Re: New problem with MyHeritage service on Family Historian 7

john@...

It looks as though there has been some movement on this. The Family Historian web page at https://www.family-historian.co.uk/notification?id=myheritage-stopped now tells me more. Rather than simply saying "Notification", it says

Notification

MyHeritage Service Has Stopped

The MyHeritage service has stopped. It should restart automatically if you re-open the current project or open another project. If the problem recurs, you may be able to stop it happening by closing Family Historian and restarting it. If that does not fix the problem, you should try closing Family Historian and restarting your PC.

If restarting your PC does not solve the problem, the most likely reason is that Family Historian is having difficulty accessing the MyHeritage cache file. This can happen if another program on your PC is interfering with the cache file and preventing Family Historian from accessing it when it needs to. The most likely candidate for a program that might do this is a program that automatically replicates files to a cloud drive – such as Dropbox or OneDrive. If that is the issue, you may be able to fix the problem by moving your entire project folder to another location on your PC.

If you do not use the MyHeritage service and just want to stop the message from appearing, you can do this by disabling the MyHeritage service on the ‘Internet Data Matches’ tab of Preferences (accessible from the Tools menu).

I have tried these, but without success. Perhaps others will have better fortune.

John Gibson.

Roy, When I used FH6 I also customised things like different coloured backgrounds for focus window, source pane, aspects of property box, etc, as well as  changing the fonts and sizes.  In addition to this, I changed diagrams and their backgrounds.  These options still seem to be there in FH7 - there is a Colours button in Tools - Preferences for most of these.  Unfortunately, I currently use a Mac with Crossover and the colour options are not working at all.  It is probably only a Crossover issue.  I reported this to Calico Pie quite a long time ago when using FH6 and had hoped it might have been fixed, though it’s probably a low priority for most people.  What I was able to do though is import my colour settings from when I used FH6 on a PC into my Crossover version and my previous settings do work in FH7.  Just a nuisance.  I expect PC users will be fine?

Yes the process will be the same with One Drive as it is with Dropbox.

It would be a good idea to convert all you projects to V7 before installing V7 on the laptop, but if you overlook any it won't really matter because they will be converted next time they are opened on either computer.  What you must avoid is doing it the other way round, don't go 'backwards' and open a project in V6 after it has been converted to V7.

I have been following this topic with interest and wondered if this will work the same way with One Drive?

I already have installed V7 on the PC and backed up the default project only to V7.  All is working well.

Reading from the previous emails my intention now is to download V7 upgrade onto a pen drive. Switch off the router and using the pen drive, upgrade V6 on the laptop to V7.

Would I need to back up each of my remaining projects to V7 before switching on the router and syncing?

Your advice please? Thank you.

There is an updated Search and Replace plugin in the FHUG Forum 'Plugin Discussions' that hopefully resolves the problems.

So disappointing.  Paragraphing and paragraph/carriage return conversion was the one thing that would have made FH7 a reasonable option to TMG (at least from my viewpoint).  The ability to format narrative reports in TMG was one of the leading features that set TMG off from other programs.  It is a shame that Calico Pie didn't take care of this in a version hipped to make FH7 more compatible for TMG users to replace their unsupported program.

Just to keep my original post in context. I wanted to change a single Place detail (that has no alternatives within my project at least) everywhere it can be found. Including Place, Source/Citations, Facts, Media and Rich Text. In effect Anywhere and Everywhere.

I use the Search & Replace Plug-In set for Search Only in the first instance. Once I have checked what is found is reasonable. I then make a second run in update mode. This works perfectly.

Mike Tate is investigating why the Plug-In or perhaps FH itself caused the Individual Links with the Text from Source to lose their focus. So until Mike has finished checking, we don’t yet know the Root cause.

Another example is Scalby, North Yorkshire (which is near Scarborough). There is Scalby, East Yorkshire (which is near Gilberdyke - West of Hull)

There are many similar place names in different counties so it is important to get the county name right

It could potentially be a disaster if a change in one field where a place name is used changed the spelling in all other instances.   It’s quite common for there to be two places with very similar names.   As an example, consider Cobham and Chobham in Surrey.   Suppose you already a place called Cobham in your project, with many instances of its use.  One day you accidentally record an event as having been in Cobham and then realise it should have been Chobham.  You change it in the record in which you have just entered it.  If this changed all instances of Cobham to Chobham all the others would then be wrong!

I read with interest the above topic. I too had a problem with changing the place name in a fact insofar as the record on the map changed to nowhere near the exact location after I had corrected a misspelling.

At the time Mike Tate said he could not reproduce my experience.

Now it becomes a lot clearer.

Mike now says

Changing the Place name in any Fact causes a new blank Place record to be created.

The old Place record potentially with Lat/Longitude, Notes, Media, etc, becomes unlinked

That to me smacks of a bug in the program. It is totally illogical if an amendment is made to the place in a fact for the system to create a new record, the existing one should be amended.

I hope Simon Orde will take this on board to fix this bug
