Hector,

Try converting your images to LAB and adjust the lightness channel, this
will let you increase detail in certain areas without changing color, if you
want to adjust color here too you can adjust the A and B channel.

To achieve the results of the samples included in the link you provided, do
the same move in both channels, A and B using the kind of curves
showed in Dan's book, HSB is LAB, theres a great example. (PS5.) This
will help you to increase color saturation.
