What is the cost for upgrade?

Michael Pavesi

I have FH 6.2.7 in the US.  What is the upgrade cost in USD?

I can't recall exactly but think the free upgrade offer was for those who had just bought V6 it could have said something like those on V6 whether just bought or had an upgrade. That would have been clearer

When you clicked on the "upgrade" icon in the FH store, a page appears directing you to Free Upgrade Offers and asking you to input licence information in order to receive the discount.

Did you miss this or purchase by a different route?

Upgrading to V7 - nothing to be scared of

Jenny Cochrane

Following the long awaited launch of V7, there has inevitably been a deluge of questions and emails about the upgrade process and the new features. This forum is a great help.

However, many of the questions have already been dealt with on the FH site and in the knowledge base. Whilst I would never wish to deter anyone from asking for help, please folks, read what is readily available before criticising/complaining about the way the launch has been implemented and the new features. This is a big upgrade, particularly on sources and citations and will take us all some time to get up the learning curve.I spent a couple of hours today methodically reading the help notes and the Knowledge base and it's becoming clear that the FH7 offers some powerful new tools. I wish I'd had these facilities when I started out in V2! The "citations to source record" tool is very handy.

Where I think it will take time is for plugins and customisations to be ironed out and minor tweaks on report formats. The new menu layouts need learning, but I've been using V7 today - a bit slower than usual and a couple of frustrations but it's a real improvement. The record and focus windows have barely changed and I'm really looking forward to populating the "research notes" window - a much more efficient way of recording "to dos" in real time and not losing the bit of paper where I wrote that brilliant idea!

I'm looking forward to learning more about V7, Well don all at Calico Pie!

Jenny

Additional question on the same issue please. Is there a time limit on redeeming your free upgrade associated with buying V6 earlier this year?

Thank You,

Re: Upgrade to version 7

Don't know why you are getting the confusing pricing.

I upgraded no problem with the full price being £59.95, less a discount of £17.99 = £41.96.

It was quite clear on the FH website once I had input my product code and I was billed £41.96

Perhaps try again and see if the kink has been resolved.

Roy,

49.96 is the full price excluding VAT

59.95 is the full price including VAT

41.96 is the price after discount including VAT (30% of or 17.99)

David,

When you export from FH to TNG the Export Gedcom File plugin has the option to ‘flatten’ the exported Media folder and also has options to tell TNG to import certain Media to certain subfolders.

So you can have structured Media folders in FH and flatter Media folders in TNG if you wish.

David, this is the default TNG folder structure of media etc

which is a 'flat'  Media photo folder, with just the three sub folders, so keeping them as FH7 has imported your data should work without issue.
Best Regards, keep well, Merry Christmas

If you installed FH V7 over your existing FH V6 that custom tab should have been retained.”

Sorry Mike but not that straightforward.

The help file says:

Important Notes on Restoring Property Box Customizations

If you previously customized the Property Box, when you first look at Family Historian 7, your customizations will appear to have gone.  In fact they haven't gone.  They have just been temporarily suspended, and you can restore them.  They were suspended because version 7 introduces new features - such as greater control over field layout - which you may wish to make use of yourself; and also because some internal data storage changes may not be 100% compatible with previous customizations in all cases.  Consequently, if you do wish to restore your customizations, we recommend that you first look carefully at how some Property Box tabs now look, and decide if there are aspects of these that you wish to retain (such as Note fields that can now extend over a specified number of rows).  We also recommend that after restoration, you carefully check each restored Property Box tab, to make sure that it is working as expected.

Robert, in future please start a new posting for a new topic.

If you installed FH V7 over your existing FH V6 that custom tab should have been retained.

If not, I suspect you downloaded it from the FHUG KB Downloads.

So try https://fhug.org.uk/kb/download/associated-persons-3/

FH V7 has exactly the same custom tab feature for the Property Box as in FH V6.

In previous versions of FH I have had a tab in the property box for "Associated persons" This was very useful when for example finding a grandchild on a census when I did not know who the parents are.

Version 7 seems to have lost that functionality. Does anyone know how to customise the property box to restore that tab as I have found nothing in the "help" documents

Me too. There's one strange omission in the Narrative Reports (the ability to start a sentence with a new-paragraph) that is pretty much a show stopper for me, while I'd quite like to see other people's experiences of working with templated sources before I take the plunge - which I do intend to do.

I'm quite IT literate, I thought,

Thirty year career me, so it doesn't scare me....

I'm still working through the sources to get them consistent.  Maybe I shouldn't bother if the upgrade to 7 is going to change it all anyway.

So far as I understand it, v7 will give me the ability to be prompted to record source information to a greater level of detail, and more consistently than before, for each type of source (whatever I mean by that). For instance, a source type that I've just started using needs 2 dates recording. If I understand correctly, I will be able to set up a specific template for these sources that will enable me to be prompted to record both dates. But it can be my decision to make whether to create my own template, or to use one of the off the shelf styles and have to remember to record both dates.

I'm writing this to in effect say that I think that you're being sensible to think first. As for whether you should carry on trying to make your stuff consistent, I've no certainty. I don't know myself! One area that you might profitably look at - and this is a bit of a guess - is whether you can easily tell from your current source records, whether your source was the real thing, an image of it, a transcript, a summary or an index. Because those might be important in setting up the new data. Hmm. I think I've just given myself a job, never mind you!

As I said, I'm just trying to help people to think. (Which helps me as well!)

When you first load a V6 project into V7 the data is converted to a new structure.  All your V6 data is safely retained, but you can't then open the same file in V6 again because the data would become corrupted.  So the answer to the 'vice versa' part of your question is NO, I'm afraid.

No – FH6 Gedcom files are different to FH7 ones – swapping the same file between the two versions will be a recipe for disaster.
