[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #825 Hebrew is not supported
By omeritzics:

Hello, thank you for your hard work and for adding Hebrew! Hebrew works good, but it still needs improvements. For example, the word דוגמה (sounds like "doog-ma") sounds like "Thm".

Edit: The letter Da-let (ד) sounds like "th", while this consonant doesn't exist in Hebrew. As Hebrew uses an ABJAD writing system, Espeak-NG should learn when to pronounce vowels and when to not, because it does not read words with vowels when the vowel diacritic (Niqqud). Espeak-NG also should support Daggesh. The letter He (ה) sounds like the letter H, while Espeaker-NG reads it like '.

[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #131 Voice flutters and makes a buzzing sound when rate is set to 100% in NVDA
By jaacoppi:

commit aa626828 is supposed to handle the language option "fast_test2" used by variant voices/!v/fast.

I'm not familiar with the details of rate boost. I usually listen with moderate speeds. My impression is that the language option fast_test2 is unnecessary because the speed argument (-s) should be enough.

1 New Commit:

[espeak-ng:master] By Juho Hiltunen <jaacoppi@...>:
eae0665be59a: code cleanup: move voices->width in LoadVoice()

It's probably unnecessary code and could be removed. However, it would
break tests. This is a temporary solution.

The solution is to do it once in VoiceReset() and then if the "formant"
keyword changes voice->width.

The rules for pronouncing a letter are in dictsource/he_rules. See docs/dictionary.md for documentation.

Without knowing any Hebrew, it looks like either "ו" is set incorrectly to "v" or the rule for "דו" is missing.

[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #131 Voice flutters and makes a buzzing sound when rate is set to 100% in NVDA
By alex19EP:

If the problem is in espeak-ng then it's a regression and we will fix it.

if it is a regression, then it happened much earlier than aa62682 i think in 065a0e8

Can you do a git bisect to check which commit causes this? My guess is aa62682.

I'm not sure if we need to do bisect. my question is, is it really necessary to activate sonic at 450 and not 451?

Also, would be great if you can figure out a test to see if sonic activates at 450 or not.

I don't know how to check this programmatically, but it is very noticeable by ear.

There is nothing wrong with eSpeak NG. It uses ISO 639-1 or ISO 639-3 codes for languages, but some MBROLA voices do not follow these standards. hr is code for Croatian and he is for Hebrew. If eSpeak NG would have configuration files created for MBROLA voices (see my comment earlier), name for them would be mb-hr1 or mb-hr2.

What I know is that there is something wrong... If you being a developer does not know... So, who knows? Is my versions of espek-ng in debian and archlinux the right one? If so, should this versions have "he" - Hebrew support on it? If so, why I do not see this when I install espeak-ng in both systems?

Read through the posts in this thread. For Hebrew support, you'll need 1.51-dev. Hebrew support has been added after version 1.50. Version 1.51 hasn't been released yet. That's why it's called 1.51-dev.

I do not know which versions Debian or Arch linux have. If you want them to have the latest version (1.51-dev from git), ask them to include it. The other option is to build from source. The instructions are in https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/blob/master/docs/building.md

Second question, why do all other languages know the Hebrew alphabet? It's because espeak-ng is programmed to spell out the letters of unknown alphabets one by one. It doesn't matter if the writing is in Hebrew, Telugu, Chinese, Greek or any other supported language. Espeak-ng recognises that this script is not native to this language. Note that this is a different discussion for a different thread.

@OrionRandD, please read carefully, what I already wrote in previous comment:

hr is code for Croatian and he is for Hebrew of natively synthesized eSpeak NG voices.

If you use different voice, which doesn't have defined pronunciation of characters for other language, it is nothing wrong, if spells unicode names for these characters. You can get the same behaviour, if you use English, Latvian or other language instead of Hebrew e.g.:

espeak-ng -ven "דוגמה" -X
espeak-ng -vlv "דוגמה" -X

I pushed this as https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/commit/5d97c58b69fe3ae5e733f6aaf7c27c3d308b47f7.

Remember that the _list file is meant to contain exceptions to the _rules file. Try to make as many general rules as possible.

_list files are good for conjunctions, adverbs and abbreviations that require different stress settings. Take a look at https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/blob/master/dictsource/en_list for a good example.

#994 Allow several pipe delimited hash values for Klatt tests

As ignoring tests is not good and we may get uncaught regressions, I made this workaround for Klatt voice tests. It allows to set several hash values for different environments and now it works for on my laptop and server for online test site. Klatt4 voice is commented out, as it seems to generate different hash almost all the time. Please merge, if it seems working (probably with more variants of hashes added) for you too.

#996 Mac: espeak-ng` occasionally hangs

M1 Mac, MacOS Big Sur Built espeak-ng from source: eSpeak NG text-to-speech: 1.51-dev Data at: /usr/local/share/espeak-ng-data

When using espeak-ng both on the command line and as a linked library, there's occasionally no output. When invoking via command line (espeak-ng hello), the executable hangs indefinitely.

There doesn't appear to be any pattern to when it will succeed or fail, but when invoking in C code via the library, espeak-ng will work throughout the run of the program as long as it works at all.

When building, I need to manually run git log > ChangeLog to run autogen.sh, which isn't possible when installing with brew.

Unlike #982 I am able to build locally and get speech synthesis, but #12 may be related
