No, no such dialogue appeared, Trevor.

Hi Kathy,

Are you a first-time user of FH or did you install FH V7 over FH V6?

In the Project Window, what is the Location at the bottom set to?

It should default to ‘Documents\Family Historian Projects’ and that folder should have been created when FH V7 was installed.

But it is saying that the folder does not exist. Can you confirm that it does actually exist?

If you are starting from scratch FH will try to create your new project in the default location.  To quote from the Help files:

"By default, this folder will be "Family Historian Projects" in the default Windows location for user documents.  However, you can change this location to whatever you want. To do so, click on the location text as a link. A menu appears with 2 options: Choose Location and Reset Location to Installation Default.
Alternatively, you can also change the location by clicking on the More Tasks... button, and then clicking on Choose Location for Projects on the Project List submenu that appears."

Is there any reason why FH couldn't find your Documents folder?

Lorna

Help, please?   I was so anxious to start my project!  Thank you!

Kathy, after you installed FH7 were you initially presented with a dialogue to enter your name and the names of your parents, then assign a name to the project? This would have happened before you encountered the Project Window.

Excuse me, I meant to say, I am fairly certain we downloaded the software correctly.

Re: Removing a downloaded property box tab

Julia,

Open that Wills tab then use the cog Menu > Customize Data Entry.

There you increase the tab position number or use More Tab Tasks > Delete Tab “Will”…

It might be possible to customise it further to show what each beneficiary inherited but I would need to know how you have entered that info.

Removing a downloaded property box tab

Julia Vokes

Hello

I’m running FH v6 and earlier today I downloaded the Wills Property box tab from the FHUG.  But having looked into it a bit more, I’d like to delete it as it doesn’t do what I’d hoped (specify what each beneficiary inherited).  Can someone please advise how I can delete this tab?  Or else can I move the tab to the end of the Property box tabs?

Thank in advance

Regards

Julia

Re: Plugin - Files in media folder and not linked to project

Mike thank you so much I think the fog is lifting slightly. A lot of the items in the plugin report appear to be duplicates. Many with slight changes to the file name such as: (1) or 'png' rather than 'jpg'. I will continue to check through the report list to make sure they are all represented within my FH gedcom file
Once again thank for your patience.

Mike,
Thanks for your reply and advice.
You are correct, I am not planning to run both laptops long term - the existing laptop is nearing the end of its life and becoming more unreliable.

Re: Plugin - Files in media folder and not linked to project

In FH, open the Media Window or in the Records Window open the Media tab.

What they list are the Media records in the FH GEDCOM file.

The ‘File’ column shows the links to each Media file itself.

If those files are within the Project Media folder then they all start with Media\ and are followed by any subfolder and lastly the file name & type.

e.g. Media\xxx.jpg or Media\Photo\abc.jpg

That is only the final part of the file path relative to the Project folder.

The rest depends on where the Project folder is located but in your case is:

C:\Users\james\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Pam family\Pam family.fh_data\

So the full file path that would be seen in Windows File Explorer or an image Editor/Player is the combination of those two parts:

C:\Users\james\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Pam family\Pam family.fh_data\Media\xxx.jpg

The full file path is also what is listed by the ‘Check for Unlinked Media’ plugin.

But every path it lists is NOT found in any Media record ‘File’ link described above.

Thanks Mike

When you refer to the ‘media record file link’ is that the same thing as the 'folder path' that I find when I go to file information  in editor/player? If I have got this wrong please  could tell me where to find it.

James

Thanks Victor,

Though I do use the inbuilt narrative (and other) reports, they are necessarily formulaic and from time to time I want to write something more interpretive and analytical. I'm currently looking at how 6 siblings, all legatees of their uncle (the court case spent decades in Chancery) ended up in very different situations.

I think I will just do a separate note for each of the siblings and their descendants with linked intro and conclusion.

Instead of writing narative reports have you tried 'view' on the tool bar then prtompt 'publish' and chose from the list. FG will then generate a narrative report.

Or is that kind of report you are not seeking

According to Word, it's 33,297 characters with spaces, 27478 without spaces, 5813 words, 480 lines.

There are a few big words in there. I do try!!

I too am using notes to input extensive data but I have not yet reached that limit. Just out of curiosity you say 5,000 words but how many characters is that? If you are using big words with spaces and punctuation you may be hitting an addressing limit.

We are all familiar with the 32k vs 64k systems at least by name. If FH may still be bound by the 32k limit in some places then that may be the limit that is being imposed. If I take 5000 words and add spaces and punctuation I come very close to the 32k addressing limit.

If FH is trying to accommodate older systems then the 32k may stand for awhile. Other users have provided some unique ways to get around a limit like this and I will certainly keep them in mind if I hit this limit.

Also the amount of space is not limited to just characters, spaces and punctuation. Formatting also takes space so you may not see a hard limit of 5000 words or 32k codepoints that make up the 32k addressing limit. My point is the number words or characters may be flexible depending on what you have entered.

Narrative reports saved as a word document can be edited to suite how you want it. I tend to edit it with mainly with cencus images. I use AS and add the images vertically. When I do a narrative report I increas the size of the images to cove the whole A4 page so they could be read. I do the same with other images like BMD's

I have also done an individual narrative report for one person. This is available by thre method I mentioned before. It gives you the choice of ancestors, descendants and individual.

I did an individual report a couple of days ago and sent it to a cousin who corrected me on one name. Imlisted the name as her sister when in fact it was her husbands sister
