Printing family tree

Pauline Smailes

Can someone tell me how to print out a family tree not in the boxes so I can get more on the page please? I was trying to print out the family from the late 1880’s and it said it would be over 200 pages ! It only started on half a page in the beginning so I would prefer it as a list rather than the boxes. Any help I would be so grateful Thank you .

Hi,

Apologies. Yes I meant to say 'were an unmarried couple'. Well spotted!

I have unticked the Auto-generate as suggested and that looks fine now. I am going to save it as doc file so I suppose I could make any alterations to the text then.

Ian/Mike, many thanks.... and I'm very impressed with speed of your responces.

Although I was somewhat sceptical (as I have been the Root Person for years and whenever I've used "Go to File Root" it always went to my record) I tried your solution first Mike.  I was not expecting success but, I'm sure you're ahead of me here, it worked for both the standard "Relationship to Root" column and the new "Relationship" solution column as set out earlier in this topic. Lesson for me? Never discount the obvious, always double check. Doh!

As Mike's solution resolved my issue I had no need to persue your suggestion Ian...but, again, thanks for responding.

It sounds like you have no File Root person defined.

In the Focus Window, select the person who should be File Root, right-click their box and choose Make File Root.

This is the expresssion I have had for that column through several upgrades & updates & it is working fine:

=Relationship(FileRoot())

I have v7.0.5 and migrated from V6 some time ago. I have the Relationship to Root column in the Records Window which previously showed relationships but now the column is totally blank: it would seem that I have no relations! 🤔

I tried removing the column and then replacing it but still nothing showed up. I then tried the fix (enter Relationship To Root in the Header box, and enter =Relationship(FileRoot(),,TEXT,1) in the Expression box. Add.) but all this did was enter another blank column.

Can anyone help resolve this?

Many thanks

Re: Unmarried couple sentence template

Don,

When you said the report reads 'were a married couple' did you mean it says 'were an unmarried couple'?  That's what it should say if you have set the Status to 'Never Married'.   I assume, because they are still living, that what you want to change is just the tense, from 'were' to 'is'.  Unfortunately I don't think this can be done.   However it is possible to suppress the sentence completely in some types of report by unticking the report option to 'Auto-generate sentences if Missing Facts'.  However this might not be ideal because it might suppress similar sentences elsewhere which you want to kepp. As explained in the Help files:

"If this option is ticked a sentence will automatically be generated for a couple if there would otherwise be no other sentence connecting them. The sentence generated will depend on the value of the Status field for their marriage. If the status is "Unmarried Couple", the sentence will say that at some point they were an unmarried couple. If the status is "Unknown" or"Never Married", the sentence will say that at some point, they had a relationship. Otherwise it will say that at some point they married.
This setting will also have the effect that a sentence is generated for anyone about whom no facts are recorded. The sentence will say that the person has few details recorded about him or her."

Hi Don,

You cannot control that wording directly.

In the Property Box of either person set the Status at the bottom of the Spouse tab to Unmarried Couple (or Never Married).

Then the report will not say they are married.

Re: Importing a created tree into another created tree

If I have understood correctly, you want to integrate your two Projects into one Project.

Then all the people in your GM Project would be included in your GF Project (and you could delete your GM Project).

Presumably, some people currently appear as ancestors of your Grandmother in both Projects, i.e. her father’s family line.

Are the facts and other details recorded against those ancestors identical in both Projects?

You cannot just click on your Grandmother and include a GEDCOM like that.

However, the File > Merge/Compare File… command does integrate a GEDCOM file into a Project.

It does so by comparing records in the Project with records in the GEDCOM to find matches.

Bear in mind that it does not just cope with Individual records but also Family, Note, Source, Media, Place, etc, records.

The FHUG Knowledge Base has advice on using the Merge/Compare File command:

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/merge-compare-file/

When you have studied that advice and have answers to my questions above I’m sure you will reply with your own questions.

I have 4 Projects I call family trees 2 are my Grandparents.

1 of the projects is my GF and my Grandmother's father's family line appears in the same tree but not her mother's family line.
1 of the projects is my GM family line which is the surname JONES from Wales.

Is it possible to add my GM project into my GF project  perhaps i.e. by creating my GM project into a gedcom and importing it into my GM line by just clicking her name and adding - like you would add a second spouse?

Hope this clears up my explanation.

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

It is not clear to me what you want to achieve.

You refer to 4 family trees and I suspect you are talking about 4 FH Projects that you open via the File > Project Window…

Is the file root person of each of those 4 Projects your 4 grandparents?

However, I’m not sure what you want to add in to your grandmother’s Project.

Where is that family tree created separately?

Sorry, but I don’t understand what you are trying to import after clicking her name.

Maybe I have completely misunderstood and you are talking about 4 family tree Diagrams you have saved as FH Charts.

Please can you explain what you want to achieve another way.

Mike

Hi

I started out with FH6 and have always kept up to date with the updates I am currently on Version 7.0.5

I have 4 family trees that I work on and would like to know if it's possible to add in to my Grandmother's family tree that I created separately. I would just like to click on her name and import her family tree and all her family appear lol.

Is it possible to do that and if so may I ask how please?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sarah

Re: Buying FH Version 6

Lorna Craig

Brian, as Mike has said there have already been several minor updates to fix bugs.  So if you do upgrade you will certainly not be ‘the first’ with the software.

The main consideration is whether you (or your friend) are likely to want to use many of the new features, and whether you want to spend time learning them.  However if your friend has to buy V7 you will need to learn about it anyway, in order to help him.

It is a major upgrade, but many long-term users of FH have decided to ignore some of the new features (particularly templated sources and Data Entry Assistants) and by customising some of the displays they find they can continue to work in much the same way as they did with V6.   There is some information about that in the FHUG Knowledge Base here: https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/customising-v7-to-use-v6-style-sources/

Re: Buying FH Version 6

Mike Tate

Brian, I sympathise with that approach and usually adopt the same strategy but forced to upgrade to FH v7 to support my plugins.

However, I have only recently taken the plunge to update my master Project to FH v7 format (I have FH v6 still running on another PC).

You may be approaching the point of satisfying your 2nd or 3rd bug-fix criteria.

FH v7.0.1 was released in January, followed by v7.0.2, v7.0.3, v7.0.4 and now v7.0.5.

Re: Buying FH Version 6

Brian Horridge

Mike

Thanks for the information.  My reluctance to upgrade to Ver 7 is primarily because I never like to be the first with any software and, no matter how much beta-testing is done, there are always bugs that appear as soon as it is used for real.  I normally wait till after the 2nd or 3rd bug-fix update.

Again, thanks

Brian

Brian,

FH v7 does have an option in its Export > GEDCOM File… command to choose Destination: Family Historian 6 or earlier.

That allows the GEDCOM file to be understood by FH v6 although there are some residual FH v7 ‘features’.

The Export Gedcom File plugin has a GEDCOM Export Mode: (FH6) Family Historian V6.2 that does a more complete conversion.

You may also have some issues exchanging certain customisation files whose format has changed slightly.

I suspect, sooner or later, you will upgrade to FH v7 but perhaps avoid some of its new features.

However, there are some features that I’m sure you will embrace.

If your friend bought FH v6 now, when you upgraded, your friend would have to fork out for the FH v7 upgrade too.
