Weekly DSC log from Dorset

Richard Ware

Hello folks

I've had a Tecsun PL-880 on loan for the past week.
I'm impressed with it. Unfortunately it's got to go back to its owner
tomorrow so I'll be hors de combat on MF until I decide what to do
next.

Here's what it's picked up during the past week.
VHF DSC was courtesy of the ICOM IC-R6

There's nothing exciting to report. No sign of Corsen
Ch70 was quiet. The Holyhead logging was at the usual time (around
0800z on a Saturday) and to the usual ship (the Arrow)

YaDDNet Data accuracy, again...

John Pumford-Green

Hello all,

I've had to set up a method of deleting the loggings being sent by contributors who can not set up their Yadd and RX correctly and are sending DSC data bearing the wrong RX Frequency.

Some people make an honest mistake, and once corrected I'm happy to take no further action, but there are a few people who consistently send data that is wrong.

I now have a system running on YaDDNet that looks for all NEW (within the last 24 hours) loggings of a list of RX_IDs and deletes them. The list of RX_IDs is created manually by myself, when I notice obvious errors.

The auto-deletion of data occurs every 30 minutes. If I care to spend the time, this 30 minutes gives me a window of opportunity to decide if a contributor is no longer sending bogus information, and if so I can remove it from the list.

As I write this email the list is:

Gabriele1900SWL
BDXC0182-BertV
IU0JLZ
ITISWLI428LU
YADD2MAP

You can see the list actively being used to auto-delete loggings here:

http://gm4slv.plus.com:8000/pages/php/test/drop_rx_list

and the number of deletions made for these RX_IDs:

http://gm4slv.plus.com:8000/pages/php/logger_mod.php

If you see your own RX_ID on the list, and you believe that you are sending trustworthy data then please let me know by email:

gm4slv@...

and I'll check, and if appropriate I'll remove you from the list.

These links are available from the yaddnet home page, too:

http://gm4slv.plus.com:8000

scroll down to the "Additional Information" area of the index page.

I'd rather be over zealous at deleting data than to let erroneous loggings remain in the database...

I spot "dubious" reports from a SQL query via this page:

http://gm4slv.plus.com:8000/pages/php/test/sanity_3.php

which shows any loggings that are for coast stations on "unusual" frequencies.

The SQL query used is:

$result = mysqli_query($con, "select * from newlog where DATETIME>date_sub(now(), interval 3 day) and ( (RX_FREQ > 2189.5 and RX_FREQ < 30000.0 and FROM_TYPE = 'COAST' and ( FROM_MID = 244 or RAW_FROM_MMSI = '002191000' or FROM_MID = 247 or FROM_MID = 261 or FROM_MID = 232 or FROM_MID = 250 or FROM_MID = 211 or FROM_MID = 227 or FROM_MID = 205) and RAW_FROM_MMSI != '002320204' and RAW_FROM_MMSI != '219015591' ) or (RX_FREQ = '2187.5' and FROM_TYPE = 'COAST' and (FROM_MID = 366 or FROM_MID = 503)) or ( RX_FREQ = '2177.0' and FROM_TYPE = 'COAST' and (FROM_MID != '257' and FROM_MID != '224' and FROM_MID != '251' and FROM_MID != '235' and FROM_MID != '237' and FROM_MID != '276' and FROM_MID != '205' and FROM_MID != '228' and FROM_MID != '258' and FROM_MID != '219' ) )) order by DATETIME desc");

It attempts to spot European coast stations being reported on HF, American and Australian Coast Stations reported on MF and Coast Stations outside of the "normal" MIDs using 2177.0.

This tends to catch situations where a contributor is mis-reporting. It doesn't catch all their "duff" data, but gives a clue that something is wrong....

I'm tiring of the effort needed to keep things "clean", and might decide soon that YaDDNet has run its course, and is no longer a viable project...

Regards,

John
GM4SLV

Cheers,

John

A sign of life

Thomas (tiNG)

Dear mates,

today a short sign of life on my part. For a little more than a year I am very busy both professionally and privately and can't listen to shortwave. After our move, we bought our own house, the shack is still packed in boxes waiting to be rebuilt and set up.

Due to private and family circumstances, I could not tackle that yet, the hobby had since stood behind. The same applies to the previous personal contacts with some of you. I owe you a few emails with an answer but right now I just can't manage it. But you are not forgotten, I will come back to you later.

I spent some hours on the bands but these were rather modest audits with a small world receiver and there was nothing spectacular to log. That's why I decided not to put what I heard in a mail to share it with you.

Still I will have to refrain from sending logs or participate in discussions for some time. But, God willing, by the end of this year I hope to be QRV again and will share my receptions with you or answer your last personal emails.

Meanwhile, I will follow your posts carefully and enjoy your logs.

Best regards from the north of Germany.

Thomas (tiNG)

Hi Thomas,

Good to hear you are making progress back into the hobby - I do remember your DSC contributions back in 2016/17 and look forward to seeing more in the future as and when circumstances are right for you.

Best regards,

Hi Peter,

You are absolutely right it should be 002040100.

Not sure how that happened - the logs were a simple cut-and-paste!

REU - DSC logs from W Scotland

Hello All,

John: Thank you for all the work you put in to keeping the database clean.
You rightly suggest that a database with errors is a waste of everyone's
time. Although I will do whatever I can to help with the upkeep, I do wonder
who actually makes use of the data.

One of the problems is that ANYONE can upload data. Although I am sure that
no-one is deliberately uploading faulty data, there must be several
uploaders who never look at the database, and who might not even monitor
this list. So they might not see that there is a problem with their set-up.
Would it be possible to require everyone who wishes to upload data to first
register with the server, and for the registration to require a contact
email address. Then, if we spotted a problem, the sender could be contacted
directly. Perhaps the query you run could send an automatic message to the
uploader at the same time as deleting the fault.

Nothing fancy in the log, here. This is the log for the past 7 days:-

Hello David and all,

You rightly suggest that a database with errors is a waste of everyone's
time. Although I will do whatever I can to help with the upkeep, I do wonder

I don't know who uses it, and if it is of any real benefit to anyone (beyond a few of the regular contributors) so perhaps it's time to consider the prospect of shutting it down?

One of the problems is that ANYONE can upload data.
This is one of the advantages though, but it's also a disadvantage!

Would it be possible to require everyone who wishes to upload data to first
register with the server, and for the registration to require a contact
email address. Then, if we spotted a problem, the sender could be contacted
directly.
This is one of the things I'm thinking about.

YaDD itself has no way of "handshaking" with the YaDDNet server - it just sends UDP packets for each DSC message, so anyone can tick the box and start sending me data...

What I might consider is a server-side list of "registered" RX_IDs and to discard any incoming messages from anyone not on the list. This would be relatively easy to set up, but would need constant attention to add new RX_IDs when new people want to share their data.

I wanted to make YaDDNet run automatically with as little manual intervention as possible, and the idea that I will need to add each new RXID whenever someone wants to "join YaDDNet" is not very attractive.

However, even this is not foolproof, as there's nothing to stop anyone just using using one of the known RX_IDs. Without a change in YaDD itself there's no way of having an authentication/password access control.

And anyway - why should I/we have to go to such lengths? It's only a hobby.

The "network logging" feature in YaDD was added so that anyone could collate the data from multiple copies of their _own_ instances of YaDD across a network connection, and I decided to put something together to collate the data from anyone who wanted to share it with the rest of the community.

If I have to start instigating access control and authentication to keep the database as accurate as I'd like it to be, then that's when it leaves the domain of a hobby and it's time for me to turn it off!

Perhaps the query you run could send an automatic message to the
uploader at the same time as deleting the fault.
Unfortunately just deleting messages that are caught by my "sanity" tests isn't sufficient. All it can do is spot that someone has configured YaDD incorrectly, but can't detect ALL the "bad" messages sent from a mis-configured YaDD.

If things don't settle down soon I might have no option but to discontinue it, though.

Cheers,

John
