Welcome to Cleveland Park

Bill Adler

Hi,

Welcome to the Cleveland Park email list. Here's a place where you can exchange news about the neighborhood including -- new stores, street construction, city services, traffic, parking, stuff for sale, places for rent, where to eat, schools, and more.

Need a recommendation for a roofer? A place to take out of town relatives to eat? Want to let everyone know about your yard sale? Do you want to get the message out about a street that's blocked off because of construction? Or do you want to let your neighbors know about a nearby magnolia tree that's in full bloom? That's what the Cleveland Park list is all about.

Cleveland-park@... is for Cleveland Parkers who want to know what's happening in their neighborhood.

Cheers,

Bill Adler

Hi, Ashley!
You might try getting in touch with one of the Republican members of
D.C. City Council for some assistance and/or contacts in the local Republican

Introductions and a favor!

Ashley Anderson <ANDERSONA@...>

Who is Sam?

Jeffrey Itell <story90@...>

I may be the last person in Cleveland Park to notice, but when did the Jemal Park 'N Shop become Sam's? Is Sam Friedman back in town?

I'm aware that Doug Jemal sold the "Wait, Park, and Shop" to Federated years ago. But I missed the sign switch. Is there a Sam behind the Sam? Or is it a fictitious, cheap way for the new owners to change the name.

(If Kohr's had lasted, I would have preferred the name, "Custard's Last Stand.")

McCain would win the District over Bush. Even though he has a conversative record, he's perceived as being more liberal than the other candidates. Forbes would be an anathema. Many DC Republicans are Rockefeller Republicans...although some are of the Jack Kemp school. Both groups would go for McCain, I think. Though it beats me why Bush is pulling well.

Just one conservative Democrats opinion.

I noticed the "Sam's" sign a couple of months ago.  Is Kohr's out of business already?  I missed that.

Re: Pretzels and Crown

Meanwhile, every now and then I see somebody going into the former Crown
bookstore, which has been vacant for some time. Does anybody know if
there's another store --or coffee shop, sigh-- going in there?
I understand that Spices is expanding into the former Crown space
adjacent to it.

One of the blurbs for this list-serve mentioned that we could ask
each other to recommend roofers. I need a good one. Any good experiences
out there? Thanks, Ralph

The best I have found and most reliable has been L & M Contracting at 202-829-2580.  They are not cheap, but they do an excellent job.  Once they even told me to use someone else for my very small job because they would be too expensive.

Re: Pretzels and Crown

Stephanie Faul <steph@...>

Alan Darby, 202/363-6534 is good and knows slate roofs. Plus he's a nice
guy and keeps bees for a hobby.

But remember that anyone you ask to fix your house is really, really busy
right now (the economy is good and everyone's fixing up their home) and
may not be available right away. Also it helps to be very specific about
what you want and flexible about when you're willing to get it. To quote
our very own Bill Adler, there are three factors in any home renovation:
price, quality, and time. You get to control two out of three.

Hi,
Does anyone know if there are rules (citywide or other) that apply to
Restaurants/Businesses regarding how late at night they can operate and
throw away garbage and how early they can receive shipments?
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Cristian Shoemaker

I also heard from Shawn of Shawn and Charles Salon (which is relocating to 3404
Idaho Ave. on Dec. 30 because of a 50% rent increase) that the Sunglass Hut and
the card shop were robbed, too. What are the Second District police doing about
this?

I run the Chevy Chase Computer store and can vouch for Starpower.

Their service is good and they are the best when it comes to networking
your home with more than one computer
