Re: Problems with OneDrive replication

Jane Taubman

I don't use one drive,  but I suspect it's similar to Dropbox.

Conflict files are created when you save the file back to the disk on both computers with out replicating.

The first thing to ensure that you NEVER leave Family Historian open in a Project when working on the other computer and if you have been working away on your laptop that you ensure it and your Desktop has finished replicating BEFORE opening the file on the either computer.

Remember Family Historian stores the data in memory when working and saves it back to the disk either via Autosave or when you save manually.  Cache files are constantly updated.

If you are not sure if there are any changes you have missed you can always merge compare the conflict files, before deleting them.

Problems with OneDrive replication

john@...

A few months ago I decided to move the Family Historian Project files on my desktop PC (A Chillblast running Windows 10)  to OneDrive so that I could also see and work on them on my laptop (Windows 10). I elected to also keep a copy of the files on both the PC and laptop so that I could use them even if the internet was down. The move appeared to go well but the replication seemed to come to a halt although we have a reasonably fast internet connection (30 Mbps). When I looked at the files, the problem may have to do with the creation by OneDrive of multiple copies of the Projects (accompanied by a message like, "We couldn't update/replicate your file so we have made a new copy of it"). Also there seem to be many copies of the FindMyPast and MyHeritage Hints as well as many copies of Snapshots whatever they are.
The following five snips of the file structure on my desktop illustrate the problem.

A) The Projects File.  The "copy Feb 2020" is a copy I made to update my Guild of One-name Studies website.

B) The Bradburn One-name Study File, showing the two extra copies created by OneDrive; -Chillblast and -Chillblast-2.

C) The One-name Study.fh_data file showing again the two extra complete copies which were automatically created.

D1) The cache data showing multiple copies of the FMP and MyHeritage hints. These hints presumably change each day and confuse the replication process.

D2) The Snapshot data which has now grown to 17 files each of 5MB.

Can anyone tell me how I can stop the production by OneDrive of more duplicates (especially the duplicates of the main GEDCOM file)  and then which of the many files is it safe to delete?

Thanks for any help, John Bradburn.

Blue Griffon is an html editor,  so just google for wrap text in html.

This list is not the place to ask about non Family Historian Products if you want to ask questions about off topic subjects try the General forum on FHUG.

Re: Media for facts problems

James,

The Show Media for Fact dialogue has two tick options for Include Citation Media and Include Source Record Media.

Untick those one at a time to discover where the Media is attached.

If the Media is still shown afterwards then it is actually attached to the Fact.

Otherwise it is actually attached to the Citation or the Source Record, so use the Show Media for Citation in the yellow Sources For pane.

Rather than Unlink/Delete it use the Edit button and tick Exclude from Reports.

In the 'Media for Fact' window, do you have 'Include Source Record' Media ticked?   What you describe suggests that you have the media linked to a Source for the fact, rather than linked direct to the fact.   If you go to the Source record you should be able to edit or unlink the media there.

Blue griffin is about as simple as they get.   Word is dreadful,  but you can use it of you really want to just save the page as html.

I assume you can use Word to do that work but that you have to use a web editor to convert it to a web page. Having looked at Blue Griffin I don't think I have the technical expertise to know where to start. Is there a simpler web editor available?

That's great, thank you. I wonder how long it would have taken for me to find that!

Re: How to deal with an engagement when the couple never marry

Yes, this is related to my earlier reply to be aware of the lack of support for some features.

Using the Family partnership and Engagement Event is well supported in FH Diagrams and Reports.

Fact Witnesses are only supported in Narrative Reports although FH V7 due this year is reputed to support them in all Reports.

Associated Person cannot easily be added to Narrative Reports because they do not involve a Fact that has a Sentence Template.

So the solution is to create an Associated Person custom fact and in its Sentence Template refer to the Associated Person link.

Alternatively, forget about the Associated Person, created a custom Engagement individual fact with a Fact Witness for the other person, and then they will appear in Narrative Reports.

Great new info - the Add Miscellaneous right click in the All tab. However I can only get that info to print using Publish/record detail reports/record details - individuals. I can’t get it to print on individual narrative report.

Once Associated you can add the relationship detail in the next field down in the All Tab under Associated Person.

Note, that if in the all tab you click on the name of the associate you get taken to their property box; there you will observe that the association is "one-way". If necessary you have to create an associated person back the other way.

Yes, the problem with the Associated person link is that it appears in very, very few places. I have it set to appear on a custom tab on the individual's property box, and have it in a text scheme for my diagrams but that's about it. This very thing was mentioned in the FH User Group recently and I don't think that I've missed anything significant.

Re: How to deal with an engagement when the couple never marry

Because it's so obscure, Associated Person isn't in the normal user
interface. You have to bring up the property box for the individual,
click the All tab, right click the person's name (i.e. the top of
their tree of data) then choose Add Miscellaneous / Add Associated
Person and then add a link to an existing person or create a new one
with a link. (So this isn't an event or attribute as such)

There are several really obscure GEDCOM items that can only be added
in this way - via the All Tab. I actually added a new / custom tab to
the Individual's property box specifically devoted to Associated
person and a couple of other odd items. NB - adding the association
link from A to B doesn't add a link from B to A. Might seem a pain but
there are cases where the naming on the link is different depending on
the direction.

Just be aware that Fact Witnesses are a non-standard GEDCOM feature and not supported by many other products.

Alternatively, Associated Person although a standard GEDCOM feature, is still not well supported by other products.

Using the Family relationship and Engagement Event are standard GEDCOM features and universally supported.

So if exporting to other products such as Ancestry, FindMyPast, TNG, etc, then bear those options in mind.

Thank you, using the witness field to link two people seems like a good work around to connect two people who aren't a couple. It could be used for a number of things.
