[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #163 [French] cerf should be pronounced sεʁ and not sεʁf
By Shallowmallow:

Sorry I didn't answer you. 2. Can it be described as common rule for similar set of words?
Yes. In nerf you don't pronounce the "f". (serf is the exception where you pronounce the "f") But, for words that are shorts for other words, like "perf" for performance you pronounce the "f".

so, cerf and nerf, you don't pronounce te "f" in perf and serf , you do. I cannot thing of other words that end with "erf"

3 Shouldn't final f actually be pronounced as quiet h (e.g. espeak-ng -vfr "[[s'Erh.]]" I'm unable to tell you

I used words from LibreOffice spellcheck dictionary and Google Translate as example to check that cerf. entre-nerf. nerf. serf. are spelled more or less appropriately.

[espeak-ng:master] New Comment on Issue #186 Improve the Arabic support
By rhdunn:

The files should be kept as ar. When the language rules are properly fleshed out, they should be checked against Standard and Algerian Arabic. Differences should be handled in a similar way to how English dialects are handled. At that point, an arq voice (language) file can be added to enable the Algerian dialect.

Houcemeddine,

we have dedicated issue https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/issues/186 for Arabic language improvements and better will be if we will discuss it there. My question there was — do we need to change existing configuration files from ar to arq and introduce new set of files for ar? But will we have enough input from you to support both of these dialects?

[espeak-ng:master] New Issue Created by vrdhn:
#201 make clean ; make doesn't work.

Hi I'm unacquainted with autotools . I noticed that running make clean followed by make doesn't build, and generates the following messages:

: espeak-ng $ make src/libespeak-ng.la CCLD src/libespeak-ng.la gcc: error: src/libespeak-ng/.libs/src_libespeak_ng_la-compiledata.o: No such file or directory gcc: error: src/libespeak-ng/.libs/src_libespeak_ng_la-compiledict.o: No such file or directory gcc: error: src/libespeak-ng/.libs/src_libespeak_ng_la-compilembrola.o: No such file or directory ..... several more ....

In the generated Makefile, the dependencies are generated without the '/.libs' portion; Fixing this, or update the make clean would help immensely. For now, the workaround is git clean -dxf !

Some questions about eSpeak-ng and MBrola

Christo de Klerk

Hello all

I have been using MBrola with the old eSpeak for many years and would like to get it going under eSpeak-ng now I am using NVDA as my screen reader. I have looked at the eSpeak-ng documentation and I think I have copied all the necessary MBrola files into their correct places, but I can't get MBrola activated under NVDA. I select espeak-ng as my synthesiser, then I go to Voice preferences and I see mb-en1 listed there, in the list of voices, but it is the usual eSpeak-ng en voice that keeps talking. How do I get mb-en1 to talk?

Then another question. MBrola tools has this confirmation dialog that keeps popping up every first time it is run after a reboot. Has anyone found a way to get that out of the way? It causes havoc, as it pops up before there is any speech.

I see there is now a Windows installation of eSpeak-ng. Would it upset the old installation of eSpeak at all if one were to install eSpeak-ng? I don't want to break anything that ain't broke.

I see the eSpeak-ng documentation is in a .md format. What does one use to read .md files?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am new to espeak-ng and would like to get a grip on it. I have worked with the old eSpeak and have done dictionary development for many years.

Kind regards

Christo

Dear Sir,

I thank you for your answer. The problem is that Taha Zerrouki has applied Algerian Arabic (arq) phonology to Modern Standard Arabic (ar) texts.

Yours Sincerely,

Houcemeddine Turki

Dear Sir,

I thank you for your answer. I recommend recognizing this file as the layout for Algerian Arabic speech synthesis. Then, it should have several slight adjustments. Adjusting arq_list by including Algerian pronunciation of numbers and adding [v] to arq_rules and adjusting short vowel pronunciation. As for Arabic (ar), we have just to substitute Algerian phonemes by Arabic phonemes. This will not be very difficult.

Yours Sincerely,

Houcemeddine Turki

According to comments on the espeak-ng mailing list, the Arabic in espeak-ng is arq (Algerian Arabic), not ar (Standard Arabic). As such, both dialects/macrolanguages should be supported once the pronunciation rules have been improved and cleaned up.
