Congratulations, Larry. The Sandwich digital VFO is a unique design of CRKits. It can work with KN-Q7A and CS-xxV series.

Thanks,
Adam

New Version of "Sandwich" is now available.

Larry Lovell

Adam has discontinued selling the original Sandwich.  I have found that there is still a small demand for the product.  I am now introducing the "Sandwich 2".

It is still a Digital VFO but is now on a single board that is added to an Arduino Mini.  The software is the same as the original with an LED to determine frequency.  It fits in the same slot as the original Sandwich.
There are some other software options that are available on request, such as allowing to two bands to be programmed into the software.
Also, I have an Adapter Board available that will allow the use of an Arduino Nano to be used instead of the Arduino Mini.  Availability is the main reason.
Introductory Price is: $30 plus shipping.  A PCB is also available.

Folks,

Please take a look at this well written manual by Jack Purdum, W8TEE.

Bill,

The designer is BA6BF who is a college teacher. He is also the designer of other KN-series like KN-Q7A, KN-Q10, KN850 and etc.

I don’t have recommendations for the seller.

As for CAT, I don’t have experience to answer your question.

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam
The Manual is written very well. In the Section you reference the CAT Interface is the Yaesu FT817 I use a RigBlaster Plug n Play on FT817 for WSJTx. Is this a plug and play interface or would I need additional items?

I asked if this radio was your development but you didn’t say?

Lastly, seems like there are listings on EBay do you have a favorite vendor you know to order from?
Thanks Adam

3rd QSO with My 2W Knobness Wonder

Adam Rong

All,

It is a 40-m Knobless Wonder I made a few months ago. About 2 months ago, I successfully made first two QSO's thanks to the NVIS propogation, as they are both 150km away. Tonight I heard a very strong signal with my SDR radio and I switched to the Knobless Wonder and replied. He was a few streets away in Pudong New Dist. here in Shanghai. He was using the ICOM 7300 and 100W and I was using my homebew Knobless Wonder and 2W. Both are 59+ signal report. It made the 3rd QSO and I found a neighbour ham.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: KN990 vs. K2 CW weak signal side by side

Timothy Fidler

All seen but I have  MST 2 SSB  from Australia still to build... still in its plastic bags.. and I have a Bare MST1 board plus transformers and IF xtals ..

no need for another tcvr (cause I have a real tcvr as well as the above ) . What I do need is a decent HF aerial and to convert over my old licence....

BTW and may be of real use for you one Sunil Lakhani   of India who is in the kits in a Very small way it seems esp since he can no longer be a middle man for the uBitx40 since they are OOP.  he has built up Raduino units for $20 USD .  I don't know the quality of the build of course.  You could use an Escrow agent to buy them if interested and were concerned re the Dead on Arrival syndrome . If he refuses Escrow then you could get one to evaluate and try again.  If he still refuses then tell him to go to hell.

I can dig out his URL if you can't  chase him down.  Ham Radio Kits India Ebay search or something like that...

I 'll give it a quick go now.

SInce the name I gave is slightly out .. It is a good thing.  https://amateurradiokits.in/product/raduino-clone/

Now he lists it as out of stock. .. I have the feeling he could be a bit fly by night  this guy. How that translates into Mandarin I don't know but it means a beast of the darkness as it were. I'm basing this on the fact that he seems to have quite abit of other fast moving stuff out of stock plus the photos on this are rubbish.  You'd need to get a full spec on what sort of encoder is required. Why does he not have a PDF of the original Raduino. He just seems a bit inept. However the unit could be useful for you.

I'm guessing he has a tie in with  HFSignals ie the redoubtable Ashhar Farhan  -perhaps he takes the odd bit excess stock but he has no reliable supply chain. Up to you if you want to investigate. BTW the Rupee is NOT convertible. All Indian external transactions are normally done in USD. Don't ask, I know.

I am working with the designer on the English menu items and operating manual update. Also, a few bug fixes and feature enhancements will be incorporated in the new firmware.

Note that this is not a new product and hundreds of radios are already sold in the past.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: D4D for 20 meters - Continuously Switches Between Transmit and Receive on Power UP

Tate Jackson N3BXZ

Adam,

Yes, per the instructions and the BOM Spreadsheet I did use a 105 cap at C5.  That is the only mod/change I made.

Also, I have already started building the second Kit I purchased from you, so I can't swap in the relay ( I need a working digital transceiver for another project I am working on with a middle schooler and I don't want to keep them waiting too much longer.)  If you think it could be a relay issue,  I can buy another one and try it.

Thanks

Tate

Nigel,

Thanks for responding.  I have tried several different sets of cables and multiple USB sound cards with the same result.  So I don't think that is the issue.  I even used the cables supplied with the D4D kit on another DSB transceiver kit I built, and they worked fine.  I have adjusted the audio levels using the Windows OS audio controls with no change.  Still no sweet spot to get the relay to work reliably  I did try the D4D on another computer that I have been using with another DSB digital transceiver.  I simply replaced the other transceiver with the D4D using the same cables and USB sound card that was working with the other DSB radio and the D4D would not receive or activate the relay with I clicked the Tune or Transmit buttons in WSJT-X.  I swapped the original DSB transceiver back in and I was able to make a contact.  With the D4D connected back to the original computer I was using for testing on my bench,  the D4D receives signals and has the same clicking relay issue.

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but when I use the tune button or the transmit button in WSJT-x and the clicking starts, the only way to get the clicking to stop is to reduce the computer volume down to Zero. Clicking the Tune Button or the Transmit button on WSJT-X will not stop the D4D from transmitting/clicking. I am totally baffled as to what I did/am doing wrong.

Thanks

Tate

Tate,

Also, please confirm if you have implemented IMD modification. If yes, is it modified by a single 105 cap? The older resistor divider modification is easy to get impacted by RFI.

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Tate,

What's your setup, are you driving the D4D from a PC, tablet or phone.
What flavour is your sound card?

Things I have noticed are cheap USB cables introduce noise into both the PC and the sound card.
This presents itself by the mouse freezing for me. Winding both audio cables balun style also helped.
You could also try some fine adjustment in your PC media settings rather than rely on just the Digi program. There is a sweet spot where you can just get it on the cusp.
Don't forget also that when you first power up the unit will go into tx briefly, there is no fix for this other than make sure your antenna is plugged in.

Have you tried a different sound card. Mine is a generic white thing that's all over eBay for $2 and works well for all Digi modes. Let me know if you want a picture of it.

Adam,  thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately, the ferrites chokes did not solve the problem.  I installed chokes on both ends of both audio cables.   I still can't find the sweet spot with the audio to get the relay to reliably switch.  When I hit Tune, the transmit light comes on, the receive light blinks, and the relay continually clicks.  I am using the USB sound card I purchased from you.

Any other suggestions?  I am stumped.
