Folks,

You can order 30m JS8CALL kit directly on my web site. Also, I have added Y audio adapter in case you just have one audio connector for headset on your PC. Please note MacBook Air won’t work.

Anyone is interested in testing 10.130 version for JS8CALL? Beta testing is required as JS8CALL activity is low here.

D4D: Accessories Ideas

Adam Rong

Folks,

I put a photo regarding accessories here. Also it can be found in the Photos section under this album:
https://groups.io/g/crkits/album?id=90325

The Y audio adapter is useful when your computer has only one audio connector. Normally it is a combined 4-pin connector for microphone and headphone and it is the same as the connector on your cell phone. The Y adapter will split into two separated connectors for microphone and headphone, and can be connected to D4D using supplied audio cables. It is now orderable from http://crkits.com, in D4D Frequency and Option drop down list. The price is 5 USD. Note that this adapter won't work on MacBook Air. I haven't tested MacBook Pro, but Apple users, you can consider the following Creative SoundBlaster Play!3.

The Creative SoundBlaster Play!3 is a great companion to D4D. Although it is the low end in Creative external USB soundcard product line, it offers great SNR up to ~93dB and strong output to be able to drive 300 ohm big headphones. The big output range will offer flexibility to pursue big power or better IMD. The Creative SoundBlaster Play!3 can be ordered in most of the countries. I don't offer it. The price is around 25 USD. It can replace Y audio adapter.

I always wanted a light weight batter pack to give me more than 5 hours of operation. I soldered the DC plug to the 3x AA size battery holder with power switch, put in 3x 14500 sized (same as AA size) Li-Ion batteries of 1200mAh and it will give me 8 hours of operation. The power switch is very useful as D4D does not have one. The charging can be easy if you have a charger of 12.6V 1A. What you need is just an adapter cable. I haven't decided whether I should offer it but so far I like it because it is so handy. Even I offer it (battery holder, charger, adapter cable), you guys need to buy batteries in your country. I am not sure if it is possible.

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam,

Thank you for uploading the schematic diagrams. Unfortunately I am unable to read XPS files. I run Linux and XPS only seems to work on Windows.

Could you kindly please upload a PDF version of the schematic diagrams? PDF files work everywhere.

Thanks,

D4D: 80m 3.573MHz orderable

Adam Rong

Folks,

Besides 30m 10.130MHz for JS8Call, I have tested building 2 kits this weekend and I am ready to take orders for 80m 3.573MHz for FT8. Although the propagation is not good for 80m in Summer, Countries like Australia and New Zealand might have some chance to communicate. Also, this kit can be a replacement for 80m ARDF transmitter if you connect an audio source of CW tone considering its low price (I haven't tested yet but I assume it is useful on this purpose). Please place order directly from:
http://crkits.com

Thanks,
Adam

D4D: 2nd shipment

Adam Rong

Folks,

I just shipped the 2nd lot yesterday. The tracking numbers are updated partially. I will complete it tonight.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: D4D: 2nd shipment

Adam Rong

I just updated all the tracking numbers in the 2nd shipment. Now I focus on improving the full manual.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: HF DF Receiver

Adam Rong

Melvyn,

If you download the manual, you will see the modification to 40m. Following the same rule, you will need to modify the magnetic rod coil tank, the preselector, but you don't have to modify the oscillator as the default frequency is 1/2 of the working frequency.

R3500D English manual including part list, modification instruction to 40-meter band and photo of the PCB assembly

Adam

The perfboards

Adam.

I like perfboards but have never seen one like the one you used to build your DSB FTB rig.
Any clue on how to find one like that?

Re: The perfboards

Adam Rong

The perf board is designed and customized by myself. I call it Choc perf board. If you need samples, please PayPal to rongxh@... 2 USD each, plus shipping 5 USD each time.

This article about this perf board was published in Amateur Radio magazine in Wireless Institute of Australia, FYI.

Welllllll  ....yes... its official.... I am not qualified to operate this appliance.

I had some Choc Perf Board here that I thought would be good for experimenting with
rotary encoders.

Seemed simple enough.
I had snapped them apart and was playing with just one  of them
and I saw what looked to me like 8 completely isolated pads ....what you see here in the GREEN circle.

Boy was I wrong.
I had soldered a 3 lead rotary encoder into the purple marked pads and added 3 yellow wires to play with GROUND and A and B in the
rotary encoder example sketches.
This failed to get the desired results and kicked this for 2 weeks.... using various encoders......
and then yesterday I used an ohmmeter to figure where I might be shorting out my soldering.
And then found there is a sandwiched layer where the RED and BLUE are.

I don't get it.......
why the hidden layer?
Why not have the traces all connected on the solder side of the board where you can see it?

D4D IMD

Just got my D4D and thought I read a post about an IMD mod for improvement. Has anyone done the mod and if so did it improve? and what steps did you take? Just wanted to figure in do it during build or not at all.

David,

The mod is highly recommended. Mod it while you build it. The impacted parts are C5, C6 and R13.

Rob,

I don’t get it. It is not hidden layer. It is just covered by solder mask. The interconnection is shown on the silkscreen printing on the top over layer.

Thanks,
