I did once see an entry in an old PR where details had been filled out but there were no signatures.  The clergyman had helpfully added an explanation to the effect that "it having been made known to me that the man hath a wife living, the ceremony did not proceed".  So someone really did say something when asked "if anyone knows of any lawful reason..... speak now or forever hold thy peace".
