well Mike, it looks like all the projects are in one place, but I didn't manage to copy over the FH sample project,
where do we go from here?, can I now delete the backup files and start to save them again as I go on,

Hi John

A manager I used to work for many years ago always told us to ask whatever questions that we wanted, and that the only daft question was the one that you didn't ask :-)

Re: Working with Lists

Super quick responses as usual, thanks everyone. Dragging the dividing line has cracked it. The strange thing is that I had tried this using my mouse pad on the laptop and it refused to budge. Having read your advice I dug out a good old fashioned external mouse, pugged it in and hey presto!

thanks again until the next "daft laddie" question!

What I do is prompt the view button on the top. That opens a menu from which I prompt record lists which opens another menu from this I prompt individuals which lists the surnames I am looking for

May be I have misunderstood what you were looking for

You have the same issue that I had when I went to check
When you click the link and the right edge shifts you should notice that there is an extra wide line on the right
If you move over this it should change into the symbol (like a divide sign on its side) that enables you to expand and contract sub-windows
Click the left mouse button when it is there and drag to the left – your pane should appear

When I go Records Window > Lists menu > Named Lists Pane, the Named Lists Pane appears to the right of the Records Window. The division between the two is draggable, so I am thinking that your division has got dragged to the right edge of your monitor?

Hi Mike although I have had this family-historian for over a year, I must admit I have not learned to use it properly, so hopefully with your help I can get on the right track, in answer to your questions,

1. I did not realize I had changed the project location,

2. I would like the project to be in the FH project folder

3. I don't need them to be on my desktop

4. I would like all the projects and the three gedcoms to become one project,

I am sure once we have sorted this out I will find it much easier to use.

thank you for your help,

The reason I sometimes prefer Icons is that with a large tree on screen (and with failing eyesight!!), it's easier to see at a glance which individuals have certain facts recorded for them. I do use coloured text to distinguish different facts in diagram boxes but there are only so many distinct colours available and I can never remember which fact has which colour.

When I started using Icons, I had to keep setting Flags but later versions of FH allowed Expressions (or when I learned how to use
Expressions!!) I generally find that's a better way (slightly smaller Gedcom files as Flag tags are no longer needed in the Gedcom file and the Icons appear automatically once the data has been entered).

At the moment (and for this specific local research project), I'm only recording Sir or Lady but, if needed, I'd simply create a different Icon and add the relevant expression. On that, is there any limit on how many Expressions one can use in Diagram - Boxes ?? (the most I have at the moment are 8 levels of priority).

Yes, using the Name – Prefix box, as well as the Title attribute, will work OK.

It all depends where you want thosePrefixtitles to appear onthescreen, in Reports, on Diagrams, etc.

Prefix does not appear in the Focus Window

Prefixcan be added to the Property Box Caption by using%INDI.NAME:ADORNED_FULL%

Prefix does appear in Reports by default.

Prefix does not appear in Diagrams by default but can easily be added to the Name by using%INDI.NAME:ADORNED_FULL%

Hello all

I'm doing some research into several local people that are either a Sir or Lady (Dame) and, as I'm creating mini-trees, I wondered how best to record their titles in FH.

The 2 options I can immediately see are to use "Name - Prefix" or the separate "Title" attribute.  I suppose the advantage of the latter is that I can add a date when they were awarded the honour but it's not immediately associated with what they are called.

I'm not worried (at this stage) about any "sentences" that FH would generate in reports as I just want to record the basic facts.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on best practice.

Many thanks

Brian

That reveals two things.

  1. You have other genuine Projects not mentioned before that maybe need a Media review
  2. You have changed the default Project Location to C:\Users\shay\Desktop\Shays Tree

Is there any particular reason why you changed the Project Location?

Would you prefer all your Projects to be located in the default C:\Users\Documents\Family Historian Projects folder?

OR do you really want them kept where they are on the Desktop?

Do you want ALL those four genuine Projects and the three freestanding GEDCOM to become just one composite Project?

Please answer ALL FOUR of the above questions.
