Re: How to deal with an engagement when the couple never marry

Thank you, using the witness field to link two people seems like a good work around to connect two people who aren't a couple. It could be used for a number of things.

Re: How to deal with an engagement when the couple never marry
uhkh3tsccmz9@beconfidential.com
Part of the problem is that broken-engagement "couples" show as a "couple" in diagrams (albeit with the link line double dashed rather than double lined). Where people live together this is probably OK (mark as "Unmarried couple"), but where someone was jilted (or the engagement was mutually ended) it sometimes seems strange for the "couple" to appear as such in diagrams.
I suppose it depends whether you want the couple to show as a couple (especially if there are children) - in which case create a "spouse"* but mark them as "never married" - and add an engagement fact for the couple (if possible with from-to dates) to make clear the reason for the never married clear. * I think many genealogy programs have historically tended to show anyone who shares couple facts as a "spouse". The alternative is to create a custom fact for "Engagement (single)" where you add the temporary fiancé as a witness to the fact. The fiancé as a witness can be just a "name" or can be a link to someone else in the file.

Re: Fact Sentence Template truncated
No Evelyn, Sentence Templates are nothing whatever to do with GEDCOM. They are customisations entirely local to each product, and for FH are NOT saved in its GEDCOM data file. Possibly, some products can understand each others Sentence Templates and read each others databases, but that does not involve GEDCOM.
The Export Gedcom File Plugin does include FH Sentence Templates in its GEDCOM file for use by GedSite, but that uses a special non-standard extension privately agreed between us. Other products may do likewise. But that is all external to FH, and Graham’s problem is internal to FH.

Mike Is this a Gedcom limit? I think I came across the problem and limitation in a previous software I used. Evelyn Wilcock -----Original Message----- Graham . . . It seems that when saved each Fact Sentence Template is limited to 1,000 characters, so the Template gets truncated at the end. That limitation should be reported to Calico Pie as soon as possible and they might fix it before Version 7 is released.

"Just set the "status" on the main tab of the Property box as either "Unmarried couple" or "Never Married""
Thank you, so simple when you know!

I haven’t got access to FH at the moment, but if you still want to show that the couple got engaged I think that there is an ‘Engaged’ fact.

How to deal with an engagement when the couple never marry
simon pugh <polydorus1@...>
I am using the trial version of Family historian and have imported a Master Genealogist database.
I have an woman who was engaged to a man, but she jilted him and married someone else. The engagement has been imported but then the man automatically becomes a spouse when there is no marriage record. I am unclear how to deal with this except by removing the engagement and putting it in as note.

Re: Fact Sentence Template truncated
Graham, The point to remember is that most customisations apply globally to all Projects, so switching Projects retains the Fact Sentence Templates within FH local memory. It is only when you close FH that customisation settings get saved externally, in this case to the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Fact Types\ folder. It seems that when saved each Fact Sentence Template is limited to 1,000 characters, so the Template gets truncated at the end. That limitation should be reported to Calico Pie as soon as possible and they might fix it before Version 7 is released. In the meantime you will just have to work within that limit. Fact Sentance Template truncated
Graham Conner
I want to build a Fact sentence template in FH 6.2.7 like this:
The {date:YEAR} {label} for {=CombineText("at ",TextPart(%FACT.ADDR%,1,5,Tidy),,CombineText("in ",TextPart(%FACT.PLAC%,1,5,Tidy),,))} recorded the head of the household as {role(single)=Head of Household}. <His spouse was {role=Wife}. ><Her spouse was {role=Husband}.><The Children were {role=Son,Daughter,Stepson,Stepdaughter,Son-in-law,Daughter-in-law}. ><Other family members were {role=Father,Mother,Father-in-law,Mother-in-law,Stepfather,Stepmother,Brother,Sister,Brother-in-law,Sister-in-law,Grandfather,Grandmother,Grandfather of Wife,Grandmother of Wife,Grandfather of Husband,Grandmother of Husband,Grandson, Granddaughter,Grandson of Wife,Granddaughter of Wife,Grandson of Husband,Granddaughter of Husband,Uncle,Aunte,Nephew,Niece,Adopted Son,Adopted Daughter, Fostered Son, Fostered Daughter}.><The Servants were {role=Assistant,Servant,Housekeeper,Butler,Groom,Nurse}. ><Others living there were {role=Lodger,Boarder,Resident,Pupil,Student,Patient,Inmate}. >< Visitors at the time of census were {role=Visitor}. ><<para>Note: {=TextPart(%FACT.ADDR%,7,1)}><{note}> This works OK at first. If I save the project, close the project and reopen the project it will appear the same, no problem. However, If I save the project, close the project, and exit from FH completely, restart FH and open the project I end up with this: The {date:YEAR} {label} for {=CombineText("at ",TextPart(%FACT.ADDR%,1,5,Tidy),,CombineText("in ",TextPart(%FACT.PLAC%,1,5,Tidy),,))} recorded the head of the household as {role(single)=Head of Household}. >< Visitors at the time of cen Which no longer works as intended. It looks like the problem is to do with loading the data initially, not what can be held while FH6 is running. Can this be fixed? Regards, Graham

> Hello. As you can do in reports, is it possible to remove birth details from persons flagged as living from trees and charts? Yes. Clone your preferred text scheme in Diagram>Options then edit the lines you want to hide for living people and tick the "Flag Condition" select "Living" in the drop down select "Not Set"

Re: Add GRO Source

Personally I don't attach media to GRO Indexes, so the plugin is not designed to work with them, but that looks OK. Although "Add GRO Source" I thought put everything in one line.

Sorry. I meant limitations to websites created within the genealogy software.
But Jane is expert and if she says you can do what you want with fh that is fine.
Apologies. I was only suggesting a way of doing what you want if it cant be accomplished in fh.

Re: Creating your own website
Jane Taubman
You can see a variety of Websites from Family Historian users here You can add any "manually" written pages to the table of contents page in the page wizard, if you generate the site and then copy the index page to a new page you can use an editor like Blue Griffon to change the content. Alternately you can add Individual narrative reports to the table of contents for the more interesting people. Don't forget you can add notes to every fact and customise the sentences to give the automatic reports a better flow.

Re: Creating your own website
Evelyn and Christopher Wilcock <eandcw@...>
It is preferable to post any questions on the FHUG forum.
There are limitations to trees created within genealogy software.
I create my site using Gedsite which one has to buy but gives enormous flexibility for added pages. I upload a basic tree but the title page for most of my trees has text and photo created in the software. And you can add pics and documents for any person.
