REMINDER: Active Threat Training (In Person or Virtual) on June 8

Craig Fifer

In the wake of the April 22 shooting in Van Ness, many residents are wondering what we can do to improve our safety and security in the future. Adas Israel Congregation in Cleveland Park will be hosting a special community-wide safety and security training program on Wednesday, June 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. You can attend in person or online via Zoom.

The first part of the training will cover the basics of situational awareness -- how to recognize and report suspicious or potentially dangerous behavior and threats. The second part will cover what to do if you are faced with an active threat, including how to prepare in advance, and how to commit to action during an incident. The training incorporates the principles of the nationally-recognized “Run-Hide-Fight” approach to surviving active threats. You’ll also learn about the importance additional trainings such as Stop the Bleed™.

This training will be presentation-style, so no specific dress or physical abilities are required. The program is open to people of any faith or no faith from the entire community.

Representatives of the Metropolitan Police Department, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, and the news media have also been invited to help strengthen community connections.

The training will be conducted by the Secure Community Network (SCN), the official safety and security organization for the Jewish community in North America. Instructor Robert Graves brings decades of federal law enforcement experience as SCN's Regional Security Advisor for the National Capital Region.

Register now for this life-saving training at:

"Donate a bike" drive - Sat, June 11 from 9am-12pm at 1818 H St NW #donate

inaeriveras

Dear neighbors,

In many parts of the world that are much less fortunate than ours, a bike can be more than transportation. It can empower individuals and communities. It can be an opportunity for training disadvantaged youth in bike mechanics, for increasing access to education, for connecting farmers to markets. Bikes for the World (https://www.bikesfortheworld.org/) is an organization that delivers bikes and bike parts to new owners overseas.

On June 11, next Saturday, from 9am to 12pm, the organization will hold a donation drive at 1818 H St NW (in front of the World Bank HQ.)

Stop by to donate old bikes, bike parts, tubes, tires, or bike accessories. A $10 donation by bike is suggested to help with transportation costs. Tax receipts will be given for all bike donations and financial contributions.

For more information, visit www.bikesfortheworld.org

Thanks,
Inae

Re: Drone flying in Woodley Park

Dante Kinney

Drone fears are typically unnecessary. As a small drone pilot for recreational use only and as a semi retired photographer, I love the ability to take photographs that I could never take on the ground.

My drone is very small, but even a large drone can typically only carry the weight of a small video cam. To get permission to fly within the 15 miles of the White House is a major thing to do. One requesting this would have little or no reason to be concerned with anyone’s home or activities.

The rules for flying a drone are very specific wherever you fly. Even a flight in an unrestricted  area is typically limited to 400 feet  and A number of other serious rules. The  last thing anyone will be doing is taking a chance on damaging a $4,000 or $5,000 drone to peek into anyone’s window.

A responsible drone pilot has to go through extensive testing to receive a license for commercial drone flying. As of next year all drones will be carrying an electronic ID that can be monitored in flight by the government. Flying in a restricted or semi restricted area demands a complete flight plan given to local air control. I mention this info to assure people that drones almost never have any interest in someone’s house or their personal life other than that of the pilot.

On the positive side, flying a drone is both a fun and exhilarating experience and allows one to have a vantage point on the world typically limited to birds. Even small drones are equipped with good optics on their camera /video  equipment.  Most drones other than toys, use satellite navigation, using typically 9 to 11 satellite signals to position them and the amazing thing is, if you take your hands off the controls, in normal conditions the drone will not move from the spot it’s in.

Finally, a  responsible drone pilot working within the rules will be very careful about flying over people, property , etc.  I hope you’ll find this information useful as for those of us that love the recreational or commercial use of drones, we feel that public knowledge  will aid  all in understanding this useful and compelling  hobby.

Jerome

- from previous message -
I will just echo concerns about the drone flying overhead. Maret should not be doing this without notification of the neighbors. This seems pretty basic, it is odd that Maret needs to be asked to provide such notification. [snip]
