forum

Re: Importance Value of various Birth Sources
George Davis
Interesting thread. My wife’s grandmother is challenging. Her date of birth inferred from various census years is as follows:
1900: Sep 1895 (month and year reported in this census) 1910: I am unable to find her 1920: 1892 1930: 1896 1940: 1899
1942 Application for social security number lists the dob as 10 October 1897, as well as place of birth, maiden name of mother, and name of father in addition to other information. She appears to have signed this document, although the signature for the first name and the middle and last names appear to have been signed by two different hands.
1983 SSDI lists date of birth as 28 August 1895. Social security number on the application for a social security number and the SSDI are identical so I am sure they are for the same individual. My wife’s family report that this is when they traditionally celebrated her birthday.
I have been using the 1942 application for a social security number as the preferred and hopefully most accurate because it is the one source where she likely reported the information. I believe that the data for the SSDI is from the certificate of death, reported by a survivor. Apparently the Social Security Administration does not verify the information reported at death.
I am now beginning to thank that the September 1895 reported by one of her parents in 1900 might be the best date.
Cheers,
George

Following on from David’s comments I would like to make an observation about marriage in the 1990’s when I married in a Methodist Church. The minister asked my husband and I to produce ID which was easy as we had passports. With regards to occupation he took our word for it and the same for name of father. My father had died but I wasn’t asked for proof of this. In my research I have several instances where either the bride or groom has invented a father, conveniently deceased, upon marriage to give a veneer of respectability and disguise the fact that they were illegitimate. That potential charge is where the "encouragement" comes from. There is at least one aspect where documentary proof is required though - IIRC a divorced person going for remarriage needs to provide proof of the divorce. Nonetheless I do have instances of certificates - early in the 20th century - where untruths over identity are told. Usually I find more baptisms giving untruths than birth certificates though the not-quite-exactly-true baptism in my mind at the moment is one in Manchester so local knowledge by the priest may have been lacking.

Re: Adjusting Records and Focus windows
Hi Sheena, There is a well documented process for migrating from PC to PC in the FHUG Knowledge Base Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide: https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:family_historian_migration_guide
That process ensures the whole Project migrates including all Media and that all custom settings migrate across too.
May I suggest you join the FHUG https://www.fhug.org.uk/ which is free and has many more resources, downloads, etc.
Regarding the vertical Navigation Bar on the left you have probably got one of the following set wrongly. In main menu bar View >Navigation Bar is switched off. In Tools > Preferences > Display tab Always Show Record Window Icon is not ticked.
Are you saying the Focus Window fills the FH window without a Property Box on the right. That is adjusted in Tools > Preferences > Workspaces for the Focus Window.
But as I said if you follow the Migration Guide it explains how to use a Plugin to copy across all those settings from your old PC. If you have customised Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Plugins, Fact Sets, etc, etc, then those need migrating across too.
