Hello there
Hope you can help - I am in a right muddle. IT and tech scares me witless!  And I cannot get my usual friendly help in to help me out due to lock down! 

Due to various computer and laptop break downs etc etc I have FH6 installed on my PC but not on my laptop.  I have lost my licence number and cannot install on my new laptop. 

So family thought it would be a good idea to buy me FH6 for Christmas unknowingly before FH7 came out.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to load it and work with it yet.  Am I still able to load Version 6 and then upgrade to 7? 

Also, all my projects are saved in Dropbox -  FH opens in Dropbox and that is where I work on them.  If I delete the old version and install the new will my projects be save in Dropbox and will the new version open my projects from Dropbox?

That depends on the year. From memory, I think I counted 3 basic formats of index data since the born-digital stuff was introduced. Mostly just minor changes like omitting the quarter at some point.

Victor,

If you use the GRO online index for births (I suspect it is the same for deaths but marriages are not available), it does list the quarter, e.g.

DARVELL, ANDREW CHARLES
GRO Reference: DOR Q2/1984 in ST ALBANS (5351B) Volume 10 Page 865

It is a bit long-winded as there is no download option.

Just a thought, have you tried using the Find and Replace option under the Edit menu, you can limit changes to just Places, or Addresses as you wish. I have successfully used this many times as well as the Search and Replace plugin. You would need to be careful if a place refers to more than one location though, i.e. Amsterdam and New Amsterdam. Just make a back up first though just in case and inspect the results output.

You say 'sometimes' added country. You should always add country. When it comes to Yorkshire always add East, North, West and (these days) South. There are similar named places in each part of the county

New user place/address advice

Looking for advice.  New user with FH … coming from Rootsmagic.

Place and address setup (columns).  I haven’t decided on how to use each.  I am going through examples in my tree and see how they work with FH.


I have the following location …

St. Michael Church, 8237 South Shore Drive, Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States.


If I lump the location only in Place or Address, I will need 6 columns. Name, street&number, city, county, state, and country.  Correct?


If I split between place and address I would have 2 columns for address, and 4 columns for place.  Correct?

               Place:  Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States

               Address:  St. Michael Church, 8237 South Shore Drive


What if I have just the street & address (no name)?  IE:  1234 Water St., Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States.  I would still need a leading entry ( , ) for name correct?


The entry would look like …

               ,1234 Water St., Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States

Do I have a correct understanding?


Lastly … I do have ancestors in Wales which I have not researched yet.  For proper locations in the UK (Wales) how many columns would I need for place if I put ALL the information in place?

How many columns in place and address if I split the location?


Any advice would be appreciated.

I highly recommend using the 'reverse order' trick posted by John Hanson, suggested by Simon Orde, while cleaning up place names.

I recommend NOT putting street addresses into place names.  (I am currently getting ready for a project to find people in the 1950 census by browsing, and am investigating other solutions for keeping track of street-level data.)

I recommend either standardizing the place on a modern place for ease in geo-mapping, while keeping the name of the place as it appears in the record in research notes, or standardizing on a specific gazetteer. E.g. for Germany, FamilySearch uses Meyers' gazetteer as its standard. If I find a place in the online Meyers Gaz https://www.meyersgaz.org/ I copy and paste the location as it appears there so FH will match what Meyers' Gaz has. 

The one thing I haven't settled on for my Do-Over is whether or not to include UK registration districts as part of the place name for my (mostly) English places.  The advantage would be that it helps to differentiate Kingsbridge RD from a GRO registration from Kingsbridge the place.The US has town, county, state, country and having four jurisdictions there, it seems sensible to have the town/parish, reg district, county, country in four parts too.

All the commercial websites use the same database provided by the GRO from entries from 1984 onwards

It was updated yearly until 2005 when they stopped providing the updates

 

The new GRO website has the data post 2005 however it is missing some of the information on both births and deaths and of course marriages are not included

I have the same symptoms that are due to various subsidiary fields added to a Fact.
In the case of the Death event it is due to the Cause field.
Actually, any fact can have a Cause field and has the same effect.
The problem also affects Individual Summary Reports.

It appears to be working properly for censuses, births & baptisms, just not for deaths

I am having a problem trying to solve a puzzle with familty group sheets. I don't remember what my options were with version 6, but I know that with deaths of individuals, what I got looked like this:
Death 29 Dec 1879 (age 75) Brompton, Kensington, Middlesex
Cause: heart disease
Address: 10 Knaresborough Road, Brompton, Kensington, Middlesex

What I get now - the first linie is the same, but the second is as follows

Cause: heart disease. Address 10 Knaresborough Road, Brompton, Kensington, Middlesex. 10 Knaresborough Road, Brompton, Kensington, Middlesex


The settings I'm using are

Thanks for the input.  I have several citations that are bad from the time I migrated from TMG to RM that needs fixing.  With RM8 now able to merge citations, I can merge them, fix all in one fell swoop, and import to FH.

Those are the only RM fixes I am planning right now.  Soooo much to learn before I make any other decisions.

Right now I am evaluating lumping vs splitting (  again! :-)  ).  With AS and plugins, I am rethinking strategy.

So, I am entering data in a throw away project ( real work in RM7 ) until I understand more about everything.
