Re: Backup Problems

Kathleen Wilson

Hi Mike

I had repeated occasions when it would not backup without the error message coming up.

As far as I can see the files were not open, I cannot remember when I last opened them.  However following your first email I did open and close them both in Adobe Acrobat and also from the list in my documents.  It still would not run a backup without the error messages.  After having done one of the open and close exercises I rebooted my computer but it still would not run a normal backup.

It was only after I had deleted them from Adobe Acrobat and the list in my documents that a full backup was successful without any error messages.  I have since done three full backups and they have been successful.

I have One Drive on my computer but have never used it.

All seems well now and thanks for the help you have given me.

Kathleen

The problem is nothing to do with how long ago those two PDF files were created.

It is entirely to do with their current open/closed status during the Backup.

If another program application has them open while the Backup is running then that Backup cannot access them.

Presumably, you did not have them open in a PDF reader.

Another possibility is that a cloud store app such as OneDrive or Google Drive or some other auto-backup has temporarily locked those two PDF files open.

It is not clear if you only got those two error messages once or if you repeated the Backup and still got them.

If only once then I suspect trying the Backup again would have worked.

Thank you for your advice.  For some reason (can’t remember what) I had saved copies in my documents family information folder.  I have deleted both files from there and also the Public folder in Family Historian and everything backed up OK.  What i can’t understand is that All relatives diagram was created in 2014 and the Thomas Bean one in 2020 and I have backed up regularly since then without problem until recently.  However as backup seems to be working OK, as you say, I can recreate them easily.

Many Thanks

The V7 discrepancy is with the page https://pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk/plugins-for-v7. It shows 82, instead of 86. I concur that if you look at the sub-menu pages by type, they total 86, matching the All Plugins List page and my stats.

I have posted a Support Ticket.

As accurate as Google sheets queries and visual inspection of the number of rows and columns on each website page for each version. The latter are typically 4x4 but for V7 are 3x4 + 1x3. I'll do a one-by-one crosscheck this evening.

With your discrepancy of 4, I would have expected to spot at least one, but did not. So are your figures accurate?

The subject has Pro's and Con's for both sides if you Google it.

I have to admit, I do leave my laptop on as it takes so long to boot, getting a bit long in the tooth.

If you use Edge or Chrome and look at Task Manager, you will see there is at least one process for each Tab you have open, and that can reduce processing power etc. if you leave them constantly open and the machine on. Like other apps, it is also a program so susceptible to machine crashes too.

My own preference if leaving a device on would to leave no program open. In my case especially FH as my projects are cloud based so leaving FH open is inherently dangerous in this case!

As I support GP surgeries and many staff work remotely at the moment, with sometimes several user profiles existing, our advise is to reboot these devices several times a week to clear Caches, temp files, multiple processes etc. and certainly close programs before they log off.

Best Wishes

Neil.

I also thank you for that. I have just found it convenient to leave programs open if I expect to go back to them before I shut the computer down at the end of the day.
Would that also apply to the browser (Google)?

I leave mine on continuously with a reboot typically no more frequently than weekly. Browser remains open, often with 30+tabs, usually a few open on Google Docs, Sheets... My main family tree software often left open - it uses the SQLite database engine so it saves 'atomically'. That raised a question in my mind about fh7 - frequency with which changes are saved which I have not yet investigated but your remarks are a little alarming.

I don't even put mine to sleep especially since the pandemic got me doing video conferencing and virtual choirs - a bug in Windows 10, probably related to the age of my laptop, causes the OS to lose contact with the camera on hibernating and a reboot is necessary in order to use the camera again. I turn off the outboard monitor and dim the main screen in the hope that doing so will prolong their lives. Windows often does an update with a reboot overnight. I've not had any issue with files getting corrupted.

@admin, perhaps this belongs under a more appropriate topic...

Kathleen,

Those files are not Saved Charts.

They are PDF Diagram files you have saved in the Public folder.

Those two PDF files are open in a PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader.

One is a Descendants Diagram for Thomas Bean and the other an All Relatives Diagram for Kathleen Dawson.

If you find which application has those two PDF files open and close them then the Backups will complete OK.

However, since they are only saved Diagrams they can easily be recreated.

Dear List

At the moment I am running Family Historian 6.2.7, but hoping for Father Christmas to upgrade me to V7.

When doing a full backup I am getting two error messages as follows:

  1.  Unable to open file “C:\Users\CaptainK\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Dawson Family\Public\Descendants of Thomas Bean.pdf” for backup.  Skip this file to continue.

  1.  Unable to open file “C:\Users\CaptainK\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Dawson Family\Public\Relatives of Kathleen Dawson.pdf” for backup.  Skip this file to continue.

I have skipped the backing up of these files, but don’t want any bugs or anything in the system when I upgrade.  When going to View, Saved Charts, there are no saved charts with those titles.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Thanks. I will follow up via the Support Ticket.

I've since realised that FamilySearch does allow for a range of years so I've revised the template to include the upper year of the range.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&q.anyDate.from=<<<y1>>>&q.anyDate.to=<<<y2>>>&q.givenName=<<<givn>>>&q.surname=<<<last>>>
And I've learned that it is the inclusion of the corresponding variable in the template that activates a data entry field in Search Details.

The Web Search templates provided with FH are maintained by Calico Pie, so you should report any issues/suggest update by raising a support ticket: Family Historian Support Ticket System (calico-pie.com)

The Knowledge Base is maintained by members of FHUG. If you would like to write an article on Web Search templates, you can request an editor’s account: Request an Editor’s Account – Family Historian User Group (fhug.org.uk). Alternatively, suggest an article is needed in the relevant forum on FHUG (Maintaining the KnowledgeBase).
