Great. Thanks for doing this.

Seems we don't get voice variants in the msi installer.
We also seem to lack documentation.
I ask myself if it is a good idea to continue with msi installers when
the creation and keeping them up to date of such ones is pretty complex?
What do you think?
MSI is the standard Windows installer format (like deb files on Debian/Ubuntu). While they are a pain to manage, they provide features such as the ability to upgrade, repair, and uninstall. This includes updating the registry and ensuring that dependencies within the installer are installed based on the features the user selects. This is done by keeping the GUIDs the same for each item.

I would like to update the MSI to better reflect the current state (e.g. new voices) before release. I haven't had time to do this yet, but patches are welcome.

Longer term, we can look at better ways to manage the process. Something like having the GUIDs in the language/voice file with the ability to generate the voice data part of the installer XML source. This could then be made so that the tests can check that GUIDs are present and valid, so the regression tests will fail if any are missing/wrong.

Regarding SAPI support: There is an experimental version commented out for English. It has a few bugs and is not complete.

Kind regards,
Reece

Simon

[espeak-ng:master] reported: ja: missing kanji reading #github

espeak-ng@groups.io Integration <espeak-ng@...>

[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #366 ja: missing kanji reading
By jamesohortle:

As mentioned in #498, Japanese does not currently support readings for English words mixed into Japanese text (it will read letter by letter). It is fairly common in Japanese, however, to have English vocabulary sprinkled throughout. See, for example, the Yomiuri Giants' website where many section titles are in English.

I have been working on a dictionary of English words written as they would be written/pronounced in Japanese. Sample:

Although there are some errors (JOHN'S should really be ジョンズ, for example), I am happy to contribute the resource if given some guidance on how to put it in.

[espeak-ng:master] new issue: eSpeak-NG produces slurred speech under certain conditions #github

espeak-ng@groups.io Integration <espeak-ng@...>

[espeak-ng:master] New Issue Created by The1Freeman:
#671 eSpeak-NG produces slurred speech under certain conditions

eSpeak-NG will produce slurred speech when placing a [[_^_JA custom pronounciation]] tag somewhere in a text. (I don't know if this affects other languages, so this is the first instance in where it produces such weird output).

This apparently happens when the sentence contains a comma, and somewhere in the next part of the text after the comma where that tag is set, it'll switch to a (presumably) different language while retaining the original voice (in this case I assume it uses the japanese phoneme set, which does not contain all of the phonemes english has).

Here's the text that's causing this problem: from wikipedia: According to director Imaishi, much of the plot is based on his observation that the Japanese manner of pronouncing "fascio" ( [[_^_JA p\as\o:]] fassho) is nearly the same as the word "fashion" ( [[_^_JA p\as\o:n]] fasshon), his observation that the pronunciation of the Japanese words "school uniform" ( [[_^_JA se:if_'ku]] seifuku) and "conquest" ( [[_^_JA se:if_'ku]] seifuku) are identical, and that the titular kiru may mean "kill" ( [[_^_JA k'iru]]), "to cut" ( [[_^_JA k'iru]]), or "to wear" ( [[_^_JA k'iru]]).`

You can work this around by placing [[_^_EN-US ]] after the comma, in which eSpeak-NG will read the text proper.

Edit: This happens with other languages. Switch the language code to any other from the tag and eSpeak will attempt to read it in said language (which will fail) Example text: A test for eSpeak, after the comma the text should be read in a weird way ( [[_^_DE p\as\o:]] fassho).
