Re: QUERY: V7 icon size & spacing in diagrams compared to V6

Graham Kent

Hi Paul,

Some points that may help on the size of icons -

1. The type of image used for icons has changed from Bitmap ( .bmp ) to “Enhanced MetaFile” (.emf) and can normally be found at C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Icons. The emf icons are much better at scaling and always seem clearer than previous types (bmp) that I used. Most of the standard icons are included in the new ones added to fH7 including the Bilko Icons :)

2. To adjust the spacing between the icons on a diagram, go to Diagram Options - Dimensions - More Dimensions (button at bottom) - Other Dimensions (at bottom) - Gap Between Icons boxes at bottom right.  Mine are set to 0.05" & 0.02" and the icons appear close to the Individual box on my diagrams.

My suggestion would be to change your icons to the new ones, then adjust the size of them to suit (Diagram Options - Boxes - then select the condition you wish to edit and click "edit features" on bottom left.

BTW - the "Bilko Icons" have been converted to the emf format and included with the new set of Icons under "Icons 2".

Regards
Bilko

DO NOT REPORT IT TO CALICO PIE – CALICO PIE DO NOT MAINTAIN EITHER PLUGIN.  if you want to report it anywhere else, comment on the Plugin entry in the store.

Hi,

I use icons on diagrams (via expressions) to flag individuals where I have their BMD certificates as well as census entries. I suspect a lot of others do this as well. I upgraded to version 7 yesterday. When I produced a diagram the icons were much smaller and more spaced out than when doing the same thing in V6. Presumably something has changed between versions as I hadn't changed any settings. I had a play to try and improve this but am not getting very far so wondered if anyone else has experienced this and has the solution please?

I've included a screen shot to show what it looks like in version 7. Not sure if I can find a previous version 6 for comparison as I don't have these flags when I save diagrams.

Hoping that someone can help.

Many thanks, Paul

Re: Ancestral Sources 7

If you are likely to need that smaller form a lot then design a new Census Template based on the existing one with a slightly different name.

e.g. US Census Ancestry

Probably other Census years on Ancestry will also have fewer columns, so you will add a new version for each year as necessary.

Since you are only deleting columns it should be easy to copy the existing 1940 template to your new 1940 template and just delete the columns.

If it really is a common type of Census form on Ancestry (and elsewhere) then maybe Nick will add those templates to AS or they could be shared in the FHUG Knowledge Base downloads.

Hello,

When using AS7 to input details from the 1940 US Census, the AS Template shows a lot of columns that do not appear in the census form - or at least, in the version of the census form that is shown by Ancestry. Using AS7 'auto text' the result is that in the 'text from source' tab of the source/citation in FH7 I have a lot of columns that are empty apart from the header. I can edit those colums in FH7 by laboriously deleting each header and then minimising the column width, but is there any straightforward way, either in AS7 before saving, or in FH7 after saving, to delete those columns altogether?

Unfortunately, Paul has posted twice, so there are two threads on the go.

Trevor, I don’t understand how choosing a different type of Diagram has any impact on the size of Icons.

However, I cannot see any significant difference between FH V6 and FH V7.

I suspect Paul’s recollection of Icon size is mistaken.

My initial suggestion "Try the Ancestor And Descendant diagram which is labelled Both on the FH v7 toolbar" has not appeared in this thread.

You can manually change the size of the icons. For me the "100 dpi" size is usually the best.

Hi Paul,

I get that effect with Bilko_Icons on both FH V6 and FH V7.

Other icons are somewhat larger, but the same on both V6 and V7.

Hi,

I've just installed V7 as a replacement to V6. I make use of icons in diagrams (via expressions) to flag which records I have BMD certificates for as well as which census I have found the person in. I tried to produce a new diagram without changing any settings and the icons are coming out really small compared to what I had before. See attached. I've started to try and change a few setting but without total success so wanted to check if anyone else has already had and solved this issue.

Not sure if I can find an old image from V6 but certainly the icons were bigger and closer together.

Thanks for any advice, Paul

Yes.

Go to Tools > Preferences.... > Internet Data Matches

Click the One to Disable, then Settings...

Change Automatic Matching to Disabled then OK twice

Re: Storing Family History Events and Notes

To create a self-contained ‘diary’ try a Source record rather than a Repository.

That allows multiple Media to be attached and rich text formatting in the Text From Source and Note box.

Then Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > Source Summary Report will produce a customisable report.

Also, that Source can be used to derive facts for the Individuals involved.

Have you tried doing a narrative report?

Go to the person you want to stat from. Open view from the top then promnpt publish and select narrative report. You will then have a choice of how many descendants you wish for this report. The report will generate all the names and images under these names

Good Evening,

At the outset I want to commend this group as being very knowledable and helpful for my past queries. I am a new FH user.

I want to store multiple family history events/narratives  each being multiple pages long. Our family members want to record their life experiences as occurred from partitioning of the country, experiences as refugees, professional achievements etc. I expect several dozen contributions containing text and pictures. We would like to publish this as a part of family history at a later date.

What is the best way to do so? I started creating repository records. I am not able to add picture to the text and to edit entered text. Also, when I try to create a book/booklet with other family/individual records etc, each repository item appears as a separate chapter – rather than a chapter called “Repository Records” and the dozen plus items listed within it.

I am sure FH experienced users can provide me the guidance on how to handle the situation of recording major family events and start me on the right track.

Please stay safe and Happy New Year
