Yes, that is an alternative possibility.

Reinstalling Family Historian v7.0 will cure that problem too.

Re: Publish button

Hello Adrian,

It seems that something or someone has disrupted the crucial Windows folder where Report definitions are held:

C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Reports\

The simplest solution is to reinstall Family Historian v7.0 over the top of the existing version.

Can you offer any explanation of how that Report folder may have been upset?

Have you been doing any ‘file system housekeeping’? It sounds as if the content of C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Reports may have been deleted or moved.

Dear Members,

I have been using Family Historian version 6 from January 2016, and then version 7 from February 2021, and was very happy producing reports and charts without any problems until last week, when I was unable to access any reports from the “Publish” button on the application toolbar.

When I click on any report from the menu, I get a small square box on the screen which has inside it a yellow triangle and an exclamation mark, and the words “Report Not Found”. This applies to:

  • Individual Summary Report
  • Family Group Sheet
  • Media Report

When I click on the following I get a box next to the arrow showing  “<empty>”

  • Narrative Reports
  • Outline Reports
  • Record Detail Reports
  • Special Data Reports
  • All Miscellaneous Reports
  • Customs Reports

I have no problems with producing charts, just the reports.

Although I have been using FH for over 5 years, I am no expert, and this problems has really baffled me, as it happened out of the blue.

I shall be most grateful for any helpful instructions/advice from forum members as how best to rectify this problem, and get my Report Publishing facility back working again.

With thanks in advance

Re: As updating Fh

In addition to Neil’s suggestions, there is a Plugin you can run in FH that ensures AS is opened with your current Project.

See the Plugin Store entry for ‘Ancestral Sources Data Entry’.

Hi Kristeen,

For clarity, I believe by AS you refer to Ancestral Sources.

When you have AS open, on the top bar, does it have your Project named? IE mine says Ancestral Sources v7.2.4: Project: Grantham2012

I would imagine though, if you don't have a project selected, when you try to submit the data it would tell you there is no project selected.

To make sure, you can go to File>Open FH Project... and it then shows you the list of known projects

If you have both AS and FH open, when you update AS, FH will respond after a while (not instant), to tell you it has been updated, and you confirm to reload the project.

Likewise, if you change FH, AS will then ask you to reload.

I presume you are using FH later than v4? AS is not recommended for versions lower than this.

If this doesn't help, go to the specific AS help forum at Family Historian User Group (FHUG) here Ancestral Sources - Family Historian User Group (fhug.org.uk) where the author will respond and help you.

Best Wishes

Neil.

Subject: [family-historian] As updating Fh

I have been away from the tree for a while and upgraded AS TO VERSION 7. Enter details of the census in AS but after saving it doesn’t appear on FH.
I thought I’d selected method 2 and tried again and then selected method 1 ended up totally confused with nothing in FH and 3 entries against AS in Census history.
Can you please explain what I’ve done wrong and how I can get rid of the multiple entires and get FH to update with Census details
Thanks

Re: Multiple Marriages

It's very easy. Open the property box for the individual and add the first spouse in the spouse box. A tab appears with their give name on it and next to this you will see a little "+" tab appear. Click on this and you can add a new spouse and children. If you then need to re-order the marriages you can do so by clicking on the arrow to the right of the spouse box (which appears once multiple spouses have been entered).

You can also add a spouse or other individual by having the relevant spouse or parent etc open in the focus window or property box and click on "ADD" on the very top menu bar.

There is info in the HELP section on FH under the How To section. If you haven't been through the Onlune tour of FH or the getting started sections in help it's well worth doing.

Select the standard query called 'Descendants' then click the cog icon in the query toolbar and choose 'Save as Custom Query'. You can now edit this custom query. On the Rows tab click 'Inc spouses of relatives' in the bottom right corner.

Re: adding ancestors from one project(file) to another

Victor Markham

Personally I would simply merge them both. Who knows some of the names may be connected to both trees. There is nothing to lose by doing so

I have done myself and did find one or two names linked

Hi Richard,

I think you are asking how to merge part of your friend’s tree into your tree.

You first need to create a Project or a GEDCOM extracted from your friend’s tree that contains the direct line you want to transfer.

Either:

  1. Use File > Project  Window > More Tasks > Copy Project to make a copy of her project.
Then use File > Split Tree Helper on the copy to prune it down to the records you want to transfer.

OR

  1. Use File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File and <<Select the Individuals you want to transfer.

In both cases, there is a technique for selecting Individuals from a tree Diagram and using that list to choose what to transfer.;

See FHUG Knowledge Base ‘Create an export GEDCOM based on a diagram’

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/create-an-export-gedcom-based-on-a-diagram/

In your case, you might only select the direct line ancestor boxes in the Diagram.

The resulting Name List can be applied to either the Split Tree Helper or Export > GEDCOM File method.

After creating the pruned Project/GEDCOM, use the File > Merge/Compare File command to import those records to your tree.

There is advice in the FHUG Knowledge Base on the Split Tree Helper, Export > GEDCOM File, and Merge/Compare File commands.

adding ancestors from one project(file) to another

Hi...I have 2 projects, one my own tree and the other a tree for a dear friend. I have discovered that her greatx8 grandfather is a distant relative of my grandfathers 3rd wife. Without merging the 2 trees together, how can I merge my friends' direct line into my tree?

Bill,

Did you see my reply on Tuesday, Sep 18th that linked to https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=19820 where there is Query to Calculate Birth date from date & age in any other facts.

Re: Unmarried Status

rsamoir@blueyonder.co.uk

Why would you? Spouse really only indicates the parentage, which is correctly recorded. Marriage, in many records, requires a religious contract. “Common-law wife” was not uncommon!  Until the registration by affirmation was legalised.

Re: Calculate Birth date from age at death

rsamoir@blueyonder.co.uk

I agree. Deaths are recorded by someone who may not too closely related and, ladies in particular, might have taken a year or two off their age at marriage and subsequent ly. A relative of mine had two years of birth, I think to allow him to enlist a year early, and without a birth registration document very difficult to be sure.

Re: Calculate Birth date from age at death

Bill Heaney

I was interested to read this as "48 years 2 months 28 days" notations are common on USA registrations but not so much in UK. I am researching for a program to commit to and doing my research so shocked Family Historian does not have such a built in calculator, shocked as it appears to be one of the more professional packages and I have seen built in calculators in cheaper software which accept End Date as "48y, 2m, 28d" and calculate the start date and I have used this a lot.

I would say this is a common user need, especially for USA records, so is it on the development list for Family Historian or how do I find out.

Software wise I just want to carefully choose a package that is speedy to use and help me rather than needing a lot of asides and time consuming workarounds.

Thank you in advance
