[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #172 sluggish speech interruption
By rhdunn:

The dee3799 commit is intended to be used with the pcaudiolib fix in https://github.com/espeak-ng/pcaudiolib/commit/8a013933f66b58c18e94eae9108fd573467f792b. That is, the fix for the ALSA issue has been moved to pcaudiolib -- instead of calling snd_pcm_drop, it closes the device then opens a new device with the same parameters as the original.

That is why I asked about affected audio APIs (i.e. given that pulseaudio ).

@sthibaul The fix-cancel.txt patch only calls close/open in the my_stop_is_required if branch, not at the end of say_thread. My changes in both of the commits listed at the top were equivalent to the fix-cancel.txt patch with close/open_audio merged into a single cancel_audio function, and the close/open behaviour moved into the ALSA implementation of audio_object_flush.

I agree about fixing the places where the audio APIs are called to address the threading issues. I'll see what I can do.

[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #172 sluggish speech interruption
By sthibaul:

pulseaudio seems unaffected

About close_stream, actually I don't think it is actually useful that it is aggressive with dropping. AIUI, this is called from say_thread when the engine is idle, in which case it can release the audio device. But that doesn't mean it should stop what was currently being spoken. It happens that the idle detection will probably be long enough that the current speech will have finished by the time idleness is detected. But on the principle, it's useless and could even be harmful, if the idleness timeout was set very small, all speeches would then be truncated to the time when idleness is detected.

I see that your commit only adds cancel_audio in close_stream. That's not enough, we need to add it to the end of say_thread, so that it's called as soon as we've gotten out of the Synthesize call.

Actually, this bug was triggered by 3ed0b5cd0fed4b2b557c248924f71afa810b3609 which explicitely replaced closing the device with only flushing the audio, without knowing about the ALSA issue.

And then I get to your last point: I agree that espeak_ng_Cancel should probably not do pcaudiolib calls itself for thread safety issues. That should be done by say_thread at the end of its loop, as my proposed patch does.

dd422ffbdb63: Ensure phoneme type is set before start/endtype. The eSpeak code uses `end_type` for the `voicingswitch` property when used with consonants. It also allows `endtype` to be specified in consonants if it is the same as `starttype`. This code adds a check in the `starttype` and `endtype` handlers to ensure that the phoneme type has been set to preserve the eSpeak behaviour for these properties.

it seems the only working version for windows is espeak 1.48.15.

or is it just me who has this problem?

[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #96 Ordinal number suffixes and their incorrect number prefixes mix to produce unexpected behavior
By rhdunn:

This is due to the way espeak handles ordinals. It splits them into the number and (st|nd|rd|th) part. That is, the 1 in 1st is pronounced as fir. The way I would like to implement this in espeak-ng is to use the words for the ordinals. That is, 1st should map to the word first, not f'3:st.

The motivation behind this is to make it easier to support accent variations and to be consistent across the numeric version and the version using words (e.g. 14 and fourteen).

The question is how to handle things like 3st. My thinking is to use:

Word Pronunciation
3rd third
3st three s t
3 st three stone

with the last one being handled by the $units marker proposed in issue #115.
