I think you are right; I created a GEDCOM file very quickly to be able to print the tree diagrams. Didn't really study the information booklet in detail as at the time I was in a hurry and just wanted the means to print off trees.
I can export a GEDCOM file from Genes Reunited. And yes, I realise it's not fully compatible.
Thank you so much for all the assistance. I'll give all you suggest a go.

Hi Chris,

i.e. After opening FH you use File > Gedcom File Tasks rather than File > Project Window.

Please confirm.

Genes Reunited has far fewer features than FH and its GEDCOM file format is not totally compatible.

That probably explains why some of your data did not transfer over.

Do you know how to export a GEDCOM file from Genes Reunited?

Having got that GEDCOM use File > Project Window > New Project > Import a GEDCOM File as advised by David.

You will then need to make a great many adjustments by hand and using Plugins to make the data FH compatible.

The original GEDCOM source material, etc, may be useful for inserting into your new Project so don’t delete that yet.

There is advice in the FHUG Knowledge Base wiki on Importing to Family Historian:

https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian

It does not have specific advice for Genes Reunited but read the steps of other products to get a general idea of the process and how to repair common residual problems.

I bought Family Historian 6 some time ago, used it to create family tree diagrams to print for various family members I was visiting, then didn’t update it. My tree is stored and updated on Genes Reunited. Now I want to use Family Historian 6 to the full, but the original GEDCOM I transferred is completely out of date. I would like to delete the whole thing and transfer a new GEDCOM from Genes Reunited. How do I do this? I’ve found information on how it should be done in the Help Guide but I still can’t work out how to even get to a delete button. I don’t want to merge, just begin again, as none of the source material, anecdotes, etc transferred over anyway.

My own project is located in a different place to where it suggests it should be located. I have to access it via the Sample Project window, and go into File. Please help.

Personally I would leave the old tree where it is for now at least. It could be useful for cross referencing you can always Delete it later. So to create a new project go to: File > Project Window > New Project > Import a Gedcom File

Hello Patrick,
They way I do it is to make the last viewed person the file root person.
I had the same frustration when I first started using Family Historian.
Select the person you want then on the top menu click on Edit then File Root then Set as File Root.

Another method.
Family Historian opens to the "ROOT PERSON" (which I suspect is your Person 1),
Make the last person you worked on the Root Person by right clicking on the name in the Focus Window and selecting from the drop down list.
You can always reset to Person 1 (or any other) later.

Hello,
I would like FH to start up showing the same person I was looking at when I last closed it, instead of always reverting to Person 1.

Is there a way to do this?

Re: split project

Mike Tate

I don’t really understand the question and you don’t explain why you need to split a Project.

Usually, it is not advisable to split a Project permanently, so no cross-reference is required.

You don’t say what split data items you want to put the MARKER or FLAG in.

Anyway, when a Project is split, the data is permanently deleted so there is nothing left to add a flag to.

Maybe you misunderstand how the Split Tree Helper operates.

I look forward to a more detailed explanation of your objectives and the process you were planning to use.

Is there a way to put a MARKER or FLAG in when you split a project so you have a reference which file contains the split data??

Re: split project

Paul Tanner-Tremaine

Possible steps you could take:
1.    Create a new Flag, call it say Split
2.    Backup your project/gedcom - for reference I'll call it Master
3.    Go through the project and mark/tick all those who you want to split from Master with the new Split flag ticked.
4.    Create a new custom query that show all individuals that have Split ticked - call it say Marked
5.    Create another query that shows all individuals that do NOT have Split ticked - call it say UnMarked
6.    Those two queries should show which Individuals you have or have not marked and the number of rows for each should add up to your original Indi count
7.    Backup your Master gedcom again.
8.    Goto 'master'.fhdata and make a copy of the Master gedcom - Ctrl-C
9.    Paste the copy Ctrl-V and rename the gedcom Copy as say MarkedMaster.ged
10.    Paste again and rename the Copy as say UnMarkedMaster.ged
11.    Effectively at this stage you will have 3 gedcoms : Master, Marked and UnMarked or whatever you decided to call them.
12.    Load MarkedMaster.ged and run split tree helper and select the third option, Delete all records  Not Found by the query below, then select your Marked query from the dropdown.  Pick any other options you need, and click Delete
13.    Your MarkedMaster gedcom should now have only those that you marked with the flag Split
14.    Load UnMarkedMaster.ged and run split tree helper and select the second option, Delete all records  Found by the query below, then select your Marked query from the dropdown.  Pick any other options you need, and click Delete
15.    Your UnMarkedMaster.ged should now have only those records that were not marked with the Split flag.

I did something similar to this a few years ago when I split a large gedom into two seperate entities.  Double check my logic before you start.

Re: split project

David Potter

I tend to use a Shared Note to describe what actions I have taken within the Project. Use ADD > Shared Note. I use the Custom ID field to record the date with an underscore for same date entries. There is of course a date/time stamp for last updated. But that's how I do it. See attached image.
I then use the Copy Project to create a copy and make changes as necessary along with suitable Backups of course. Be aware not to make the Copy Project 'Name'  to long or complicated to avoid issues with Windows Path Names.

I have stupidly managed two blank (i.e. labelled "[untitled]")  entries in the "Source Records" list of the "Select source ..." pane that is displayed when you click on "Add Citation" and do not seem to be able to delete them or give them a name. Each has a record id but is otherwise blank.

Is it possible to delete them?

I realise that they are doing no harm but they annoy me.
