Re: Close Down/Startup Query

There is no automatic method of doing that. But there is an easy method.

Records window > click the Updated column header to display the most recent people you were working at the top of the list. You may need to right click on Updated and click Sort Descending.

Close Down/Startup Query

Hello,
I would like FH to start up showing the same person I was looking at when I last closed it, instead of always reverting to Person 1.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks for your help,
Patrick

I started by losing the Sources Box at the bottom of the Property Box. In trying to get this back, I managed to get rid of the rest of the Property Box as well. I just cannot see how to get both back.

I am sure I have done this before and managed to retrieve everything but I do not think I am functioning properly at present.

Many thanks.

Re: split project

I don’t really understand the question and you don’t explain why you need to split a Project.

Usually, it is not advisable to split a Project permanently, so no cross-reference is required.

You don’t say what split data items you want to put the MARKER or FLAG in.

Anyway, when a Project is split, the data is permanently deleted so there is nothing left to add a flag to.

Maybe you misunderstand how the Split Tree Helper operates.

I look forward to a more detailed explanation of your objectives and the process you were planning to use.

Is there a way to put a MARKER or FLAG in when you split a project so you have a reference which file contains the split data??

Re: split project

Possible steps you could take:
1.    Create a new Flag, call it say Split
2.    Backup your project/gedcom - for reference I'll call it Master
3.    Go through the project and mark/tick all those who you want to split from Master with the new Split flag ticked.
4.    Create a new custom query that show all individuals that have Split ticked - call it say Marked
5.    Create another query that shows all individuals that do NOT have Split ticked - call it say UnMarked
6.    Those two queries should show which Individuals you have or have not marked and the number of rows for each should add up to your original Indi count
7.    Backup your Master gedcom again.
8.    Goto 'master'.fhdata and make a copy of the Master gedcom - Ctrl-C
9.    Paste the copy Ctrl-V and rename the gedcom Copy as say MarkedMaster.ged
10.    Paste again and rename the Copy as say UnMarkedMaster.ged
11.    Effectively at this stage you will have 3 gedcoms : Master, Marked and UnMarked or whatever you decided to call them.
12.    Load MarkedMaster.ged and run split tree helper and select the third option, Delete all records  Not Found by the query below, then select your Marked query from the dropdown.  Pick any other options you need, and click Delete
13.    Your MarkedMaster gedcom should now have only those that you marked with the flag Split
14.    Load UnMarkedMaster.ged and run split tree helper and select the second option, Delete all records  Found by the query below, then select your Marked query from the dropdown.  Pick any other options you need, and click Delete
15.    Your UnMarkedMaster.ged should now have only those records that were not marked with the Split flag.

I did something similar to this a few years ago when I split a large gedom into two seperate entities.  Double check my logic before you start.

Re: split project

David Potter

I tend to use a Shared Note to describe what actions I have taken within the Project. Use ADD > Shared Note. I use the Custom ID field to record the date with an underscore for same date entries. There is of course a date/time stamp for last updated. But that's how I do it. See attached image.
I then use the Copy Project to create a copy and make changes as necessary along with suitable Backups of course. Be aware not to make the Copy Project 'Name'  to long or complicated to avoid issues with Windows Path Names.

Good morning.

I have stupidly managed two blank (i.e. labelled "[untitled]")  entries in the "Source Records" list of the "Select source ..." pane that is displayed when you click on "Add Citation" and do not seem to be able to delete them or give them a name. Each has a record id but is otherwise blank.

Is it possible to delete them?

I realise that they are doing no harm but they annoy me.

Thanks. Yes its going take ages to go over each entry and sort it. Luckily I can't go any place at the moment. I have merged all the phone numbers and will delete them. They are of no real use to me.

Re: tidy up

Mike Tate

Yes, assuming you did not enter that data, then it must have come from GEDCOM imported data.

It is very important immediately after a GEDCOM import to review the data before merging it with your master Project.

The FHUG Knowledge Base has advice for importing from many popular products identifying their peculiarities.

See https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian

You will probably have to review each Place record, check where it is used, and adjust the data accordingly.

There is no magic app or plugin, because they would need some logical rules, and this data appears to be random.

There are no other data fields than the standard ones provided by FH based on the GEDCOM standard.

However, names like a bridegroom can be added as a spouse Individual record, bridesmaids as Fact Witnesses, etc.

Most other data may have to go into the Note field, perhaps as a Labelled Note custom fact field.

See the FHUG Knowledge Base ~ Narrative Report Fact Sentence Templates ~ Custom Fact Fields:

https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:narrative_report_fact_sentence_templates#custom_fact_fields

I decided today to tidy up my FH project and so I started with DATA - Places. What a mess, I assume this is something thats caused by importing other gedcom files.  I had Phone numbers, Bridegroom names, Flower girl etc etc. and the list goes on. Even marriage celebrants names in the place field.
I guess the only way to fix this is to setup a input field for each these and enter the names, OR add them to the notes field.

Any suggestions. I can see its going take weeks to sort, cause this is only the Place date so far. Is there a app or add on that sets up fields for such input...

Thanks so much!
I use FTM for synching with ancestry.com now.
I treat ancestry.com as the master for now.
I will experiment with the other way also.

As your one page will be a pdf, that one page can be large, so is there a need to try to manipulate the people into a small area? A pdf can be zoomed in so legibility is not normally an issue.

Thanks so much for the lightning fast responses. I do not want to interfere with anyone's weekend! This is becoming my hobby / obsession ....

For me, it's mostly the printing that i want to be on one page, so the pdf approach could work for me.

I will take a look at the forum. Re-reading the documentation is helping me. I'm not sure how forum attachments work differently than this, but i  will take a look.

I think that the family historian smart tree is the key thing that is much better than the other programs that i have tried so far. The reporting is pretty good also. @Peter

Do you wish for the one page to be printed on paper, or to be viewed as a pdf file on a computer?
