D4D low power output

Nicholas Triantafyllou

Hi

I have recently built the D4D kit for the 40m band. The whole experience of building it was great. I have a small problem with the power output however. Even with 800mV at the input and with no modifications made so far I only get 0.8W output. The current draw is 180mA when transmitting. This is into a 50 Ohm dummy load and also into my 40m antenna that has an SWR of 1.2 at 7074Khz

I have replaced both output transistors and checked the toroid winding and all components. Is anyone experiencing similar issues?

Thanks

Folks,

A few of customers might have questions when you receive your HT-1A kit or assembled kit. Let me explain a few things:

1. User manual is not included. You will need to download from http://crkits.com/ at here Download the user manual, kit building instructions and schematics in zipped format
If you have purchased kits from crkits, you will know nomrally that a printed one page manual will be put in the kit to guide you the important items and a few links to download. However, the HT-1A kit is prepared directly by the designer BD4RG, so the printed manual is not included. Please understand.

2. Even for assembled kit customers, you will receive a PCB and a few spare parts. Yes, this is free for your modification or repair purposes. Please keep them.

3. For kit customers, you will receive two potentiometers while there is only one hole on the panel. Because the panel space is limited, only one hole is reserved, however, the board has two sockets (RF and AF) to choose for the connection. If you want to use both AF and RF attenuation, you can consider adding a hole on the rear panel.

Thanks,
Adam

Ron,

It is correct that the C1162 collector connected to the back plate, but the back plate is insulated with the mounting hole because there is a layer of black insulator inside the hole, if you look closely.

Adam

Re: New Record: D4D QSO Distance

Adam Rong

Update a new QSO from BG7IKK and K7BV with distance of 13499km (from South China to East Coast of USA).
Rig: D4D 20m 0.5W
Ant: EFHW about 10m long wire near window

Thanks,
Adam

the data sheet for the c1162 shows collector connected to the mounting hole, mine shows screw was shorting collector to ground.

Great!  I do not use Farcebook either. This groups.io is just right.

The barrel or the external ring of the power connector should be grounded so it is okay to touch the plated dc jack hole.

For TO-126 package transistors like Q4, the hole has insulation already so a metal screw and a thermal pad will do the work of insulation from the PCB panel.

Adam

Ron, I don’t understand the point. This is nothing to do with frequency accuracy. Also, nylon screw is not necessary if you follow my instructions to build.

Adam

found the problem. power socket is off center in hole when in the case. grounding the collector of q4.  i put a nylon screw in to cure it. socket is flat on the board its built a little off i guess.

Don’t worry. I meant Facebook group is a new one, but it won’t replace here.

Ron,

Since the info is limited, I have to guess.

I suppose you have calibrated K2 frequency. Please confirm you did like one of these ways:
1. Use zero beat to test the carrier leakage from the D4D oscillator.
2. If you send 1500 Hz audio into D4D and triggered VOX, your K2 should zero beat two most strong frequencies at 14.0755 and 14.0725 MHz.
3. Send FT8 signal and receive in K2 and compare the audio frequency delta.

Thanks,
Adam

Bryan,

I have a WECHAT group for domestic hams to real time discuss about D4D kit building, modification and application. Facebook group will serve as the same function for international hams.

I will still keep this groups.io group the major area for announcements and file keeping.

Thanks,
Adam
