MMSI number 235899991

Richard Ware

Hello folks

Ch70 can be pretty quiet when you're 40 miles inland, but every so
often something interesting comes along

Here's part of today's log which includes traffic to/from the RNLI
college at Poole.(235899980)

235899991-GBR (routine) from * RNLI College Poole *,-GBR F3
ch00VHF/no freq REQ [19-01-10 14:23:13]
* RNLI College Poole *,-GBR (routine) from 000000000 F3
ch00VHF/ch00VHF REQ [19-01-10 14:14:03]
* RNLI College Poole *,-GBR (routine) from 000000000 F3
ch00VHF/ch00VHF REQ [19-01-10 14:11:11]

Not wishing to put 2 and 2 together and make 7, but I have a sneaky
suspicion that 235899991 could well be another number used by either
the college of maybe a generic number for lifeboats under commission
or ones under refit As the transmission came from Poole, they
mentioned Ch00 and with all those 'nines' in the MMSI number I'd wager
it's something from the Poole campus or pretty close thereto. A pity
there was no reply from 235899991 just to prove the number exists

I could always bang off an email I suppose

Cheers
Rich

Googling the MMSI number shows just the one link, where it appears as
a hypothetical ship's MMSI number in a test question from the Royal
Yachting Association for the VHF Radio Short Range Certificate. Of all
the MMSI numbers available, why did they choose that one?

So, maybe it's tied up with the RYA and not the RNLI. Another of
life's unanswered questions !

Hi Rich,   Unfortunately I had no reception of 235899980 today in fact I have not logged the RNLI College on Ch 70 VHF yet but have them on 2187.5 Khz also on 4/6/8 Mhz Maybe I have a blind spot to them?

You could try an email to them I've had success often with Colleges - once your email gets to the right tech person.

All good fun    Peter

Hello All,

I see the RNLI College in Poole has been very active in the last couple of days. They are getting out well, too, as both John and I logged them from the north, and Vincent from the East (amongst others).
Is this a training course, or are there some boats being refitted and tested?

Best Wishes
David, GM8XBZ

David/folks

Poole is the RNLI HQ. It's also the location of their training college
and the home of the ALC (all-weather lifeboat centre). It's where they
build them, overhaul them and refit them so there's always something
scooting about in Poole Harbour either on trials, on training, ex
maintenance or whatever. They could also be doing radio tests with new
or overhauled equipment. The Inshore Lifeboat Centre is at Cowes, Isle
of Wight.

My logging of Poole on Ch70 on 10th was the first time I've logged it on Ch70

Cheers
Rich

Database Anomaly

david

Hello All,
Bringing my WWSU log into line with logs automatically uploaded to YaDDNet,
I found a difference in descriptions:

On 2177kHz, 258999089 is "Karmsund Vid,Skol LJ2B"
On 2187.5Khz, 258999089 is "Kamsund Vid.Skol LJ2B"

Not the end of the world, but can we confirm the correct version, and bring
the records into line?

On a related note, I had assumed that the 'LJ2B' was a callsign, but I see
that 258999039 Vestfold College has the same suffix. Can anyone help me with
the meaning of the 'LJ2B', then?

All good database fun.

Best Wishes
David, GM8XBZ

If I could shove in my two-penny-worth

As a station's name doesn't form part of the DSC message, in theory
there's nothing to stop you calling it anything you want (within
reason, I suppose!) if you keep the info to yourself.
Once you start sharing, that's when problems could occur Whose
database do we use as 'the one we must all adhere to' and why? One
man's 'Sailor Examiner' could well be another man's 'Pandrup Test',
for example.Same MMSI number, different name. My own coast station
database for DSC Decoder shows the UK coastguard stations with their
names plus a simple "CG" suffix, and shore stations using ships' MMSI
numbers have an asterisk at the beginning and end of their names so I
can spot them easily when I'm looking at the DSC decoder screen. A
problem would occur if that was how YADDNet read it as someone else
might well have the same station with a different name, e.g 002320011
is Solent CG to me but it could well Solent COASTGUARD to someone else
and could result in duplicate entries which would take up oodles of
unnecessary space on the server. This duplication doesn't happen as
John has got some trickery installed in the heart of YADDNet to ensure
that irrespective of what your database may say and what gets uploaded
to YADDNet, it will be crunched saved and output to your own RWW
report using the station name from the YADD database, not yours. The
databases my well be the same but this is done just in case they're
not. Clever dot com

I've no idea what happens when my weekly log gets uploaded to REU. I
just 'send and forget' !

As for the LJ2B callsign....PASS !

Cheers
Rich

Hi David,

According to Marine Traffic site the spelling is 'Karmsund'  Also the correct callsigns are shown as Karmsund LJ2B   and for Vestfold LJ2P

I've updated the REU to show these changes.

73 for now....
