REU DSC logs from northern North-Central-Finland

Raimo Karjalainen

Greetings, now for a long time I can spend a long weekend in another QTH, in the countryside, where I have the opportunity to listen to radio stations in slightly different conditions than at home in QTH in Central Finland. I am now in the countryside, north-central Finland, in the municipality of Siikalatva about 60 kilometers south of the City of Oulu.

In the winter, I can build long wire antennas here, 500 meters long for cereal fields. But now, with the advent of spring, the fields are out of use until the fall, that is, the use of the radio enthusiast. Currently, there is only one wire antenna about 50 meters long, facing south.

I am about 300 kilometers north of here at home, and more to the north rise and fall times of the sun are different from those in the south. The sun sets at 2000 UTC and rises to 0030 UTC, the length of the day here is 19 and a half hours. The home in QTH is about an hour and a half longer than an hour. Due to the short darkness, really only twilight, receiving at low frequencies is more challenging than in the south.

Down here is my log from here "North," QTH Siikalatva.

Re: how to fill in a correct reception report

Richard Ware

Hello all

Further to earlier messages, although I don’t go in for QSL-ing ships or coast stations, since monitoring Ch70 I have started to take more interest in the ships I’m logging rather than coast stations. I use the GISIS portal of the IMO site.

Gisis dot imo dot org

Registration to the public access area is required (it’s free). Then search the ‘Ship and Company Particulars’ area

I’ve attached some screen grabs to give you an idea of what you can see

Incidentally, the ship I have highlighted (GH STORM CAT) is shown as SAINTY VALIANT on YADDNet but its name was changed way back iin December 2014 !

Hi Brandon

Ship addresses can be found at:
http://www.equasis.org/EquasisWeb/authen/HomePage?fs=HomePage
You have to register - but this is free. I'm there since 10 years or so....

Searching for a MMSI number,  go to "Management details" and there you find the address.
BUT:    Please check the Company website in the internet! Equasis list the physical address and
and no address with the P.O. Box which can be found on the Companies website. And check always
if the ship still belongs to the Company - search for fleet or fleetlist on the Companies website!
Things are changing fast sometimes. Take the address from the Companies website.

I only write to Companies in Europe or USA, Australia. Postal ways in other countries are
very unsure and the return rate there is going near to zero. This is my experience.

You won't find address for military ships, drilling rigs or sailing ships there.

Yesterday I got the USNS Comfort confirmed. This Navy Hospital ship was in New York
in March during Covid-19 pandemic.

Having now 1500+ ship QSLs in DSC (2200+ DSC and SSB), I'm now more
concentrating on military ships, lifeboats and Coast Guard ships. Hard nuts.
But I still like QSLs :-)

If you have further questions, no problem.

Stay safe and take care,
Andy - DL1DXX

Re: how to fill in a correct reception report

Brandon Jordan

Andy,

Excellent info. I have QSL’d lots of DSC coastal stations but no ships. I am curious how you locate snail mail addresses for the ships in order to send reports?

Brandon

Thanks Rich. I've been monitoring Ch70 for the last hour and it's not busy - which is to be expected, I suppose. Point taken in respect of input levels.

I don't know if this is sheer coincidence, but yesterday evening I
changed the SeaTTY soundcard sampling rate from 11025 (its default
setting) to 48000.
Now it's matching the COAA decoder pound-for-pound, with 14 'hits' on
each decoder between 0001 and 0700 GMT
Nothing's gone bang. There's no smoke coming from the laptop. Onwards
and upwards !

Ups - I forget the main thing. Include a ppc (prepared post card/letter) with the details of the station/ship (Station/Ship name, callsign, MMSI number, Frequency, Date, Time and Mode).
In case of ships, a nice photo from the internet would be great on your ppc-QSL. You may add transmitting power and ships position in case of ships and ask to fill in. Ask them to sign and stamp the letter and sent it back to you.
As less work as possible for the reader!

Re: how to fill in a correct reception report

Hi Rosario,

I write reception reports - 1559 ship QSLs and 70 landbased QSLs in DSC so far...

I write personal letters and I don't use any standard form letters. Write some short words about you like profession, age, city you live in, that your hobby is shortwave-listening and that you like to collect verification from ships/stations that you had received. All together in 3 to 4 sentences. People don't have time to read a 4 page letter in this times.
Don't use SINPO or SINFO - they do not know what it is. Write if the signalstrength was good/medium/weak, and if there was some fading and atmospheric noise on the QRG and that you have had no or little problems to receive the station.
Important: mention you email address beside your physical address. Sometimes you will get an answer via email. That's short and efficiently.
In 99,9 per cent I send letters by postal ways and no email. I think that most emails went directly into the spam folder.
I don't include postage - just a self-addressed-envelope. Writing to german stations, I enclose a self-addressed-and-stamped-envelope.

Mention your receiver, antenna and decoding software (mulitpsk e.g.). 2-3 Sentences are enough.

For the reception details, copy the received message into your report like:

(MF=2.1875 MHz) <Selective call to a particular individual station>
Called MMSI station address: 002442000 [Coast station: Netherland CG Radio] (Netherlands)
Category: Safety
MMSI self-identifier: 311513000  SEVEN SEAS VOYAGER - C6SW3
Telecommand 1: Test
Telecommand 2: No information
Neither RX/TX frequencies nor position supplied
Check Sum: OK
Date and time of decoding: 03/10/2016 06:47:25

Return rate from ships is slightly under 40 per cent. So 4 answers from 10 letters send...could be less.

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, I'm here :-)

HELLO Jay,

I am grateful to you for the indications and for 2_ListIV_compilation I only had 1_ListIV_compilation, in the future I will try to send some reports.

Hi Rosario

Sorry - I missed your message...

Traditionally a reception report would have your name, address, callsign, location GSQ lat/long, equipment used, signal received with SINPO etc... sent by letter with a stamped, self addressed envelope.

I just sent an email (translated into the appropriate language) with the raw data from YaND - however I was only looking for confirmation due to the errors.

So I was surprised to get a paper QSL, however it seems from their letter that they are always grateful to receive signal reports...

I got the email address from List IV:-

https://www.itu.int/net/ITU-R/terrestrial/docs/mars/2_ListIV_compilation.pdf

This is an old edition so some addresses may not be correct..but there are postal addresses too..

Hope this is some help, this is not something I have done very often..

Best Regards & Good DX

Thanks Rich. I've been monitoring Ch70 for the last hour and it's not busy - which is to be expected, I suppose. Point taken in respect of input levels.

I'm trying a couple of decoders for VHF DSC - SeaTTY and Coaa's DSC decoder. Both on trial at the moment. I will be using an SDRPlay RSP2 and wondered what reception mode and filters i should use - together with any other hints and tips you might have? I'm in Essex and assume that channel 70 would apply here?

I've altered the subject line as we're not talking about Saint Quay
Signal Station any more are we?

I don't have any SDR gubbins in the shack. I prefer the old 'sit up
and beg' wirelesses with knobs and pushbuttons and whatnot so I have
no idea what filtering would be required on your RSP2.
Be that as it may.

For VHF DSC I use the little Icom ICR-6 handheld scanner with SeaTTY
and the COAA decoder. with a patch lead from the speaker socket of the
ICOM into the laptop's MIC socket. FM is used on Ch70 and that channel
is universally used for VHF DSC so you'll be OK in Essex
The only thing I would say, and this goes for all data decoding that
I've done over the years (VHF ACARS, HFDL and DSC) is "don't overcook
the audio" On the ICOM's volume control (range 00 to 39) I have it set
on 10, with the squelch open
