Re: lost link

I have successfully restored the projects to the project window in both this PC and One drive as per your instructions.

And I have altered the position of the back up to where it was originally.

When you have a moment I would like to know the safest way of copying my projects to One Drive cloud storage

Many thanks

Michael

Thank you for that information which is much clearer.

Please try these two experiments to see if the FH File > Project Window lists your Projects and let me know how you get on.

1) This PC > Documents > Family Historian > Family Historian Projects

In the File > Project Window select More Tasks… > Project List > Choose Location for Projects…

Browse to This PC > Documents > Family Historian > Family Historian Projects and click OK.

Does that list your Projects such as ‘Michael & Barbara family’ and can you open them successfully?

2) One Drive > Documents > Family Historian Projects

In the File > Project Window select More Tasks… > Project List > Choose Location for Projects…

Browse to One Drive > Documents > Family Historian Projects and click OK.

Does that list your Projects such as ‘Michael & Barbara family’ and can you open them successfully?

If all else fails then File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup on ‘FH Project Backup - Michael & Barbara family - 2021-09-22 1606.zip’ may recover that project.

But please tell me before you start that process.

To choose where backups are saved use Tools > Preferences > Backup and Select the Default Backup Folder you prefer.

Sometimes when a new version of FH is installed it may upset some of your customised settings, which then need to be reinstated.

The ‘Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings’ plugin helps avoid such problems. Please ask how to use that if you are unsure.

There are safer ways of copying your projects to OneDrive if you wish to use its storage services to backup your projects.

When the main problem is resolved I explain those methods.

Hello Mike

In answer to your queries

I do mean family Historian project folders

Ther are no projects in the File.project window in either one drive or this PC

I do mean full back up when saying full save.

Regarding the backup copies prior to end July they were in my family historian project folder after that date they are in Documents under This PC as stand alone zip file FH Project Backup -Michael & Barbara family  -2021-09-22 1606 zip similarly when I have done a Gedcom Backup.

I have a Family Historian projects folder in One Drive > Documents and one in This PC > documents>family historian. They both are as far as I can see identical and contain my whole family historian project.

My path to FH in One drive is One Drive>documents>family historian Projects>Michael and Barbara family>Michael & Barbaras family.fh_proj

The path from This Pc is Documents>family Historian>family historian Projects>Michael& Barbara Family> Michael & Barbaras family.fh_proj

When opening family Historian there are no projects in the project window.

It appears to me that the only thing missing is the link to the shortcut and then putting in the path to back the project up to one drive.

I hope this makes the situation clearer

Many thanks

Michael

Michael, I am sorry you having problems.

If unsure about the FH folder structure it might have been best to stop and ask about the first problem rather than try and fix it which may have made matters worse.

To help us help you please be very specific when describing what you have done. Give precise folder and file names. State precisely what commands you use.

I’m not sure what you mean by the family historian file. Do you mean the Family Historian Projects folder?

Since a project consists of much more than a GEDCOM file, just copying one GEDCOM back won’t fix the problem.

Did that get any projects displayed in the File > Projects Window? I suspect not.

I’m not sure what you mean by a ‘full save’.

Assuming the backups you mention are FH Full Backups then they are not restored from a shortcut.

You must use the File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup command.

You say you know V7 has changed the backup, but I’m not aware of any such changes. What do you think they are?

Where did your FH Backups go before?

The FH file structure is not very complex.

See https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/understanding-projects/ under Project Structure.

However, before doing anything let us take stock of where you are.

Does the Documents folder in OneDrive contain a Family Historian Projects folder?

i.e. the one you copied there in the first place.

When you open FH does the File > Projects Window list any projects?

What are they?

I have windows 365 and version 7 of family historian.

I was trying to copy my family historian file to one drive by dragging from the folder in my documents and dropping into the documents folder in one drive

However I seem to move rather than copy and then when trying to open using the shortcut on my desktop all the projects have gone.

I have copied the gedcom back into a family historian folder created by myself in my documents I opened this and then did a full save.

I have all the back ups on my machine should I just do a restore from the shortcut.

I also see that my recent backups as from end July  have gone to my documents. I know that V7 has changed the backup but is this where they should be.

I have used FH for a number of years but have never done anything with the file structure and do not understand it. So please simple instructions.

Thanks

Michael

Thanks for raising this. I was having the same problem and couldn't for life of me figure how to solve it!

Re: Internet data matches - FMP login box inactive

For your information, FH v7.0 has replaced the internal IE11 browser with the Edge browser.

So you could return to the internal FH Web Search Window.

Thanks again.
I had been gaily ignored the banner because I knew I was running FMP under Edge. What I hadn't done was swap the "Location to display matches" option to External Web Browser! Doh!

FMP has been warning for some time that they were going to cease support for IE11, so I suspect they ceased it between then and now.

And bingo it seems to work (after restarting FH). Thank you!

I'm unclear however why that has become a problem in the last day or so, because it was certainly working last week!

Are you using the internal web-browser within FH6? If so, that is IE 11 and no longer works with FMP or many other sites, and you will have to modify your preferences to switch to using an external browser.

I'm using v 6.2.7 and Edge browser. and Windows is all patched up to date (last updated on Tues)

Data matches are working, but when I come to Review, I am unable to see the record and it expects me to log into FMP. This I can't do -  or even get my cursor into the "Email" box to enter my credentials. It's displaying the message across the top saying I'm using unsupported IE 11, when I'm definitely using Edge. I can't click on the X to close that message box either
I have no problem with using FMP independently

Any thought on how can I fix it?

Re: Fact Type corrections

Mike Tate

Again, the Search and Replace plugin only operates on database items, not customization details such as Fact Set definitions.

The only case where Sentence templates could be affected by that plugin is if the Facts tab has a specific local Sentence template instead of using the global Tools > Fact Types… definitions. However, it is only worth using the plugin if there is a significant quantity of such cases.

So, either manually edit each specific local Sentence box template where that problem arises, or in Tools > Fact Types… edit each Fact definition where the Sentence Template suffers the problem. You will probably need to review each Sentence Template imported from TMG anyway because it is not a perfect process. However, you are planning to delete many of those imported TMG (project) Fact Set definitions, so that might cure some <CR> <br> problems anyway.

If you still need advice about using Search and Replace to correct specific local Sentence templates then please ask again.

Thanks – my aged brain again!!

Yes using 7.0.8 and 3.4

Makes sense and will go sort out the way you describe.

just discovered another which I seem to remember being discussed before but can’t find it

Relates to a a sentence in TMG that starts with a <CR> code and gets converted to $!?&<br> by FH

I would have thought that the search/replace plugin might be able to sort it out but can’t get my head around it or can you point me in the direction of a fix

Hi John,

Please confirm you are using FH v7.0.8 and Change Any Fact Tag plugin v3.4.

I think you misunderstand the purpose of the Change Any Fact Tag plugin.

It is intended to change the GEDCOM Tag of actual Facts in your database.

It has nothing to do with changing the Tools > Fact Types… definitions that specify how those database Facts are displayed.

The TMG (project) Fact Set imports the TMG Master Tag Type List definitions and they override the Standard Fact Set.

So if you want the imported Birth events to use the Standard Fact Set definition you simply delete the TMG (project) definition for Birth.

i.e.

Use Tools > Fact Types… and at the top select Fact Set: TMG (project) which is crucial.

Select the Birth event, and hold down the Ctrl key to also select other events, then click the Delete key and acknowledge the warning.

Now there is no TMG (project) Fact definition for those deleted definitions, so the actual Facts will use the Standard Fact Set just like your other Projects.

BTW: You may have identified a flaw in the Change Any Fact Tag plugin regarding the Source Tag Set: TMG (project) that I shall investigate.

However, it does not prevent it from changing any database Fact Tags as there is a simple workaround.

FYI: I am currently in discussion with CP regarding Fact import problems for TMG that they have not perfected in my opinion.

Fact Type corrections

John Hanson

I have imported a database from TMG into FH7 and now have an issue in trying to amend some of the fact types

The import creates a sets if facts in a fact set called “TMG Project” and using “Fact types” within the Tools menu item shows a long list of facts including birth, baptism, etc

Now I am happy to change these to the standard fact with those name so should be able to use the Plugin “Change any fact tag”

However when I select the “Source Tag set” as TMG Project it does not show these

This is not the first TMG project that I have imported and use the previous one (much smaller) as a test bed to make sure all would work OK

How can I get round the issue?

Very occupied for the next few weeks so the old report will have to wait.

It seems that I have a lot to learn about the latest FH version and perhaps what I want is already there. Thanks for remembering.

Just to be clear, in FH terms, these are Diagram charts and not Reports (which are just textual).

It is not possible to get FH to produce such Diagrams with common ancestors merged into one.

In the general case, there may be multiple common ancestors where that would not be possible.

The coloured ribbons can be suppressed, but that is all.

It might be possible to manually adjust the boxes on an FH Diagram to merge the common ancestor, but won’t be easy.

(Michael, I remember your question about Narrative Reports but you have not produced the old report from FH3 that you promised.)

Re: Translating charts

Mike Tate

I am learning about Language Packs as fast as you.

Changing the Date Format works in the default English version of Text Schemes but has no effect (except for Year) when a different Output Language is chosen.

The explanation is that the Date formatting is performed by the Language Pack Plugin and the default plugin ignores the Date Format qualifiers.

I will ask CP if that can be improved.

It is also the Language Pack Plugin that determines the translation of words such as ‘between’, ‘and’, ‘from’ & ‘to’ in Dates.

Use Tools > Language Packs… select Slovenian and click Plugin… to edit the plugin script where every << TODO marker appears.

e.g.

sHusband = '(no name)';            -- << TODO       Replace (no name) with the Slovenian equivalent words.

sText = "between " .. GetDatePtText(date:GetDatePt1(), "", "") .. " and " .. GetDatePtText(date:GetDatePt2(), "", "");            -- << TODO       Replace "between " and " and " with the Slovenian equivalent words.

You can also force the dd.mm.yyyy format in this plugin.

Near line number 630 you will find: function GetDatePtText(datept, sPrefix1, sPrefix2)

That needs these subsequent two lines to be replaced at about line numbers 642 and 646:

sDay = iDay .. ' ';                                   becomes          sDay = iDay .. '.';

sMonth = g_months[iMonth] .. ' ';            becomes          sMonth = iMonth .. '.';

Be very careful not to change the layout of the script, especially the symbols, otherwise it won’t work.

As the Help advises, save a plain text copy of the plugin script file as a backup just in case.

Re: Translating charts

Thanks for the instructions. Worked great. I've managed to use the same analogy for marriage and death.
I still have issues with the date format. For some reason the format remains unchanged irregardless what I pick. It is always in the format "on 26 August 1733" for instance, except if I use format "year", which then displays "1733".
Where/how can I translate words "between" and "and" in case birth date is displayed as "between 1748 and 1750"?
