Re: Gedcom help

Helena Coney

Hello Mike

When exporting from Tree View, there is not much to chose from compared to other programmes as per the box below

The only errors were missing links for photos which were not in Tree view.

I have just reviewed the Gedcom file in Wordpad and 1 OCCU is empty yet as you can see, there are clearly occupations entered

I even thought of transferring via Ancestry but again the same thing happens

Helena,

FH is pretty good at importing whatever is in the GEDCOM file.

Since the Occupations were also missing via RootsMagic then my guess is that TreeView is not exporting some (or all) of them.

I presume you chose to ‘Include private facts’ in the TreeView Export GEDCOM dialogue.

Are there any clues in the FH Windows > Log Files > Exception Report?

Are there any Unrecognised Data Fields (UDF) from Tools > Uncategorised Data.

Do you know how to review a GEDCOM file?

Open it in a plain text editor such as Windows Notepad or WordPad.

Search for 1 OCCU which is the Occupation tag. Do you find any?

I have just upgraded to v7 after having a years break from FH.  I am trying to import my very large file of over 17000 people back into FH v7 from tree view (the software not online tree).  However the occupations have all vanished in the transfer.  everything else seems to be there - notes, 1939 census but not the occupation.  I then tried going tree view - roots magic to FH but the same thing happened. Can anyone help?  I don't fancy inputting over 1000 occupation's but want to start using FH after paying for the upgrade

Yes, the place to start is the FHUG Knowledge Base ‘Planning and Tracking Your Research’:

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/planning-and-tracking-your-research/

That offers several different strategies including Named Lists.

Are the techniques you mentioned documented somewhere.  In the past I have used a non-printing event when I completed working on an individual but would be interested in other methods.

I select "Birth" in the Sources For: box, select the citation and select "copy".
I then select "Name" in the Sources For: box and then select "paste".

This works perfectly well in FH v7.0.0, the problem only occurs after updating to v7.0.2.

I have reverted to FH v7.0.0 to allow me to continue doing things I have got used to.

Re: Sources and linking media

There are various techniques for managing the type of reworking you are planning.

One method uses Named Lists to keep track of who you have reviewed, with Notes of what needs updating.

The thing is to be methodical. You may even discover new sources that were not available when you last looked.

Good luck, Mike

I suspect you are selecting Name in the Sources For: box.

Instead, open the Main tab and select the Name field there, then the Paste Citation works OK.

Yes this is a known issue.  I have reported it and it has been acknowledged to be a problem. The same issue occurs if you try to copy to Whole Record or Fact Witnesses.

Thanks to all for your responses.

I will need to think about those empty death facts before I even consider deleting them. Beside having unsourced facts I'm not sure of the additional impact of keeping or deleting them

In the mean time Mike the query you suggested works great and I can eliminate from the result set all those empty death facts and I can clean up any other facts that don't have sources.

Is Rootsmagic really is assuming that anyone not explicitly marked as living has died?  If so a lot of those empty death events should not be there at all.

Here are copies of two gedcom files I created in Rootsmagic. I am in the process of moving to FH but there is one glitch in FH that has been reported and passed to the developers that I need before completely moving. The first gedcom is one I created with a single person and there is a checkbox that indicates living or not.  Not sure about the terminology of a flag in this case. I am aware that "flags" do not transfer. The difference between the two files is just after the "3 ROLE Witness". If the living status is checked then there is nothing about a death. If I don't check the living box then there is an additional line "1 DEAT Y". This is probably what is causing the blank death fact in FH.

Re: Import and created death

Mike Tate

Edward,

You have effectively answered your own question.

It is RootsMagic that is manufacturing the DEAT Event not FH.

The ‘Y’ is a GEDCOM requirement when there are no subsidiary Date or Place details.

There are a number of solutions but I’m not sure deleting the blank Death events is one of them, because without them those people could mistakenly be treated as Living.

Firstly, in the ‘All Facts Without Sources’ Query, you can click on the leftmost ‘Fact’ column heading to sort into order.

Then all the Death events are grouped together, which makes reviewing all the other events much easier.

It is easy to modify the ‘All Facts Without Sources’ Query to exclude empty Death events by adding the following to the Rows tab:

Condition: Exclude if

Expression: =IsTrue((FactLabel(%FACT%) = "Death") and (%FACT.PLAC% = "") and NullDate(%FACT.DATE%))

Operator: Is true

In the FHUG Knowledge Base Downloads there is the ‘All Empty Facts’ Query with an explanation of how to delete such facts:

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/download/all-empty-facts-3/

But I’m not sure it is wise to delete those empty Death events.

Is there a way to not create an empty death fact in this case? It creates way too many errors in the query for facts without sources for that query to be really useful.

That is correct but Edward talked very specifically about a “living flag” not a Death event.

It may depend on what product produced the GEDCOM file and perhaps ‘manufactured’ the Death event itself.

Without seeing the test GEDCOM file before importing to FH it is difficult to speculate.
