I am trying to produce a family web page using the standard FH v7 web page. I am not able to get the pictures I want into the Summary report for the web either individual or family but when I try the same thing on the same standalone reports all is OK .

The problem only occurs I think when there is a photo with more than one link. I get a photograph but not the one I want despite making sure the photo I want Is number 1 in the preferences and the options are set at use normal order of preferences or the other 2 options. One of the photos is a large group with a lot of links and none of them come up but it also applies with just 2 links.

What am I missing

Re: FH7 Citation Window

Patricia,

That is exactly the best way to arrange the display in FH V7.

You may not have noticed but that floating Citation window does much more than the Citation pane in FH V6.

It provides access to BOTH the Citation and the Source record for Text From Source, Notes, and Media, etc, etc.

So you don’t have to open a separate Source record window as you did in FH V6 to get to the Source record details.

Also, there are useful options on the cog Menu, such as Show Source Record’s Citations.

So for example with a Census Citation, it will show all the other household members sharing the same Citation.

Thank you for your response. I've partly solved the problem by resizing the Citation window and fitting it into the lower part of the Source pane, so that it actually looks very similar to what it was before. The image below shows the result. The only thing is that, If I close the Property window, I then lose the Citation window, but just clicking the yellow scroll icon brings it up again in the same place.

I've found the answer. It was an option at the bottom of the sources pane.

Re: V7 text format problem in Report

Hi Richard,

Have you double-checked that every paragraph of text in the Note has the Justify icon enabled?

You may need to post a screenshot of both the Note box and the Report for us to understand what is happening.

However, be aware that attaching screenshots to these Email may suffer a significant delay as they are manually vetted by administrators.

You get a much faster turn round in the FHUG Forum that does not manually vet attachments.

I have chosen the Justify text format in the Individual Note field, but when I produce the (say) Individual Summary Report, most of the text appears justified but other parts of the same paragraph appear aligned left.  Is this a problem with V7 ?

Lorna is mistaken about your Citation window obscuring the toolbar at the bottom.

The cog wheel icon is the one next to the large blue arrow.

In your screenshot I can see that you have positioned the floating Citation Window over the bottom of the ‘Sources for’ pane, obscuring the toolbar for that pane.  If you move the citation window you will see the toolbar in the ‘Sources for ‘ pane has a cog wheel icon.  Click this icon and choose Display Citation As.. and then choose Source Record.  You should now see the name of the Source record displayed.

Correction: you can still see the toolbar, below where you have positioned the Citation window.

Re: Family Shared Residence

Mike Tate

Welcome to FH David.

Unfortunately, FH V7 has overlooked implementing the shared Family Residence fact.
There is a bug report submitted by mostly other RM migrants awaiting fixing.

What you will find is an Unrecognised Data Field (UDF) with tag * _RESI that is shown on the All tab of the Family record.

However, FH users tend to avoid shared Family facts except those that specifically apply to the couple such as Engagement, Marriage & Divorce.

The explanation is that typically other household members are involved such as children or grandparents and the Family facts do not include those.

So usually we use Individual standard Census and Residence facts for every person in the household.

Such facts are tied together by the same Source Citation.

That tactic is well supported by other FH tools such as the Census Report, the Ancestral Sources program, and various Plugins.

Another popular tactic is to have one Individual Census or Residence fact for the head of household and shared Fact Witnesses for all the others.

Hi

I am very new to family historian and can’t find out how to add a shared family residence for husband and wife sourced from a UK census.

My other software is RootsMagic and in that I can just add a shared residence.

All the data I have imported from RM via GEDCOM has copied over, so I get for example Sources for ‘Marr. (John): Residence*’.  For new residences I try to add it seems to be an individual fact only.

What don’t I understand about shared facts?

The help doesn’t help much.

When I installed v7, the Sources pane was docked below the Property box, but not the Citations Window. I changed the Sources pane to dock at the side as that is where I like it. I've tried Tools>Preferences>Property Box, but it only sets the position of the Sources pane, not the Citation window. Nor does the workspaces tab. Are we confusing two different windows here?

Thank you for trying to help

Re: New prospective user

Leslie P <leslie@...>

Hi Michael! I'm also in trial phase prior to converting from RM7 to FH7. Most of the things on my "clean up before migrating" list have become "clean up after migrating" because I'm finding that FH is so VASTLY superior to RM in terms of both viewing and modifying the database that it's not even fair to compare. Or, I can just make something not even export from RM in the first place, so I don't have to worry about it.

For example, I was concerned about my old Reference Numbers from a thing I did years ago. I deleted a bunch of them, one at a time, in RM. Then realized I could either delete it all in one fell swoop in an FH query, or I can just set that fact not to export to GEDCOM. Problem solved. Done.

Next I had an item about fixing up burial dates to make sure they were "after death date" rather than blank. Then I discovered the "timeline" aspect of facts in FH - it's set to always show burial facts "after death date", so they automatically show in the right order without me doing a dang thing.

In short, there's not a lot we need to do in RM before bringing it over to FH, once we're in FH (and have the full version so we can use plugins) I think we'll be able to manage our data in some pretty outstanding ways.

A lot to learn, of course, and we all use the product in different ways. What I'm doing is exporting from RM (with RM specific data), importing into FH, having a look see, making some notes of things I want to clean up a bit in RM primarily because I know how to do it in RM, and then doing another export-import go and looking at something new to tweak.

FH7 Citation Window

I have just installed my upgrade to FH having read as much as I possibly could first. I can't say I understood it all but will get there eventually. I've discovered how to dock my Source Pane at the side as I like it and I've discovered how to make the Citation window appear. What I would like to do is dock the Citation window where it was before - at the base of the Source pane and to have the two always showing. Is this possible or does the Citation window always have to be floating?
Thanks for you help

I have not touched any of the Templated Source/Citation sources at
all. What I do is when I find a GRO source, etc, I add the citation
to a Generic Source and fill in all the fields as I used to.
To make it easier on myself, I modified the layout of the generic
source via the cog wheel, so that the Text from Source and Notes all
showed on the one open generic source/citation screen.
The Essentials and other collections are good guidelines if you are
totally new to FH, and have the time to explore them all.

There are quite a few RM migrants using FH so there is plenty of advice.

RM is also being used as a gateway to synchronise with Ancestry.

As I said, there already is a Plugin in FH for swapping Source records.

Thanks for the reply Mike.

Rootsmagic is my current software.  I do make changes to the RM database via SQL.

I am leaning to cleanup the sources in RM as there will be a learning curve in just using FM let alone learning the addin language and syntax.

In most cases it would be swapping one source for another.

I have more learning and understanding before I take any steps.

Thank you,
michael
