Saku Saku Flakerie Cleveland Park is closed (again)
Cleveland Park Editor
Just saw this tweet from @Tenleytown411 - Tenleytown & Around @Tenleytown411 Reports that Cleveland Park’s SakuSaku Flakerie reopened were premature.
While their Connecticut Avenue store remains closed, SakuSaku Flakerie’s Wisconsin Avenue location in #Tenleytown is open with lots of baked treats. Hope someone will post a follow-up to let the Listserv know when they're back open! -Peggy Robin CP Listserv Moderator |

Re: GGW Proposes Closing All of Rock Creek Park to Through Traffic
Sarah Brooks
Maybe a compromise is in order. Have Rock Creek Parkway open during rush hours (AM/PM) and closed for a few hours midday for those leisure activities. Just a thought.
Sarah on Macomb - original message - Greater Greater Washington, a urbanist, progressive non-profit, proposes to close all of Rock Creek Parkway and Beach Drive to drivers, eliminating a thoroughfare that serves up to 50,000 vehicles a day. The proposal puts a premium on leisure over transportation and dismisses concerns about massive diversions onto residential streets and increased emissions, arguing instead that traffic would "evaporate."
DDOT had estimated that the already-enacted upper Beach Drive closure would increase emissions 50% due to longer/slower travel times for vehicles. We have not seen follow up data about the impact of that closure but local roads that are now serving those displaced vehicles are seeing record traffic and have serious safety concerns. Vehicle donation needed for an “angel”
Joanne
Vehicle needed! A friend who has cancer and is in his 4th round of chemo AND is caring for his mother who has dementia needs a car. His car just died and the mechanic said it would cost up to $5K to fix.
David is a friend and musician I met in San Miguel (de Allende), who now lives on the Eastern Shore to care for his mom. He’s a sweet, loving guy with the most beautiful voice ever! He has an 8-octive range and drew the biggest crowds when he used to sing here in San Miguel. He could sing anything - Beatles, Ray Charles, Eagles, but his preference is the sensitive, soulful folk songs he writes. He’s only in his 50s and has been struggling with this cancer for the past couple of years and needs a vehicle to get back and forth to his chemo treatments. I know this is a generous community. I remember the amazing outpouring of generosity when we “adopted” the 4 Hurricane Katrina families - which I’ll report on in a separate post. Please help this gentle man in need. Friends,
I just lost my cleaning person who had to leave to take care of her mother. I am looking for a new cleaner to work 1/2 a day to a full day one day a week, weekdays, not weekends. We have a smallish three bedroom, three bath house on Rodman Street in Cleveland Park. I need general vacuuming, floors, dusting, changing of two beds and laundry. I am happy to pay going rate by hour or by job. References would be good. She also should probably have a car but not absolute necessary. Start immediately. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I assume that whoever is interested would want to see the house and I'd like to interview her. Many thanks! Celia Straus 202 255 3689 |

HSEMA Air Quality Alert: Code Purple
Matthew
Per DCHSEMA (Homeland Security and Emergency Management) a Code Purple air quality alert has been issued for DC today, June 8. During a Code Purple alert, the air quality is very unhealthy. Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions and visit http://airnow.gov for the latest air quality data.
Code Purple means that all groups should stay indoors as much as possible. Those that must work outside should reduce work outside if possible, and if not wear a mask (N95 or K95 equivalent). Thank you, Matthew Barclay 202-340-7853 Mayor's Office of Community Relations and Services |

ISO re-grouting tools to borrow

I have a small area of tile to re-grout. I’d rather not acquire all the necessary tools for this project. If you have the tools and would allow me to borrow them for a weekend, I would be grateful.

Re: Heads up about a theft/fraud (check stolen while in transit via USPS)
iisentaku
If you are concerned about ‘check washing’ (and, anyone writing checks should be concerned), you may want to write your checks using only special gel pens.
The upside to using gel pens for check-writing is that the ink cannot be washed; the downside, is that some checks are still being printed on paper not properly receptive to some gel inks. You may have to experiment with different gel pens to find the best combination for your checks. Here is info for the gel pens recommended on Amazon.com: Uni-ball® 207™ Retractable Fraud Prevention Gel Pens, Medium Point, 0.7 mm, Black Barrels, Assorted Ink Colors, Pack Of 4 : Office Products https://www.amazon.com/uni-ball-Retractable-Prevention-Barrels-Assorted/dp/B07GFSTWMX Both Staples and Office Depot have also carried gel pens for many years. Nicholas -- Nicholas Smith - previous message - I'm so sorry to hear of your check theft experience! This has become a major problem in the past year or so. I'm not sure whether it is limited to the DC area or nationwide, but thieves are obtaining keys to mailboxes, emptying them to search for envelopes likely to contain checks, and then "washing" the checks to insert themselves as payee and often altering the amount as well. The only way I've read about to minimize the chance of this happening is to take any envelope containing a check to the post office and mail it inside there -- either by handing to a counter clerk or by dropping through the indoor slot. Obviously, this does not guard against "insider" thefts but it seems the safest approach. I've had no losses following this guidance. |

Re: Heads up about a theft/fraud (check stolen while in transit via USPS)
James Linde
These check issues are nationwide. I have worked at two nonprofits that still have to pay some by check for various reasons. We used Positive Pay, which meant all that goes into the printer is approved security check paper and the printer puts all the details including the micro printing on the bottom, assigns a number and other details. A file is sent to the issuing bank that tells them each unique check number and the amount. If one successfully changed it, then at the bank level it would not go through.
Another option which we also use is having the bank send the check to the vendor like you do with some online banking. The Positive Pay system is not generally used by businesses.
