ISO Mis-delivered/lost packages

Cathy Conger

Hello neighbors -

A familiar refrain - two packages were marked delivered to my front porch by UPS at 8:18 pm Wednesday night 12/8. I was notified and checked my porch at 9 pm, midnight, and again Thursday morning. I also checked with my immediate neighbors - no luck.

While I am pursuing action with UPS and the companies that sent the packages, I thought I'd ask if anyone mistakenly received two packages from Athleta and Gymshark, addressed to Catherine Conger at 3100 Rodman St NW.  If so, please contact me offline at cathy.conger@... [cathy.conger @ gmail dot com]

Thanks very much and happy holidays!

Sweet 30 lb Spayed Female Dog Seeks Loving Home

Mary Rowse

This sweet 30 pound dog was recently rescued from living outside where she had been for a while. Her owner can't be located. We're looking for a wonderful home for her where she will get lots of love, attention, good food and walks. She is extremely friendly to people and to dogs when she's out walking. She walks well on a leash and is housebroken. She also appears to have been spayed.

She's sometimes uncomfortable inside the house with the dogs in the foster home so we're looking for a home where she's the only dog. Although if a prospective adopter had another dog it's possible they might get along. She does do well walking with other dogs.

See the attached photo taken in her foster home.

If you're interested in fostering or adopting this sweetheart, let me know.

Thanks,

Mary Rowse

Re: West Side Story is here!

K Ruffing

Okay, I'll go to see the remake, but nothing will ever quite match the production of West Side Story that I saw on a Budapest operetta stage in 2004. A cast of Magyars playing Puerto Ricans in 1950s New York and singing songs penned by a Jewish American composer was a cultural experience to remember.

Long awaited, receiving lots of Oscar buzz, earning a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and four stars from the Washington Post, it looks like "West Side Story"(PG-13) is not to be missed. Ticket sales are already impressive. Directed by Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tony Kushner, “West Side Story” tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. An adaptation of the beloved 1957 musical, the film explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.  "'West Side Story' is an urgent, utterly beautiful revival."  - Ann Hornaday

ISO help and advice regarding my RCN internet troubles / hard wiring the house

Helen Qubain

Hello,

I am at my wits end on how to resolve our internet troubles. For the last couple of months our internet has become unstable in the house. Our service provide RCN said we need to upgrade modems and buy more bandwidth. We did that only to have the problem worsen. Now I spend my days on the phone begging them to send a technician over who sometimes shows up and other times doesn't. Both the remote and in person technicians say the service should be working. I have had the technical Supervisor over twice to no avail.

1) Does anyone know how to request a technical escalation to the supervisor of the supervisor at RCN? No supervisor has taken ownership of the issue and calls me back. I spend hours on the phone getting transferred to a different person each time I call.

At this point, I am looking into hard wiring the house so I don't want to bother dropping RCN to switch to Verizon until the upgrade is done if we do it. I will definitely not continue using RCN.

2) Does anyone have advice / recommendations on hard wiring the house?

Thanks

Helen

I agree!  I have been teaching at WEC  for a few years now. I initially taught in person and am now teaching online. Both options are available. I love teaching at WEC and would be happy to speak to anyone who may be interested in volunteering.

Looking for ways to help immigrants and refugees? Join our community of over 350 volunteers!
Volunteering with the Washington English Center (WEC) gives volunteers the opportunity to be exposed to new cultures, experiences, languages, attend free trainings, and to meet other like minded people in online and in-person volunteer socials throughout the term.
WEC is a non-profit, community-based organization that prepares volunteer teachers to provide high-quality educational services and life-skills programs to all adult immigrants in the Washington metropolitan area, regardless of ability to pay.
This January, we are continuing in-person ESOL classes at our location at 401 9th St NW c100, Washington, DC 20004 (in addition to our online offerings). We are looking for volunteers interested in tutoring online one-on-one and/or to teach ESOL group classes in-person and online. Please see our winter flier here: Winter 2022 Volunteer Opportunities
And a video about our programs here: Fall 2021 at WEC
While our students come to class multiple times a week, we ask our volunteers to commit to only one day a week (1-2 hours) during each 11-week term. We provide teachers with a course syllabus and a textbook and use a unique co-teaching method to provide new volunteers with the support they need throughout the term. The WEC staff is also always here to support you with hands-on guidance. We have your back every step of the way!
The winter term begins January 18th (and runs through the week of March 31st). We require all volunteers to be fluent English speakers and at least 18 years old to participate. No teaching experience is necessary. WEC asks that all volunteers (new and returning) participate in our FREE online trainings prior to their first class. For anyone interested in teaching in-person, please note we require proof of vaccination(s) and masks in the building at all times for staff, students, and volunteers. To apply please do so here: Winter 2022 Volunteer Form
For more information about our programs please visit www.washingtonenglish.org/volunteers/. We look forward to welcoming you to WEC!

Oh, amen to Barbara Bergman and her college consulting, whether it’s guiding essay writing or the bigger picture for college applications. Our daughter worked with her while she was at GDS, and Caithlin ended up being able to choose among several possible great fits. Barbara is terrific!

I’d definitely give Barbara Bergman of Bergman College Consulting a call. She was the head of college advising at Georgetown Day school for many, many years, retiring a few years ago. She now does private college consulting, and is held in high regard. She has extensive and thorough knowledge of schools and the application process. She’s also a lovely person, with a manner that makes students and parents alike feel comfortable working with her. Her phone is (301) 613-0857, but her office is actually in NW close to Georgetown Day. If you look up https://www.bergmancollegeconsulting.com/ you’ll find a form to fill out that will provide you with useful information for your first telephone contact. By all means tell her I referred you.

I highly recommend Jeff Knox at Moxie Consulting. He is a Princeton grad, much loved ex-high school teacher who used to be at PrepMatters and started Moxie Consulting a couple of years ago. He is literally the best and I have recommended him to many parents of kids at different stages of submitting their applications, all of whom have had great success. He knows the business and can help students at various moments in time, including those who are stuck close to the last minute. He can be reached at  jeff@... [jeff @ moxcc dot com]

We had a great experience with Diana Blitz who - along with her two partners - runs "The College Lady" college consulting company. ISO Old clocks, radios, small appliances for a curious 10 year old

Ann Hoenigswald

My 10 year old grandson loves tinkering and discovering how things work. For his birthday we want to encourage his curiosity. Do you have any broken or working clocks, radios, small appliances, etc. that he can take apart - and hopefully put back together? Any other suggestions of objects to focus on would also be appreciated! I'd be happy to come by and pick up anything you are willing to part with.

 Many thanks,

New This Week at FOLio Used Books

Susan Price

The December sale continues at FOLio, the used book store run by the Friends of Chevy Chase DC Library. You’ll find holiday gifts for adults and children for the bargain prices of $1 for hardbacks, $1 for trade size paperbacks, and 50 cents for mass market paperbacks.

New this week are mysteries from Jacqueline Winspear’s popular Maisie Dobbs series and Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire books. Also a cookbook of Elvis Presley’s favorite foods, Stephen King’s "11/23/63", Amor Towle’s “A Gentleman in Moscow,” and Gao Xingjiang’s “Soul Mountain.” We also received a donation of Japanese books for young children. (Note: New This Week books are not part of the sale and are priced as marked.)

We welcome your donations, but please note that Folio does NOT take VHS tapes, textbooks, and travel guides earlier than 2020 because they don’t sell. Also, we have to dispose of many donations due to water damage or otherwise poor condition. Before donating, ask yourself if you’d buy this book.

Donations can be made whenever the library is open and must be brought to the second floor and left in the collection area near the FOLio entrance, around the corner from the elevator. See a librarian at the circulation desk if you’d like a tax receipt. Note: The silver bins outside the library are for circulating library books only. Please do not put donations in them.

FOLio, run by volunteers, is open every Saturday from 10 to 5 on the second floor of the library. Proceeds support libraries and literacy programs across the city.

Re: ISO An Easy Way to See Which Pharmacies Have COVID Rapid Tests In Stock

my38thst

Thank you for publicizing all this info. I seem to have been able to order a number of test kits just now from Walmart online (impressive online site, deliverable by Tues) to cover relatives who'll be visiting. Also some other items, all to be delivered because stores don't seem to have enough on hand. Also, pleased to understand what DC Health Dept is trying to do to secure large supply of test kits.

- original message -
Hi all,
In terms of rapid tests I also highly recommend ordering a few Binax or similar tests from amazon, cvs.com or walmart.com [actually much cheaper there; $14/box rather than more like $25 at CVS] to have on hand at home for if you have any symptoms or if you suddenly need one because of a potential exposure, or a social gathering you want to test before. It's nice to have a stock at home for use if needed.
That said, I also recognize huge access problems given the costs and I've been trying to push on access for a few months. The good news is that apparently the city is trying to set up a contract to acquire rapid tests that they could give out around the city, but there are bureaucratic delays (See article: https://t.co/rcGvJ6CiVJ).  orth Cleveland Park
