Re: Alternative Ancestors
Hi Neill, FH only offers the embed option to be compatible with the GEDCOM 5.5 specification. Nowadays, no products use that feature and always have media files separate from the GEDCOM file.
Online trees such as at Ancestry, FindMyPast, MyHeritage, ZoomPast, etc, do not allow bulk uploading or downloading of files linked to a GEDCOM file. There are workarounds in some cases as explained in the FHUG Knowledge Base.
For importing downloads from other products see Importing to Family Historian: https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian
For exporting from FH to other products see the Export Gedcom File Plugin: https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=plugins:help:export_gedcom_file:export_gedcom_file Review its Output Formats for products that interest you: https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=plugins:help:export_gedcom_file:output_formats
You will discover that each product has its own interpretation of GEDCOM with its own variants. The above guides explain how to cope with those variations. The core features of GEDCOM are usually OK but some details leave something to be desired.

Hi Mike,
Brilliant thank you
While you are on Do you know why FH software gives the option to embed photos/documents in to a Gedcom file for export but online sites will not accept the imported file They appear to only accept Gedcom file where the photo/documents are links. Also I cannot see any Photo’s after the Gedcom file has been uploaded using the link option Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Can I view a family as shown in a Census? (ex TMG user)
Rob, If you have not run the plugin and requested changes, then it does not affect your Project database. Any improvement is purely coincidental. Maybe you just discovered how to use some FH features. It is still highly recommended that you follow the advice and convert to GEDCOM standard CENS facts. However, this is best discussed in the FHUG Forums. Mike Tate

Mike, After reading your email of 1 Sep 2020, 10:07 I think I now understand how my TMG census event structure doesn’t match the way FH works. I followed the fhug link you gave me https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:import_from_tmg. From there, under Import Discussions, I followed the link to Census details import to Family Historian 5 from TMG April 2014 ~ Witness and UK Census problems This was your reply to another ex-TMG FH newcomer who had a similar problem to mine. In this document, you explained that my census event tags used the EVEN tag whereas FH uses CENS and suggested using your Change Any Fact FH Plugin to change them. I downloaded this and Lo and Behold all my “missing” census people instantly appeared. I don’t understand how this happened without my having to request action from the Plugin, but I am very pleased with the result. Maybe you could enlighten me on how the Plugin works? I’m interested to know. Thanks again, Rob

You could also look at a third party product like Gedsite for generating websites with ‘Place’ and ‘Media’ pages.

Re: Places or media page possible?
Hi Mark, I guess it depends on what you mean by “is it possible”? Yes, it is possible, but it is not a feature built into the FH Publish > Create a Website wizard. You would have to write a Plugin to compose the HTML pages and merge them into the FH generated pages.
The ‘Improve Website or CD DVD HTML’ plugin performs similar tricks adjusting the FH generated pages.
See the FHUG Knowledge Base on Make a Family Tree CD/DVD or Website for ideas: https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:make_family_tree

Places or media page possible?
Mark Lewis <marklewis56@...>
Hello, I've been 'testing' the output to HTML for a site
I wondered if it was possible to have a 'places' page as well as individuals. I'm trying to focus on places as a kind of framework for looking into the family. The statistics page knows how many media there are, but is it possible to have a media page? Thanks,

Simply opening, looking at and closing the hint will leave it at pending in both scenarios.

Re: User Defined Fields In Custom Fact
Hi Chris, No, it is not possible to create custom user-defined fields in any type of fact. The FHUG Knowledge Base it explains all about ‘Custom Fact Fields’ at:
However, in the case of the ‘1939 UK Register’ it should really be handled the same as a Census event. The Date of Birth, Condition and Occupation should be recorded in the Source Citation just like a Census. Then separate Birth and Occupation and Census facts should invoke that Source Citation.
It is also advisable to use the standard Census event for the ‘1939 UK Register’ as it is virtually the 1941 Census with a few tweaks. The FHGU Knowledge Base explains all about ‘Family Historian Census Event for UK 1939 Register’ at: That includes adjusting the narrative sentence so it says ‘1939 register’ instead of ‘census’.
There are many benefits in using the Census event instead of a custom fact as explained above.
If anything is not clear after reading those articles then please ask again.

Is it possible to create user defined fields in a Custom Fact rather than just ticking some or all of the 5 fields required? As an example, I have created a custom fact for the 1939 UK Register and would like to have fields for Date of Birth, Condition and Occupation rather than having them in the NOTES field. If this is possible is it also possible to add fields to a Standard Fact?

Re: Diagram Spouse Display Options
Ken
Mike,
Thanks for replying.
To put it simply, it would be nice if each individual in a diagram had
their own spouse option, rather than one option for the whole diagram. But I
realise that this would entail substantial changes to the program.
However, as you suggest, I think I can achieve what I want with some
judicious Moving and Hiding.
Thanks again

You either have to use the external browser, or
“Use Internet > Search the Internet..., select MyHeritage SuperSearch, click Go To Site, and Log in to MyHeritage.

Re: Media Links
What we have forgotten to mention is the Media records that are imported from the FindMyPast GEDCOM include URL web links to the online media files, but FH does not support such web links and requires local PC based media files that you must download from FindMyPast. The explanation is that those web links are conditional on your subscription to FindMyPast and they cannot be shared around as that would infringe copyright. You can upload the GEDCOM file back to your FindMyPast account and the web links will then work online. But importing that GEDCOM file to FH is a different scenario.

Re: Media Links
Welcome Sue, Yes, the general rule is that migrating GEDCOM to & from online trees such as FindMyPast does NOT include the Media. Also, the ‘hints’ do not add anything automatically even if you Review and Accept them. As a newcomer, I would strongly recommend you spend time discovering how Family Historian works. Start with the Help guides and tutorials, etc. Please join the FHUG website at https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/ which is free and has a Knowledge Base of guides. They include specific advice for importing and handling media, plus lots more… The Forums allow screenshots that can be very helpful.

It's not possible to get media down from FMP in that way so you need to download the media using the download option and them add it in.
