Re: REU DSC logs from northern North-Central-Finland

I already have the station coordinates in the YaDD Coast Stations data, but the REU / RNA report still doesn't show the distance?

Hi Raimo
thank you for the description of your QTH and sun light timing
over there. It must be a very nice place. For those one's like me
living in a big city having a 500 meters long antenna ( or even
"only" 50 meters) is a dream. I presume that noise level over there
is quite low. I can imagine that propagation in this period in your
QTH is not the best due to very short nights. Anyhow watching your
logs it looks that you are doing fine. Congratulations for
002241002 Almeria Radio, E, 3443 Km !
I noticed that you have many Italian stations without distance in Km.
If in your updated file you don't have the coordinates of a station ,
what I do is measuring distance with Google map and inserting the
distance in the cost stations file . May be you knew it already, but
just in case.
Take care and good DX !

This is a bit of a grey area, isn't it?
Does "update" mean 'it will change something if it's different to
what's already there' or does it simply mean 'it will add it to the
list if it's not already there' and if it IS already there I'll ignore
it'

Also, I think there's a discrepancy between the YADDNet home page and
what actually happens. Again, John will put me right on this, but,
almost at the bottom, it says "if this is unsuccessful the marine
traffic website is used". I don't think that's the case any more as I
seem to recall John mentioning that marine traffic dot com had altered
its 'look up' interaction facility. This all came to a head some
months back with the YADD2MAP program, I believe. As I mentioned
earlier, the myshiptracking dot com site is used instead of
shiptraffic
Standing by to be corrected/shot down in flames/whatever !

Ah well. Keep calm and give her 5 degrees of starboard helm !
Bring back the Morse key

So - 311378000 is not in my original ship txt file.

I must have picked up a signal from the ship and it has added it to the txt file from aprs.fi....

YaDD doesn't update what is already there....

Hi All

So, I've just checked one of my instances of YaDD and here is what I find:-

It seems that, if you have an API-key - it updates the txt file with the current name....

Please let me know if I'm missing something, but that means YaDD is very smart!

Re: YADD_mmsi_ship file question

Hi Andy

I use an API-key from aprs.fi - which, using 311378000 as an example, has the correct name.

I have never looked more into this, or experiment, however:-

By default, YaDD will resolve ship data from the file yadd_MMSI_ship.txt.
When data for a ship are not found in the file, YaDD can optionally get ship
data online from APRS.FI., and update the file accordingly.

For this to work, you need to apply for a API-key at <https://aprs.fi/signup/>
and enter/paste the key in the box below. The key is free, but required!
When no key is entered, ship data will only be retrieved from file.

Does this mean that if we delete the contents of YADD_mmsi_ship, it will only take correct information from aprs.fi?

Seems a bit drastic and may reduce the number of ship stations ID'd, but at least what information there is in the log will be correct?

REU DSC Log IO76jq NW Scotland

Hi All

Hope everyone is OK...

Here is my log for the last week or so...

The only thing of note was good grey line conditions at dusk and dawn 17/18th with Bangkok Radio and Mar del Plata Radio being logged on MF (the latter being new to my log!). Curacao and Bermuda Harbour are still showing, for the time being, on the miniwhip but the US stations have been fairly quiet this week, with no shows from Miami and Boston...

I have taken down my 4 MHz PC (Receiver 4) for a couple of days while I do my HAM foundation exam - online - on Sunday am. I preferred to use my laptop but when I did the check this morning, with the examiner, to ensure that my video/audio link was OK I found my laptop's microphone wasn't working.... Having to use one of my radio PCs means of course that, having fiddled with the sound settings to enable DSC, it took some time to get it right - so I'm just going to leave it as it is.

Folks

I'm having the same problem with the ship station list.
John is the man to ask when it comes to the nuts and bolts of this but
I believe the info comes originally from the myshiptracking dot com
site. It's not an official site. The info coming out can only be as
accurate as the info going in. That's where it all falls down. The
operative word is "accurate"

What happens when a ship changes its name but not its MMSI number or callsign?
An example: MMSI 311378000
The YADDNet list of ships shows it as TUI DISCOVERY 2 (callsign C6SL5)
If I check my usual site the name is shown as MARELLA DISCOVERY 2
|(same callsign)
Further searching shows the name was changed from TUI DISCOVERY 2 to
MARELLA DISCOVERY 2 in October 2017.
That's nearly 3 years ago

Yes, we all know that the ship's name does not form part of the
message but I like to keep things as up-to-date as possible.
I have to go through my daily list of ships logged (I do VHF only
otherwise it would be a never-ending job) and compare what YADDNet
says against what the real world says.

My theory is that once a MMSI is tied up, that's it. If the same MMSI
is found later, the system says "ah, that MMSI is already allocated.
Off to the next one".
It would be an impossible and thankless task for John, or anyone else
for that matter, to keep it 100% up-to-date. Checking the best part of
70,000 entries? No way!
If only there was a system that said "hang on a minute, MMSI 232000232
is no longer the SAUCY SUE, it's the CAPTAIN BIRDSEYE", and changed
it automatically, I'd put my hame down for one straight away. As it
is, I think we have to make do with what we've got.

That's my pennys-worth
It's only a hobby, that's the main thing

YADD_mmsi_ship file question

DL1DXX

Hello dear all

I have a question about the YADD_mmsi_ship file which I have downloaded
from the

Multi-Receiver Multi-Band MF/HF/VHF DSC Monitoring web site.

Where are these data coming from? "Only" a collection from the YADD log
input?

And where are the data came from if a ship was received which is not in
this file?

I see  for example  205762000,GENER8 KARA G,UNK,N/A

but checking this MMSI, I found SELENA - Oil Tanker with callsign ONJT.

Is this list "handmade" years ago even those "UNK, N/A" info?

Has there ever been a kind of update?

It seems that those ship MMSI numbers are not checked with an offical
database and I don't know

if this is possible.

Would be great if someone can enlighten me.

REU DSC logs from northern North-Central-Finland

Raimo Karjalainen

Greetings, now for a long time I can spend a long weekend in another QTH, in the countryside, where I have the opportunity to listen to radio stations in slightly different conditions than at home in QTH in Central Finland. I am now in the countryside, north-central Finland, in the municipality of Siikalatva about 60 kilometers south of the City of Oulu.

In the winter, I can build long wire antennas here, 500 meters long for cereal fields. But now, with the advent of spring, the fields are out of use until the fall, that is, the use of the radio enthusiast. Currently, there is only one wire antenna about 50 meters long, facing south.

I am about 300 kilometers north of here at home, and more to the north rise and fall times of the sun are different from those in the south. The sun sets at 2000 UTC and rises to 0030 UTC, the length of the day here is 19 and a half hours. The home in QTH is about an hour and a half longer than an hour. Due to the short darkness, really only twilight, receiving at low frequencies is more challenging than in the south.

Down here is my log from here "North," QTH Siikalatva.

Re: how to fill in a correct reception report

Richard Ware

Hello all

Further to earlier messages, although I don’t go in for QSL-ing ships or coast stations, since monitoring Ch70 I have started to take more interest in the ships I’m logging rather than coast stations. I use the GISIS portal of the IMO site.

Gisis dot imo dot org

Registration to the public access area is required (it’s free). Then search the ‘Ship and Company Particulars’ area

I’ve attached some screen grabs to give you an idea of what you can see

Incidentally, the ship I have highlighted (GH STORM CAT) is shown as SAINTY VALIANT on YADDNet but its name was changed way back iin December 2014 !

Hi Brandon

Ship addresses can be found at:
http://www.equasis.org/EquasisWeb/authen/HomePage?fs=HomePage
You have to register - but this is free. I'm there since 10 years or so....

Searching for a MMSI number,  go to "Management details" and there you find the address.
BUT:    Please check the Company website in the internet! Equasis list the physical address and
and no address with the P.O. Box which can be found on the Companies website. And check always
if the ship still belongs to the Company - search for fleet or fleetlist on the Companies website!
Things are changing fast sometimes. Take the address from the Companies website.

I only write to Companies in Europe or USA, Australia. Postal ways in other countries are
very unsure and the return rate there is going near to zero. This is my experience.

You won't find address for military ships, drilling rigs or sailing ships there.

Yesterday I got the USNS Comfort confirmed. This Navy Hospital ship was in New York
in March during Covid-19 pandemic.

Having now 1500+ ship QSLs in DSC (2200+ DSC and SSB), I'm now more
concentrating on military ships, lifeboats and Coast Guard ships. Hard nuts.
But I still like QSLs :-)

If you have further questions, no problem.

Stay safe and take care,
Andy - DL1DXX

Re: how to fill in a correct reception report

Brandon Jordan

Andy,

Excellent info. I have QSL’d lots of DSC coastal stations but no ships. I am curious how you locate snail mail addresses for the ships in order to send reports?
