QUERY: V7 icon size & spacing in diagrams compared to V6

Paul Terrill

Hi,

I've just installed V7 as a replacement to V6. I make use of icons in diagrams (via expressions) to flag which records I have BMD certificates for as well as which census I have found the person in. I tried to produce a new diagram without changing any settings and the icons are coming out really small compared to what I had before. See attached. I've started to try and change a few setting but without total success so wanted to check if anyone else has already had and solved this issue.

Not sure if I can find an old image from V6 but certainly the icons were bigger and closer together.

Thanks for any advice, Paul

Thanks. I found that after I sent my question which was about the "missing" icon on the tool bar.

To create a self-contained ‘diary’ try a Source record rather than a Repository.

That allows multiple Media to be attached and rich text formatting in the Text From Source and Note box.

Then Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > Source Summary Report will produce a customisable report.

Also, that Source can be used to derive facts for the Individuals involved.

Happy New Year, Mike Tate

Have you tried doing a narrative report?

Go to the person you want to stat from. Open view from the top then promnpt publish and select narrative report. You will then have a choice of how many descendants you wish for this report. The report will generate all the names and images under these names

I want to store multiple family history events/narratives  each being multiple pages long. We would like to publish this as a part of family history at a later date.

What is the best way to do so? I started creating repository records. I am not able to add picture to the text and to edit entered text. Also, when I try to create a book/booklet with other family/individual records etc, each repository item appears as a separate chapter – rather than a chapter called “Repository Records” and the dozen plus items listed within it.

I am sure FH experienced users can provide me the guidance on how to handle the situation of recording major family events and start me on the right track.

Diagram Lock Window Icon

Brian Horridge

Hi and Happy New Year to everyone

I'm using FH6 and I have it set to reuse diagram windows so when I'm flicking through several people I do not end up with a lot of diagram window.  However, when I used to use Ver 5 I had an Icon on the toolbar that allowed me to lock a specific diagram window to prevent it being re-used.  However, the toolbar Icon seems missing and I can no longer find how to re-instate it.  I appreciate that I can lock a window by the menu "Window - Lock Window (prevent re-use)" but I used to find having a clickable Icon much easier.  The Toolbar Icon was the padlock symbol shown against the drop-down menu.

Can the toolbars be customised in FH6 ??  (I cannot remember if I customised my FH5 or if it was standard)

Many thanks

Brian

Re: Plugins/AS updates

Mike Tate

Yes, it is similar to Plugins that state they are compatible with FH V5, V6, V7 and similarly adapt where necessary to the different features, some of which go beyond the GEDCOM file.

e.g.

FH V7 allows Project local Fact Type definitions and my Change Any Fact Tag and Export Gedcom File plugins will cope with those in their next published version.

Can I check that if data is entered using AS7 it will be OK with a FH6 project as it has been mentioned that the underlying GEDCOM file structure in FH7 is different from FH6  (or does AS7 detect the FH file version and act accordingly??)

Many thanks

Some Plugins may check the FH version is compatible but don’t rely on that.

2) AS V7 works with all FH versions.

Re: Census data entry when different from other sources

David Potter

Hi Randy. I am using FH7 with AS7. I use the new feature in FH7 which allows you to Edit the Individual (Name) Link allowing you to record in the Text from Source table the exact name recorded in the Source. See the attached screen shot.

So the Names in Blue are actually Links to the person concerned. If you left click on a name it takes you to that person. If you right click and choose Edit you can type the actual name used within the Source. This same feature exists in AS7 for Census just now, so you can make that same Edit in AS7 or when it arrives in FH7.

Yes, that has been my plan: Leave the birth name on all census records but record the different names in census records as alternatives and link them to the census record. Thanks for your comments.

FYI: in this case, no one in my family knew that her name wasn't Susan. Everyone was surprised to learn that it was originally Zwenne.

I would leave it as it is. Over time there are people who became known by another name even if it was not her birth name.

You can add a note to mention she was known as Susan. At the end of the Individual box prompt the 'more' button this will open another box which enables you to add 'alternative name'

She probably became known as Susan simo,y because it is easier to pronounce and remember than her German name

How should this be documented in AS and FH? For example, my great-grandmother was born Zwenne Wandscheer. She married Gerrit Jan Kemkers and they emigrated from Germany in 1901. In the 1910 census her name is given as Susan. AS, of course, uses her birth name from FH as the default. Should I change her name in AS to match the 1910 census or leave it as is and record the difference as a Note?

Re: Repair of media links broken after import from Ancestry

Welcome Diane,

Unfortunately, most online family trees like Ancestry do not allow bulk export/import of any Media files via GEDCOM so FH cannot repair the links.

There is advice on this topic in the FHUG Knowledge Base for Importing to Family Historian:

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/importing-to-family-historian/

The specific section Import from Ancestry website does suggest some workarounds using either FTM 2019 or RootsMagic.

There is also much more advice about post-processing the imported GEDCOM data.

Hi Folks

Started my Family tree work with Ancestry.com in beginning of 2020, made good progress but now wanting to use my Christmas present Family Historian to give me more flexibility and do more projects.

I have managed to get 2 Family trees, Projects, onto the new software but on importing  a message appeared- Broken media links.

The Media items include both pictures and documents are showing listed and linked to the individuals but the actual documents are not available to see in the Family Historian Media.

I have 104 media links identified as broken that FH tried an Auto repair to find in a search but came back with none resolved.

I have most of the photos and documents on my computer as well as Ancestry.com

Any advice for an easy solution most welcome.
