editing a decendants report

Nev Ramsden

Hi,

If I save a Descendants Report and then reopen it in Microsoft Word to allow me to make some additions – then when I try to re-save the modified report I am given the following message
“you are attempting to save a file type (rtf) that has been blocked by your File Block Settings in the Trust Center”
Why does this happen?
How do I stop it, so that I can make my additions?

Re: Additional info on shared people

Yes, use the {date} {place} {age} codes as usual to get details of the witnessed fact.

Additional info on shared people

Edward Sneithe

For a shared fact I include the following from the principals fact sentence to get basic information on the people sharing this fact. Is it possible to get additional information about the shared person from this point? I include the following in my sentence for the principal owner of the fact and this works fine:

<<br>       • Son: {role(single)=son}><<br>       • Sons: {role(plural)=son}>

In the FH GEDCOM file the share looks like this if the share points to a person in the file:

2 _SHAR @I2@
3 ROLE father
3 _SENT {individual} was father of {principal} < in the [date:YEAR] census>

and this if you just enter name for the shared person.

2 _SHAN Benny Goodman
3 ROLE administrator

In the first case FH must go to the specified individual to get the name. Does this make it at all possible to get additional information on the shared person like place, age, etc.?

Re: Number of people in file

Don’t worry Ron, that confusion with largest Record Id versus the total number of records is a recurrent topic. You are not alone.

That is one reason why there is an FHUG KB topic on the subject.

Hi Mike.
Thank you for that, you are, as usual, quite correct. You never stop learning with FH, must be my age. Thanks again

My guess would be that if youre looking into a family that has some potential repeated ancestors, FH perhaps notes it as separate individuals based on the number of spots of who appear in the tree and doesnt exclude the number of times it is repeated?

Just a guess.

Re: Number of people in file

Are you misreading what FH is telling you?

On the bottom right-hand margin of the main window, FH reports the number of Individual records and Family records.

Also, the File > File Statistics… command reports the number of every type of record.

I suspect you are looking at the largest Record Id in the Records Window, but those Record Id may have gaps in the sequence.

See FHUG Knowledge Base https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/record-identifiers/.

Re: Backup not working correctly

Thanks for replying.  I am using the current up to date version, and it seems to working OK now!  I have saved a full project to a separate hard drive and also to my computer and fingers crossed it looks alright.  Anything else happens, I'll let you know!  Thanks

Re: Backup not working correctly

Mark,

Can you please confirm some further details? Please answer as many of these questions as possible.

What FH Version are you using? (There are some know backup issues with earlier versions.)

Exactly what backup command are you using?

What is the backup filepath where the backup is being saved and what type of device is that?

How large is the backup ZIP file that gets produced?

Exactly what is the error message?

Is it “Stopped Working” or is it “Not Responding” and where does it appear?

Has this backup worked OK previously on either the old PC or the new PC?

How did you migrate your data from the old PC to the new PC?

The more background you can provide the quicker this problem can be resolved.

Does it say that FH has stopped working or that FH "is not responding" if it is the latter wait for a while.and it should complete. I have had that too and for some reason it takes longer that one expects

Re: Formatting Narrative report

Mike Tate

You are correct, <br> or <para> are not allowed in the Note field (or any other field) as they are exclusively Sentence Template codes.

It is not too difficult to test for the existence of %CUR_PRIN.RealestateSell[1]% or %CUR_PRIN.RealestateSell[2]%, etc.

The difficulty is determining whether the Sentence Template is running in %CUR_PRIN.RealestateBuy[1]% or %CUR_PRIN.RealestateBuy[2]%, etc.

Then it needs to ensure the index number [1] or [2], etc, is the same for both RealestateBuy and RealestateSell.

Presumably, the facts have unique Dates, so I wonder if something like this works as an evolution of your Birth/Baptism strategy:

=TextIf( %FACT.DATE% == %CUR_PRIN.RealestateBuy[1].DATE% and Exists(%CUR_PRIN.RealestateSell[1]%), … , %FACT.DATE% == %CUR_PRIN.RealestateBuy[2].DATE% and Exists(%CUR_PRIN.RealestateSell[2]%), … , …

i.e. If the current Fact Date equals RealestateBuy 1st instance Date then this must be the RealestateBuy 1st instance and needs to check for 1st RealestateSell.

Otherwise, a similar check is needed for the 2nd instance, then the 3rd instance, and so on…

Re: Formatting Narrative report

Edward Sneithe

Mike,

Thanks for the response. I will look at my data and see if there are any patterns to what I want. You present several interesting ideas which may be made to work for my particular preferences. As I look at this is there a way to see if a preceding or subsequent fact is one I want to combine with? Like in a real estate fact test to see if a preceding fact is another real estate transaction or could I see if any preceding or subsequent fact corresponds to this one. If I can somehow determine that then I could apply the same process I used on the birth and baptism facts.

I have many real estate transactions and they would combine nicely if I can determine from a sentence which ones to combine. I have successfully combined birth and baptism facts and death and burial facts allowing for each one to be present alone or in combination.

Currently I seem to be able to separate facts by putting a carriage return in the note field of the preceding fact which works but is not very elegant or particularly friendly. 7.0.8.2 does bot allow for <br> or <para> in the note field.

This may be an issue where there is no solution. FH does a great job but cannot possibly know how I want to construct a report.

Example:

Birth
RealestateBuy (1)
Education
Census
RealestateBuy (2)
Census
Marriage
RealestateSell (1)
Divorce
census
RealestateSell (2)

In this scenario can I determine  in RealestateBuy (1) that there is a RealestateSell (1) and combine those two sentences. I thought about combining the data for RealestateBuy and RealestateSell into one fact but that kind of messes up my timeline of events. This is the fun and challenging part of genealogy.

Thanks for coming back so quickly. I am trying to assemble a monograph about my uncle/godfather just now – it’s a nightmare as there are so many sources hence it’s taking priority.

I should have an old report from FH3 and should be able to copy and send it to you so you can see what I mean. Coming shortly with luck.

Welcome Michael.

I’m not sure what you mean by traditional ‘dropdown’ appearance, but try any of the reports on the ‘Publish’ menu.

e.g. Individual Summary Report, Family Group Sheet, Outline Reports.

What you are seeing in Narrative Reports and any other Reports is just the default styles.

FH has many customisation options. See the FHUG Knowledge Base on Reports and Books:

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/topic/reports-and-books/

Some users write Notes in their own words and adapt the Narrative Report to simply combine those Notes into a biography.

I am happy to wait some weeks as I have plenty of time as always when researching in geneology.
I have not tried doing a plugin so I would need to do some reading and testing before I try so it will take moree than a few weeks for me.

Re: Mapping errors / place name editing with search and replace plugin

Thanks Christer. Your outlined path seems sensible.

For information of those of us with only British experience, my
impression is that "Farm" in Scandinavian family history means rather
more than "farm" does in English family history (say). (And anyone who
can correct me is very welcome to!)

I've only had one Scandinavian family to deal with - and since they
were just in-laws of distant cousins I've not done more than 1
generation of them, and they were, in any case, urban Danes. However,
I have seen and *tried* to understand discussions elsewhere about
Scandinavian Farms. One reason for their importance is that they were
one of the contributors to the eventual fixed Scandinavian family
names. Also, they seem to have been much more fixed and controlled
than English farm names, which may easily change over the years. FYI
http://www.borgos.nndata.no/farms.htm mentions some of the processes
such as land registers that documented farms and their names.

All this being so, I can see why Scandinavian family historians want
to record Farm names as part of the Place data in FH.

If there is an equivalent in British practice, it might be the Scots
ferm-toun, which appears to end up on Ordnance Survey maps as
place-names. Though I'm unclear about exactly how ferm-touns operated!

Adrian

Re: Mapping errors / place name editing with search and replace plugin

Mike Tate

Thank you, that is much clearer.

It seems you have chosen to include Address details (farms, villages, parishes) in the Place field, many of which are old Scandinavian names.

That explains why geocoding is failing and why you have so many Place records to adjust, with several groups needing the same name changes.

I now understand your problem, but the solution is not simple.

Currently, the Search and Replace plugin cannot operate on just the Standardized field. Sorry!

It operates on both Place and Standardized together, or on just the Place name field.

So as well as a plugin to copy selected Place names to Standardized, the Search and Replace plugin needs updating to operate on just Standardized.

It may be a few days or weeks before I can find time to work on those plugins.

So if you are happy to wait, then that is your solution.

Alternatively, you could try to write your own plugin to copy selected record Place names to Standardized and publish it for others to use.

Re: Mapping errors / place name editing with search and replace plugin

christer@...

Problem I have is a large number of farms and villages in parishes with different names throughout history. There have also been changes in names of parish and when I geocode them about 50% are not geocoded and about 50 of the geocoded places get wrong lat/long.
As I am research is a lot in Finland where you have different spelling in Swedish and Finnish and locations have belonged to 3 different countries
(Sweden/Russia/Finland) there is a lot of problems with spellng of places (and person names).
So I want to add a standard name that can be geocoded for groups of locations while retaining the original place name.
At base level I want to copy all information in place names field to standardized name field in bulk and then do search and replace (using the existing plugin) on standardized place name and replace with the modern place name and get it geocoded.
A more advanced solution would be to search and select a group of place name records and add a standardized name for those records. Then I can see which place names records I have worked with and created a standardized plane name for..
Hope I made myself clear.
