FH V7

Victor Markham

I have been checking the V7 uograde and have found a number of names have become detached from the family tree links.

I did get a validation report and it listed 7 names of children detached from their parents.

But I have discovered many names are now stand alone that is not on a tree with no oter names to connect it.

Fortunately I have FTM and the names are on there showing the connections. I then put the names it is linked to. This is going to be a lot of work to restore things.

For the record I use FTM to give links to ancestry via the hints. I don't subscribe to either of the hints shown on FH.

I have also found a change oin viewing the images. In V6 when I prompt the images they appear of my photo software and I can view them at any size I want. On V7 that doesn't happen and I can only view them on the FH viewer at a small size

HF v7 with CrossOver on Mac

Geoff Culbertson

I have been successfully running FH v6 on my Mac with CrossOver. I have now installed v7 and am having a problem in editing a citation for a census. Having added the citation I select the Text from Source tab, then the green + icon, Add to Source Record/UK/1911 UK Census then nothing happens. I can move FH windows but I cannot close them. I have also tried adding text in the Notes tab but the same happens. I eventually have to Force Close. Any ideas?

Dear Mike,

Many thanks for our advice. I have had further problems since then, so I
have decided to wipe FH V7 & all associated data and settings from my hard
drive and reinstall FH V6 and data plus settings from my external back-up.
That way I can get along with things that I need to complete and then
reconsider V7 later on. I can do without all this hassle at the moment!

Thanks Derek,
Yes, that's what I did too.  The citation date shows in the generic templates but I can't seem to get it to work in the custom templates.
Otherwise, I like the V7 changes although I'm still getting to grips with them.

Re: version 6 and version7

Dear John,

Thanks for your comments. If the Notes on Upgrading to Version 7 had
appeared at the beginning of the process, I would not have proceeded until I
had read them. However, they didn't appear until after the upgrade was
complete and the damage had been done. There should have been a health
warning attached to this upgrade, so people would know what to expect prior
to purchasing. I'm not averse to change, far from it; I just need to know
what to expect before I commit time & money to it.

I have decided to uninstall V7 and also to delete all my FH Project files
from my hard drive & get rid of the lot. Next I will reinstall my Version 6
program and then restore my databases, media files and custom settings from
my external back-up drive. That ought to give me a stable situation that
will allow me to continue with my current programme of scanning documents
and linking media files that I hope to complete by the end of January. Once
that has been completed, I'll give some thought to installing Version 7
again - this time with my eyes wide open.

I am really very cross with Mr. Simon Orde and his company at the moment.
With everything else that is going on at present, I can well do without this
hassle.

With best wishes,

My mistake – it seems the only version I have in my Download folder is 1.3 dated 25 May. So in cleaning out my Beta install I have lost that updated V7 Plug-In.

Strange the latest version is not in my Download folder though.

Oh Well – I’ll be patient. Thanks for your help.

Yes, it is on my list to get approved but each one needs processing for the Plugin Store.

I’m surprised the beta Version 1.3.2 dated 21 Sep 2020 does not run as that is the one I will publish.

Hi David,

Checkout the FHUG Knowledge Base ~ Finding Where Records are Used

The most comprehensive method is the Where Used Record Links plugin.

Happily using FH7 and making good use of the Notes function and Shared Notes. However, having attached a Shared Note to 15 Source Records how on earth do I find the records this Note is attached to? I’ve checked the Help but can’t find anything. See the highlighted example. Even searching for the text in the Note only finds the Shared Note itself.

Re: Source Templates / Source Template Definitions

colevalleygirl@colevalleygirl.co.uk

Generally speaking, View > Other Records Lists > Source Templates. (The record list isn’t shown by default).

  1. Tools > Source Templates Definitions has a Compare/Synch with Source Template Record button – see the Help for more detail
  2. No. Sources already created don’t inherit any changes you make to the Source Template Records.
  3. Yes. On the All tab in the proport box for a  Source record, right click on the Name and Add Template. The fields will appear in the Main tab. (The old generic source fields can still be viewed on the All tab, so it’s fiddly switching between them to add data to the template. Another approach would be to write a plugin – but how useful that is depends on how well structured your existing sources are – and almost certainly your structure is different to everybody else’s so it can’t be handled by a generic plugin.

I am working through creating a Source Template Definition and adding it to the project as a Source Template that I can then generate a new Source based on the added Source Template. Where I'm struggling, after reading the documentation, is where I can edit the Source Templates added to the project - either deleting them or amending them. I cannot find the white Scroll icon referred to in the documentation. If I can only change the Template Definition then see Q1 below. My other questions on the same subject are:-
1. If I can only change a Template Definition, for example, the order of the fields I've defined or add a field, how do I apply these changes to the Source Template already added to the project generated from the original Source Definition ?
2. Once those changes have been made to the Template, will it automatically make those changes to any Sources already generated from the Source Template ?
3. Can I retrospectively apply a Source Template to Sources I already have pre FH V7 and then, obviously, add/amend the data in the Source ?

I feel I'm "missing" or cannot find a Source Template admin screen/box which would help me answer most of these questions.

Re: version 6 and version7

I started with an upgrade and noted that the version of the FH PDF printer was an old one.

I later uninstalled v6 and reinstalled v7 and I got a later version of the pdf printer.

Also if you upgrade be careful within any Plugins you may have installed on v6 as they may not work on v7 and could be dangerous.

The one thing that I would suggest to anyone doing the install is NOT to jump straight in but the read the “Notes on Upgrading to Version 7” from it points you to at the end of the install process

It may well have alleviated the problem that Marion had and meant that I changed the tack on several of the things that I had planned

I also kept all my old FH6 databases and copied the ones I wanted in the brand new folder for FH7

So it seems the best thing for me to do would be to purchase version 7 and install it on both my existing laptop and the new one (when it arrives!!!).

Would I have to uninstall version 6 before installing 7?      OR can I just install it and it will overwrite version 6.     Would there be any preference on which laptop to install first?
