Beta Version 1.90
VE3SUN - Peter Jennings
DX Monitor beta 1.90 is now available at https://ve3sun.com/beta/ The important new feature is the link to the KiwiSDR receiver list which lets you listen to the DX station using someone else's receiver from a location where there is propagation. Right click on a callsign in the main grid or the Band Map and select listen on a KiwiSDR. You will be taken to the KiwiSDR page with the frequency and mode preselected. On that page you will see a map of available receivers coded by predicted signal strength. Click on a cluster of receivers on the map and then select one to listen to. The probability of hearing the DX is very high. I am looking for feedback on how to improve that page, which is a work in progress. Custom filters. To make sure you don't lose the work you have put into your custom filters, always backup the DX Monitor folder. In particular, the DATA folder which contains the *.fil files used for your filters. You should also use your own names for your filters rather than the default names which may be overwritten by an update. Please share your filters. Others would like to benefit from your work. Send them to me in an email and I might even incorporate them into the next release as a standard filter. Broken links for WWV and some other background processes have been corrected in this release. If there is any new feature you would like or a bug you have seen, now is the time to let me know. 73 Peter |

Peter, here is one filter to share for those who have similar interests. Here are the changes I have made for the Rainbow filter, which I use:
1. Background for CW = Black 2. Background for SSB=Blue 3. Background for WARC CW = Light Green 4. Background for WARC SSB = Darler Green 5. ft8 and ft4 frequencies are removed. I don't want to see those spots. This takes constant revision because it continues to be more invasive. I like RTTY but 6. Text for current spots under 30 min = Red 7. Text for spots 30-60 min = White 8. Spots for 60 meters are not shown |

5. but haven't figured out how to separate from all the ft4/ft8 spots yet
The Rainbow.fil is attached. 73, Jim W6YA |

Thanks Jim. When I first created the filters, I had hoped many users would contribute their own and create a library. Nobody did. But it is really important to use your own filter name. Just Save As... W6YA.fil instead of Rainbow.fil which runs the risk of being overwritten in an update. Your name will show up in the list of available filters. On the FT8, note that the LID filter can now filter out any spots with the FT8 in the comments - or other similar comments you want to list. Filtering by frequency is a moving target at best. Always risking throwing out the baby with the bath water. But a detailed list of FT8 frequencies +/- would make a nice filter. Peter, I am still using 1.87. I'm completely afraid of any updating. I updated to 1.88 in a separate folder and replaced my rainbow.fil from 1.87 data folder to the data folder in 1.88. It won't work. I don't want to download the new version because I know I'll lose my rainbow.fil again. BTW I did that previous process also after renaming rainbow.fil to w6ya.fil. It didn't matter, even though I had selected W6YA in the filter list.
I'd just as soon disable those new version update notices (not the cty updates). Is there a way to do that, since they keep showing up? Thanks, Jim W6YA |

As long as you install the new version in its own folder, you can always run the old version until you copy over the W6YA.FIL file from the old folder to the new folder. Just create a link on your desktop to the dxmon.exe file in the old folder. Nobody has ever asked to disable the update warning. It should only occur once a day, but I am not sure. Peter,
I downloaded the 1.91 version to the separate DX Monitor 191 folder. In the version 1.87 folder I copied my rainbow.fil (and the w6ya.fil, a copy of it) from the data folder and pasted it (overwrote) to the data folder in DX Monitor 191. When I start version 1.91 and select either rainbow or w6ya.fil I don't get my original filter layout. Not even close. Font and colors were all different. Are there other files that must be copied and pasted to make my filter work like it did in 1.87? This is the same experience I had before when I loaded v 1.88 and did the same thing with the .fil files. Jim W6YA |

Jim, I installed 1.91 and copied w6ya.fil into the data folder. This is what I get. I don't know if that is what you expect? On Mon, Dec 13, 2021 at 5:34 PM Jim McCook W6YA <JimW6YA@...> wrote: Peter, |

Peter, I finally got the band map and the rest of the program to work like the previous version. It took a lot of changes that don't carry over with an updated version. Here is a list of
items that I had to do to get it set up like the previous version: BANDMAP: Redo/enable the country filter undo highlight DX near terminator undo show all alerts enable LID filter (still have to find and copy the old file from previous version) enable show SNR and show SNR icons reset display font to Consolas Bold 11 reset the time for recent and all spots to 30/60 min from 10/120 that was new default enable show more band buttons MAIN WINDOW enable country filter enable LID filter (I still have to copy the extensive old file from the old version, since it's not carried to new version) reset local spotter range to 1500km (default was zero) enable local spotters reset display font to original arial bold 12 move the entire FCC folder from the old version with the K4HAV contents to enable that database and enable it enable show beam heading copy DX Alerts list from previous version. Moving the Top 30 DXCC.txt file didn't work I haven't checked Preferences yet to see if old settings carried over I'm still trying to find that new option to filter by ft8 comments in the Comment column. I saw a reference to it in the new features but there was no hyperlink I think this pretty well covers it, but there may be some other things I had to redo to make it look like the old version. It would be nice if all these features and data carried through to version updates. This is the reason I'm so nervous about upgrading. I don't want to have to go through all this with each upgrade. Please let me know if I overlooked a method to do that. I still love the program! 73, Jim W6YA |

Peter, one more thing. I copied the Lid List.txt from the old version and pasted it into the new version, replacing the file. When I check the file, it's not pasting the new one. Please tell me how I can get the old LID file into the new program, since my attempt to replace Lid List.txt did not work. Thanks, Jim

Make sure DXMonitor is not running when you copy the old file, otherwise it might get overwritten. Since it is just a text file, you should be able to view and edit it in a text editor. Thank you for that detailed list, Jim. In theory, you could save a profile from the old version and load it in the new version. Save and load profiles is in the File Menu. I will use your list to check the profile data next time I am working on it. It is always possible something gets missed. Peter, thanks for that tip. It would have saved a lot of work! Now I have a problem. I copied the Lid List.txt to the new version, but didn't save the previous Lid List.txt. Now the program won't start without freezing part way through. Apparently it has to match a profile or something. I tried to delete all the content of that file, but am unable to run as administrator, no matter how I try. How can I bail out of this and how should I have restored my old LID list?

We probably should do all this offline, but I don't see an Email address for you on QRZ.com. Anyhow, got the 1.91 program working again, so all I need to to is restore my complete LID list from the previous version without making another mess. I copied Lids My Profile.inx from the old version and pasted into 1.91 (after temporarily renaming that file in the new version). DX Monitor was off. When I started DX Monitor and check the LID list, it was empty. When I go to the File menu and check options, there's nothing for the LID list.

Sounds like you might have moved rather than copied a file. Don't worry about the inx - that is only if you are saving and loading profiles and you have to load an entire profile at once with all the other settings and 5 inx files. Make sure you have a file called Lid List.txt and in it should be a simple list of calls BEFORE running DX Monitor. Perhaps some of it could have been direct, but there are lurkers who will learn from our exchanges and people coming along 6 months from now who will see an answer they need. My email is below. 73 Peter On Tue, Dec 14, 2021 at 12:55 PM Jim McCook W6YA <JimW6YA@...> wrote: We probably should do all this offline, but I don't see an Email address for you on QRZ.com.
