Re: Export GEDCom question
Select the standard query called 'Descendants' then click the cog icon in the query toolbar and choose 'Save as Custom Query'. You can now edit this custom query. On the Rows tab click 'Inc spouses of relatives' in the bottom right corner.

Export GEDCom question
I want to export my Great x2 Grandfather and his descendants + spouses to GEDCom to send to a relative.
I can see how to select the individual and his descendants via query, but not how to include the spouses. I'm probably missing something obvious. Thanks for any advice Regards Neil -- Neil Grantham ------------------- Using FH 7 & AS 7 Researching Grantham, Skuce, Barrow, Birchall.

Re: adding ancestors from one project(file) to another
Victor Markham
Personally I would simply merge them both. Who knows some of the
names may be connected to both trees. There is nothing to lose by
doing so I have done myself and did find one or two names linked Victor

Re: adding ancestors from one project(file) to another
Hi Richard, I think you are asking how to merge part of your friend’s tree into your tree.
You first need to create a Project or a GEDCOM extracted from your friend’s tree that contains the direct line you want to transfer. Either:
OR
In both cases, there is a technique for selecting Individuals from a tree Diagram and using that list to choose what to transfer.; See FHUG Knowledge Base ‘Create an export GEDCOM based on a diagram’ https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/create-an-export-gedcom-based-on-a-diagram/ In your case, you might only select the direct line ancestor boxes in the Diagram. The resulting Name List can be applied to either the Split Tree Helper or Export > GEDCOM File method.
After creating the pruned Project/GEDCOM, use the File > Merge/Compare File command to import those records to your tree.
There is advice in the FHUG Knowledge Base on the Split Tree Helper, Export > GEDCOM File, and Merge/Compare File commands.

adding ancestors from one project(file) to another
Richard Clark
Hi...I have 2 projects, one my own tree and the other a tree for a dear friend. I have discovered that her greatx8 grandfather is a distant relative of my grandfathers 3rd wife. Without merging the 2 trees together, how can I merge my friends' direct line into my tree?

Bill, Did you see my reply on Tuesday, Sep 18th that linked to https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=19820 where there is Query to Calculate Birth date from date & age in any other facts. Mike Tate

Re: Unmarried Status

Why would you? Spouse really only indicates the parentage, which is correctly recorded. Marriage, in many records, requires a religious contract. “Common-law wife” was not uncommon! Until the registration by affirmation was legalised.

Re: Calculate Birth date from age at death

I agree. Deaths are recorded by someone who may not too closely related and, ladies in particular, might have taken a year or two off their age at marriage and subsequent ly. A relative of mine had two years of birth, I think to allow him to enlist a year early, and without a birth registration document very difficult to be sure.

Re: Calculate Birth date from age at death
I was interested to read this as "48 years 2 months 28 days" notations are common on USA registrations but not so much in UK. I am researching for a program to commit to and doing my research so shocked Family Historian does not have such a built in calculator, shocked as it appears to be one of the more professional packages and I have seen built in calculators in cheaper software which accept End Date as "48y, 2m, 28d" and calculate the start date and I have used this a lot.
I would say this is a common user need, especially for USA records, so is it on the development list for Family Historian or how do I find out. Software wise I just want to carefully choose a package that is speedy to use and help me rather than needing a lot of asides and time consuming workarounds. Thank you in advance

Re: Family HistorianV7 Hints

I think the different treatment of Newspaper Archives in FMP is due to how they arose.
FMP got a contract from the British Library to digitalise newspapers - and as with some other projects (e.g. early 1911 Census release) they put it on a separate site (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) with a separate subscription. Your FMP sub gives you an inferior access to the collection - hence the deluge of data. You can use advanced search on BNA and find articles of interest and then either pay a sub - or try and find the same articles via FMP! Ideally FH needs a BNA Hints facility (or FMP needs to properly merge the two sites as they did with the 1911 census - but perhaps with newspapers there is a distinct market for access and they want to maintain the premium service of BNA?) Thanks Mike that worked perfectly. Now if I could remember how I set them in the first place - oh well beyond your domain I think

In digesting your reply you have used very good logic in your thoughts in volume of possible items plus certain irrelevance as well. It would be unrealistic to think it would all be correct. What i envisaged was the end being what i wanted not thinking about the bits in the middle Thanks again Yours Colin McCullough NZ

Interesting in a couple of ways. Unless I'm missing something, there's nothing in the current FMP hinting mechanism to make it look for newspaper hints, and the scope of that hinting mechanism is entirely down to FMP. The interesting bits start when you realize that even the native FMP search mechanism splits newspapers off from the standard person search. This suggests that it's a very different beast. When you look at a typical FMP newspaper search, unless you use a really rare name, you get (or at least, I do) a deluge of data. That would suggest to me that newspaper hints in FH would be a similar deluge and you would be there forever trying to dismiss the hints. Also the only way to check the hints would be to get into the basic FMP GUI, which is what you were trying to avoid. So, because of the nature of the search, I suspect it's wholly impractical to produce newspaper hints in FH. Perhaps sadly. Adrian

I don’t know of an easy way to unset all those Fact Flags in bulk.

Thanks Mike. So simple. They are easy to set/unset one by one. It appears that I set them all. Is there a way to unset preferred for all?
