Re: TMG Import and Log File Question

Ah! That is a new TMG Log File that I've not seen before and as you say cannot be left open while you review its contents via other FH commands.
The best I can suggest is that you expand the Log File window as much as possible and take a screenshot with Snip & Sketch one page at a time.
It seems that this an area that could be improved with a Save or Print option or making ot a non-modal floating window.
Unless anyone else has any ideas?

Mike

Thank you for the tip about not needing earlier installation codes.

No I didn't do separate back-ups of customisation settings, but I found that all my recovered FH files worked as before.  However, I haven't used plug-ins nor Queries.

When I reinstall my files after loss of Windows or transferring to a new Computer I don't use the back-up files I have created.  Instead, I transfer my Family Historian Projects Folder from my back up hard drive, which includes all my media files within the project folders.  That method has always worked and I have stuck with it.

I haven't noticed that I am missing anything.  I use semi-circular diagrams, and they are preserved.

I must go to the links you recommend to see what I am missing.

e.g. Use the ‘Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings’ plugin.

Thank you, Mike, that worked great. I didn't guess that I had to download from archives. I thought that would just be for old versions.

Re: TMG Import and Log File Question

Mike,

The file has an “ftf” extension, so it defaults to opening with FH.  Nevertheless, unfortunately, when I try to view the file through notepad, or any other editor, it’s difficult to read the file.  I’ve pasted a view of the lines below.

---------------------------------------------

Import from TMG, April 10, 2021

<fs="+4">TMG 'Local Sentences' converted to FH 'Sentence Overrides'</fs>

<i>See also "Fact/Witness Sentences" (accessible from the 'Work with Data' submenu of the Tools menu).</i>

<table="1295|1235|1415|1355|1850|7355|8930">

<row> <b>Record | Rec. Type | Fact | Fact Type | Role | TMG Local Sentence | FH Sentence Override</b> </row>

<row> I82 | Individual | Emigration | Event | Principal 2 | [P] \<\|and [PO]\> emigrated \<along with [WO] \>\<[D]\> \<from [L]\>.  [PF] [M1]. | {individual} \<and {%CUR_PRIN2%}\> emigrated \<along with [WO] \> {date} \<from {place}\>.  {%CUR_PRIN.NAME:FIRST%} {=Section(%FACT.NOTE2%,1,"\|\|")}. </row>

<row> I82 | Individual | Milit-Enl | Event | Principal 2 | [P] enlisted in the military [M] \<[D]\> \<[L]\> | {individual} enlisted in the military {note} {date} {place} </row>

<row> I720 | Individual | Note | Event | Principal 2 | [D] [P] \<\|and [PO]\> [M]  \<[L]\> | {date} {individual} \<and {%CUR_PRIN2%}\> {note}  {place} </row>

<row> I720 | Individual | Note | Event | Witness | [D], [P1] [M] | {date}, {%CUR_PRIN%} {note} </row>

<row> I720 | Individual | Note | Event | Witness | [D], [P1] [M] | {date}, {%CUR_PRIN%} {note} </row>

---------------------------------------------

There are formatting commands in the file, which make it hard to read outside of FH.

Yes, I ‘ve seen the Knowledge Base article,  I have not worked through it yet, as reviewing the log was the first thing I was trying to do.  It’s also hard to know which of the items in the article are still applicable with the newer version of FH.

Thanks

Tami Bunkers-Dolan

If your latest FH version is V5 or V6 or V7 you don’t need to install the earlier versions at all, so throw those old ones away.

All you need is the installation file plus the latest and previous licence keys or with V7 just the current activation code.

Re: how to reinstall family historian after a computer crash

Hi

I had a problem with Windows recently and had to reinstall from scratch.  I started with FH4 and bought the upgrades as they came out.  I re-installed FH4 and then all the upgrades in turn.  Fortunately I have all the licence keys.  It was easier than installing some of my other software.

I am glad I keep everything backed up on an external hard drive, including email.

I have all my data but need to reinstall FH and I can't find the installer in downloads.

I had FH6 followed by a free upgrade to FH7. I have both the license keys.

I cant see how to download the installers with out paying for them except by downloading the 30 day free trial version.

Should I install the trial version and use the V7 upgrade key.

I couldn't see a way of emailing FH support about this.

John, short answer: No. We are dependent on somebody familiar with the process for V7 to update the article, or at least provide the relevant information.

Whilst the KB article is helpful and says that it works with FH7 – and it does

The import guide section still says v6.2.7 – Has that text been updated with all the changes that were made for FH7?

Tami,

If you open the log file via Windows > Log Files then it is displayed in a separate Windows ‘Notepad’ application window.

That is completely independent of the FH windows.

If you wish you can use the Notepad window File > Save As… or File > Print… commands but should not be necessary.

BTW: Did you see the FHUG Knowledge Base advice on direct import from TMG?

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/importing-to-family-historian/

TMG Import and Log File Question

tami@...

I’ve done a direct import from TMG, and as expected it created a log file with conversion information.  I know how to view the log file from within FH, but I cannot figure out a way to print it or save it.  I want to do that so I can keep it open while checking out the data in FH.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tami Bunkers-Dolan

Re: Display in Property Box

Kathleen,

You can't actually get it in the focus window.  What I show in my screen shot is having the property box docked next to the focus window.  In the property box is undocked, in the upper right hand corner you will see an icon like this:

If you click on it, the property box will dock next to the focus window and the icon will change to look like this:

Re: Display in Property Box

Kathleen,

I have a 23" monitor, but you should be able to do it on a smaller screen as well.

Those other two windows are not docked.  They are floating so you can position them where you want them.  This is what I did.

After you dock the property box on the right then resize the combined focus window and property box to make them take up just the left two thirds of your screen.
Then go to Tools > Preferences > Property Box and set "Preferred Position for Citation List Pane" to "Open in New Window".. Then display the Sources For box by clicking on the yellow scroll icon at the top right of the Property Box.  This will open the Sources For box.  Position the window to the right of the property box and then shorten it so it is only 1/2 it's original height. Then select a citation in the Citation List Pane and click on the icon that looks like a scroll with a pen at the bottom of the pane.  This will make the Citation List Pane open in a window.  Resize it the way you want it and move it under the Sources For pane.

Just as an aside, it is much easier to discuss this kind of thing on the FHUG (Family Historian User Group) web site at https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/.  Many more people use it than this groups.io site.  Also you can post screen shots and they display right away rather than having to wait for them to be moderated.

Re: Display in Property Box

Kathleen Cooper

Sorry, sent a previous reply that didn't make sense. I get that the Property Box needs to be docked and the Focus Window needs to be skinny to accommodate that on the right hand side. But how are the Source Box and Citation Box added to the right of those?

Are you using a wide screen, whereas I am on a 19-inch laptop? Could that be the problem? I don't see a way to dock those two to the right-hand side.

Kathleen,

I replied with a couple screen shots which will cause that reply to be delayed until it is approved by the moderators.

I forgot to say also that I changed some settings in preferences also.  See my earlier to Chester,.  In particular to cause the property box to always be docked next to the focus window do the following:

Go to Tools > Preferences >  Workspaces and set "Preferred Position for Property Box" to "Docked".

I had a reply from Calico Pie, “You actually only needed to restart Family Historian. The problem is after an upgrade FH is running in Admin mode and windows prevents dragging and dropping in to an admin level program from a normal level program.”
