[espeak-ng:master] new issue: Words with alternative pronunciation #github

[espeak-ng:master] New Issue Created by nmstoker:
#636 Words with alternative pronunciation

I see that there is handling in place in the language list files for some heteronyms (ie words with alternative pronunciation), but is there a simple way to override this or provide a hint to the system?

From what I can see the main method of distinguishing which pronunciation to use is the POS but that isn't going to work reliably in all cases, eg wind. With wind, the common cases are wind rhyming with "binned" is the noun and wind rhyming with bind is the verb. But this fails for instance with "to wind a baby" (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/wind)

Obviously it would be ideal if espeak-ng could figure it out itself but that seems a tall order given the need to rely on broader context, so a hinting approach would be useful.

#586 Fix for newer versions of emscripten

This is a fix in order to compile the emscripten demo with recent versions of emscripten.

The default behaviour of emscripten is now to compile with WASM option, generating a different data file and forcing async loading. For now, I propose to just stay the closest as possible to what was done before and keep a sync loading by just using WASM=0.

File System function import in the module has also become an option in emscripten, and we absolutely need it, so the flag should be passed explicitly : FORCE_FILESYSTEM=1

The Runtime functions are now imported directly without scoping the Runtime module: updated accordingly.

That's all for the changes.

#639 the ability to read .epub files to .wav?

hi there, would it be possable to have it so espeak-ng is able to read .epub files? when I type for example espeak-ng -f "test.epub" it does not read the contence of the file. it just says pk. using latest espeak-ng the file in question does not have any protection on it. I have attached it if you wish to try for yourself. thanks, Majid Hussain Accidents Happen.zip

epub files are zip files with various included structural files, as well as actual content.  Generally, the content is just standard html (or xml files in some cases) that contain the actual content..You'll need an epub reader to read these files.  Failing that, you can always unzip the epub file, and use your web browser to view the content.  That's exactly what I do here, and it's always worked for me.  Of course, this won't work if your epub file has encryption (in other words, DRM protection) on it, but for unprotected standard epub files, this works just fine.  There's no reason espeak should be able to read these files directly.

[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #617 Generating speech from phonemes? / Phoneme representation specification
By rory:

Is there a specification or documentation of this phoneme representation or a table listing all characters? The representations in docs/phoneme_model.md and docs/phonemes.md don't look like the example above.

As far as I know eSpeak uses the "usenet"/Kirshenbaum/IPA ASCII format ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirshenbaum ). Wikipedia has a table. lexconvert can convert from unicode IPA to this format.

hi there, i'm running arch linux with latest espeak-ng from the archlinux repos. would it be possible to hav the wpm increesed from 390 wpm? to say 600 wpm? currently when I output audio to a wav file the limit I believe is 390 wpm and was curious if it could be increesed? thanks, Majid Hussain

I don't know about linux, but on windows, I have to run the voices at 99 percent, because at 100 percent, it breaks up too much to be useful.  It'd sure be nice if it could be increased some, but unless the issue with speech breaking up, I can't see how increasing the speed will do anybody any good.

By valdisvi:

To speed up speech more than it is supported directly, eSpeak NG uses sonic library. In on-line test site you can choose up to 1000WPM (or pass your own speed parameters in URL). To use sonic library, eSpeak NG should be compiled and built with this library included (and I don't know how it is compiled for Arch). See more at building on Linux, Mac, BSD.

Use cainteoir.
It can "record" to .wav files.
It also can play the epub file.
This is not an espeak-ng issue at all.

#641 Questions about espeak-ng

Hi. I'm Fedora 30 X 64 bit Cinnamon edition users. I'm very beginner with TTS engine on Linux though I'm now about near 4 years Linuxer.

I have difficulties with espeak-ng ......

1) is ther a GUI available for configuration of espeak-ng ? This can solve great deal of problem.

2) currently the voice is of low quality & I like to change voice. In /usr/share/espeak-ng-data/voices there are 2 folders: mb & !v I think that mb is voices while !v is for variants, isn't it ? How can I test those ? I like to test them before set one of them as default .....

3) how can I change default voice to what I prefer ?

3) it seem that all installed voices on my Fedora are of low quality. I'm not sure they are such or they just need to correct their parameters ?

4) if all voices of same quality & can not improved by changing their parameters, then where can I get high quality voices for espeak-ng ?

[espeak-ng:master] New Issue Created by The1Freeman:
#642 The german voice reads german words in some cases in english

Using the development version of eSpeak under odo.lv, eSpeak will pronounce german words in english, if they contain a english word within them.

For example, "Besucherguides" and "Spezialhardware" are read in english, despite the fact that "Besucher" and "Spezial" are german words.
