Hello All,

No reasons to hang out the bunting, this week. I had a 'new' UNID on
2177kHz:

Re: YADD_mmsi_ship file question

Andy - DL1DXX

John
Indeed a big THANK YOU for the very comprehensive and informative explanation!
Highly appreciated. I took your answer to my documents.

Years ago, I took the YaDD MMSI file and the MultiPSK MMSI file, removed all duplicates and created one file which I nearly daily check and change some outdated shipnames/callsigns and add new once - only 2187,5 kHz as said.

As mentioned before, I checked some MMSI from the latest YaDD list with my excel database. As expected, there are old files in the YaDD (and of course MultipPSK) file and some, which are newer then in my file. Also some already checked MMSI numbers in my list had changed. It would be a neverending story without
prospect of success, ever to be complete.

There is no chance to see, when a shipname had changed and there is even no chance to see, how old one datafile (MMSI,shipname, callsign, type) is. This could only be possible, if a kind of date could be added behind the datafile (
MMSI,shipname,callsign,type,202005 (YearMonth)).

Anyway, I'm happy to know how YadDD works with APRS.FI - Thank you so much!

Regards and stay safe

Re: YADD_mmsi_ship file question

Dirk Claessens

Hi John & all,

Yadds ship file yadd_mmsi_ship.txt is updated in a similar way as you explained for Yaddnets database, except that only APRS.FI is used.

Cheers - Dirk

On 23/05/2020 11:56, John Pumford-Green wrote:
Hello all,

Dirk is the person to ask about how YaDD itself uses the "ship file" and its own ability to resolve an MMSI->ship name within YaDD, via your own personal API key for APRS.fi

I only know about how the YaDDNet website/database works.....

The resolution functionality  (MMSI -> Ship Name/callsign/type) for the YaDDNet database was added many years ago, because it was a little dull seeing Coast Station names but only Ship's MMSI.

I found that the APRS.FI website had a lot of Ship/MMSI data (presumably obtained by taking names etc. from on-air AIS messages) and with an API key you could query it based on the MMSI to get a lot of information. I wrote a function in YaDDNet to try and automatically create my own ship name database as each new vessel MMSI was received in messages uploaded by contributors.

The basic functionality was:

DSC Message received from a contributor (all input from YADD contains ONLY MMSI, no names)

YaDDNet looks in its own ShipName database to see if this MMSI is already known.

If it is known then the already stored Name/Callsign/Type is used for the Ship and the DSC Message is added to YaDDNet.

If it IS NOT already known a query is sent using the APRS.FI API Key to APRS.FI to ask for the data held for this MMSI.

If APRS.FI has a record of this vessel the returned data (a JSON data record) is parsed to extract the Name/Callsign/Type. The DSC message is then stored in YaDDNet.

The new Ship Name data is added to YaDDNet's own internal Ship Database for future lookups.

Hope this helps?

John

Re: YADD_mmsi_ship file question

Richard Ware <richardjware@...>

Thanks for the info John.

Very comprehensive, as usual

My ship station list for DSC decoder (I don't use YADD) comprises only
those shore establishments with ships' MMSI numbers (RNLI Poole,
Sailor Examiner etc) .

Yes, DSC decoder still uses the 'right click to access the ITU
database' routine. I don't use it as I prefer to see an MMSI rather
than a name.
I then run a check of that MMSI against the info at gisis.imo.org and
whatever my REU report shows. The (what I assume is correct) info goes
into a 'First Logged on Ch70' SQL database (see attachment) purely for
my own records and not searchable by DSC decoder. A tad time-consuming
which is why I've had to limit it to VHF only but I do like having
things as up-to-date as possible.

On the subject of "Name Changes" - yes, vessels often change name but
keep the same MMSI and this isn't handled at all in YaDDNet - once a
vessel has been put in the ShipName database then YaDDNet will use this
for ALL future occasions that the vessel's MMSI appears.
That's what I thought, and it answers my question

Cheers. Stay safe everybody
Rich

Re: YADD_mmsi_ship file question

John Pumford-Green

Originally, when YaDDNet was younger, there were 2 other sources of online data that I could use for times that APRS.FI returned "Not Found".

These were the MarineTraffic.com website and the ITU "MARS Database" website. They used simple HTML queries to retrieve an HTML page of information for the vessel in question and YaDDNet could parse the raw HTML to extract the Ship Name etc.

The procedure was:

Look up MMSI in YaDDNet's database.

If not found query APRS.FI

If not found query ITU MARS website

If not found query MarineTraffic website

If not found at all 3 sites then name it after it's MMSI with Callsign UNK and Type N/A. Insert a record in YaDDNet's Ship Database so that the ship appears to be already known (as MMSI;UNK;N/A) to prevent further fruitless lookups at APRS.FI/ITU/MarineTraffic.

A regular purge was then done to delete any "known" ships of "Callsign:UNK" from the database, so that if, at a later date APRS.FI DID have the ship in record we'd eventually get its name, callsign and Vessel Type.

I created a function on the YaDDNet website to allow people to create and download an up to date copy of the current ship database, in a format suitable for use in YaDD (and another for DSCDecoder).

http://www.yaddnet.org/pages/php/mmsi_shipname_ordered.php

At some point in history Dirk must have taken a copy and bundled it up with the installer for YaDD, which is why YaDD users have an old but still useful, ship file (I might be wrong about this, it's been a long time since I installed a copy of YaDD from scratch).

In recent years the ITU MARS webpage no longer works in a way that allows simple HTML-based query to call up a page for the vessel in question, so I had to drop that source of ship name resolution in YaDDNet. I think DSCDecoder used the same method of lookups for ships (right click a ship MMSI on DSCDecoder and it used to find the ship name at the ITU, but this no longer works).

If you look at the ShipName file from YaDDNet you'll see these kinds of entries:

1) 314481000;ELATI;8PAR9;Cargo

This has a Name, Callsign and Vessel Type. It will have come from APRS.FI

2) 257128000;LEANDER;LCJG;N/A

This has Name, Callsign but no Vessel Type. It will have come from a query to ITU MARS website.

3) 511100287;S.P.SPLIT I;UNK;N/A

This has Name, but no Callsign or Vessel Type. It will have come from MarineTraffic, after a failure to find it at APRS.FI or ITU

4) 625329006;625329006;UNK;N/A

This has no Name,Callsign,Vessel Type. It is listed with the Name = MMSI. The MMSI must not have been found at any online source.

I have a feeling I suspended the regular purge of "UNK;N/A" records from YaDDNet's database, since it appears that if a vessel isn't found the first time then it's not found on subsequent tries, days or weeks or months later, so it seems futile to keep looking.

On the subject of "Name Changes" - yes, vessels often change name but keep the same MMSI and this isn't handled at all in YaDDNet - once a vessel has been put in the ShipName database then YaDDNet will use this for ALL future occasions that the vessel's MMSI appears.

Also there are errors in both MarineTraffic and APRS.FI - sometimes a vessel MMSI shows different names at the two sites, which is right? YaDDNet will use ARPS.FI if this provides a result, before looking at MarineTraffic....

The only way around this is to do a regular purge of ALL the data in the ship name database to force a fresh lookup at APRS.FI & MarineTraffic.

This would create more lookup-traffic between YaDDNet and the online data sources, and also, now that the ITU MARS data can no longer be used, it means we'd eventually lose vessels that were only listed on that site, and are not listed at APRS.FI or MarineTraffic.

There are, no doubt, official sources of MMSI data, and presumably access can be arranged (for a cost). My initial approach was to use existing free sources of data - and now this is limited to APRS.FI and MarineTraffic.

I don't intend to change anything at present.

You can see YaDDNet's resolution in action here:

http://www.yaddnet.org/pages/php/logger_resolver.php?

As an aside :

The MarineTraffic query returns a page like:

https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/index/search/all?keyword=511100287

and the HTML of this page is parsed automatically in YaDDNet to extract Name (but no callsign or Vessel type)

If you are particularly interested in Ship names the only option is to edit your Ship Name file locally yourself with any more accurate information you are able to find.

Hope this helps?

John

Hello dear all
I have a question about the YADD_mmsi_ship file which I have downloaded
from the
Multi-Receiver Multi-Band MF/HF/VHF DSC Monitoring web site.
Where are these data coming from? "Only" a collection from the YADD log
input?
And where are the data came from if a ship was received which is not in
this file?
I see  for example  205762000,GENER8 KARA G,UNK,N/A
but checking this MMSI, I found SELENA - Oil Tanker with callsign ONJT.
Is this list "handmade" years ago even those "UNK, N/A" info?
Has there ever been a kind of update?
It seems that those ship MMSI numbers are not checked with an offical
database and I don't know
if this is possible.
Would be great if someone can enlighten me.

Re: YADD_mmsi_ship file question

Andy - DL1DXX

Hi Jay, Rich,

thanks for your comments and thanks for the APRS.FI tip!. I use MultiPSK instead of YaDD. Both programms have a shiplist which is compatible. You just have to change the name. YaDD is YADD_MMSI_SHIP.txt and MultiPSK is ShipData.txt. The format of the list is the same.

I choose MultiPSK because I can read the created files with excel and check by a marco, which ship or MMSI is new, from which MMSI/Ship I have a QSL and to which MMSI/Ship I have send a report and got jet no answer. This plays together with my excel-logbook.

So when reading a new txt-file from MultiPSK from an overnight recording, I check all new ships (these are not logged before) manually in the internet and put them into my self-created ship-data list - which can of course even be used by YaDD as it is the same format. In my database are 65.000 ships (MMSI numbers) from which are nearly 27.800 are manually proofed. I only do this for 2187,5 kHz receptions. Otherwise it would be to much. Of course the shipname can change again when I had added a new ship or change the name/callsign from an old entry in the ship.txt file.

So my question went into the direction, to proof the still unproofed ships to correct the old and outdated data. I thought there would be an other way then doing it manually.

The 205762000,GENER8 KARA G,UNK,N/A example would be in my database 205762000,SELENA,ONJT,Oil Tanker
The type of the ship is more specific in my file. I have Bulk Carrier, General Cargo, Container, Vehicle Carrier, Cement Carrier, Limestone Carrier etc instead of only Cargo. Clicking on a ship at APRS.FI (e.g. Canadian Highway), it shows the data and the type is Cargo. But in my list it is more specific - here a Vehicels Carrier

I will compare the latest YaDD MMSI list with my database. So may be I can replace some old shipnames from my database.
Thanks again for writing.
