CM Cheh Coronavirus Update: Lifting the Mask Mandate

Abigail McLean

Hi everyone,

Please see Councilmember Cheh’s latest Coronavirus Update here:
http://www.icontact-archive.com/archive?c=653228&f=109&s=27705&m=927068&t=e9e88f3478ef96a84e6da9a6a941197473e9c0f17a04da6fc6e40bf22670a9a5

Dear Neighbors,

The Mayor has announced that the District's mask mandate will be relaxed beginning Monday, November 22nd. We will learn the particulars once she releases the official Mayoral Order, but right now we know that mask wearing will no longer be required while indoors (businesses will maintain the discretion to require masks, however). Masks will still be required when on public transit, at certain government agencies, and while inside schools, libraries, and childcare facilities. While DC Health did not maintain a strict case metric for the decision to lift the mandate, we do know that the District's coronavirus metrics are moving in the right direction.

The current daily case rate is 11.5 cases per 100,000 people, which is down significantly from the peak of the Delta variant wave (25-30 per 100,000). And, even as we experience breakout cases and the gradual waning of immunity from the first round of doses, the data continues to point to vaccination as the chief means to preventing illness and hospitalization: 85% of all new local COVID-19 cases have been among the unvaccinated. Meanwhile, the fully vaccinated account for only 2.7% of area hospitalizations.

Looking at our schools, the outlook is even better. 72.2% of children aged 12+ are fully vaccinatedIn just the first week of operations, 3,076 children aged 5-11 were vaccinated at DC Health's neighborhood-based pop-up clinics. Demand for vaccinations in this younger age group remains high and DC Health is working to expand the number of clinics in the upcoming weeks. At the moment, sites are limited to 250-300 doses each, but this number should increase as additional shipments arrive.

Upcoming Ward 3 pediatric vaccination clinics:

Please note: if you plan on having a non-guardian bring your child to one of the pop-up vaccination sites, please print and sign the Trusted Party Consent and Verification Form(one form per child).

November 19th at 3:30 pm: Janney Elementary School (4130 Albemarle St NW)

  • November 23rd (Time TBD): Janney Elementary School (4130 Albemarle St NW)
  • December 2nd (Time TBD): The Palisades Recreation Center (5200 Sherier Pl NW)

It has been incredibly heartening to see so many eager families and happy children at our Ward 3 pop-up clinics. After seeing some parents turned away at the end of the line after all the doses were accounted for, I would like to stress that families should not feel limited to only pursuing the walk-up clinics. The search engine vaccines.gov is a great resource in terms of showing available vaccine appointments for adults and children at local pharmacies, hospitals, healthcare providers, etc. If the walk-up clinics remain the best option for your family, you will find it helpful to follow the City Administrator on Twitter (@DC_OCA) where he reports available doses at local clinics in real time as well as when sites reach capacity.

Regards,

Mary

Tips for Admission to Glenstone Museum without Reservation?

waspwaist69

I just made a first visit to Glenstone Museum in Potomac, with a reservation placed on September 1.  A visitor from out of town next month would really like to visit, but reservations for December are long closed.  Free tickets reserved over 2 months in advance must include an amount of no-shows, and a reminder email from the museum provides a link to cancel because "we want to share our unique experience with as many visitors as possible"  But the website indicates no waiting list and provides no opportunity to check for openings before February 1. I respect the goal of keeping numbers small at any one time, but I observed that it's not a physical capacity issue for a facility with three large parking lots and a policy of guaranteed admission for students, military, museum professionals and their guests.  There is also guaranteed admission for visitors on Ride On bus, which is good policy, but with buses running 90 minutes apart it may not be an option for anyone on a relatively brief visit to our area.

Are there any insights on how visitors (not on Ride on Bus) without a prior reservation might be accommodated? Has anyone visited by car without a reservation and been either admitted or turned away?

Many thanks.

Second recommendation of Robert Tigani. I originally saw his father, and subsequently Robert. Now occasionally his niece, Katie. He is a great general dentist with terrific common sense. Also gentle and kind. Takes care of teeth (gums, mouth) but doesn’t obsess about needless issues.

ISO temporary parking space

Milica Mitrovich <mitrovcica@...>

Dear All,

Our 28 year old son has recently moved to the area and is looking for an off-street parking space for his  2012 Toyota RAV4.  He'd need the space for about 6 months, give or take a month or two.  He lives in Woodley Park and is flexible about the distance from his apartment to the parking space, so long as it is a walking distance.  He does not use the car every day.

If you have something that could work, please let me know and I can then put you in direct touch with him.

Thank you.

Compilation of men's haircut barbershops

wgorlick

Hi all,

I received many recommendations for reasonably priced men's barber shops.

The one with the most recommendations was Camillo barbers shop, at 3921 Windom Place, near Tenley metro. There are three barbers there, though some mentioned "Diane" in particular. The cost is $20+tip.

Also in the Tenley area is Tenleytown barber, at 4627 41st Street, the cost is also $20+tip, and was recommended.

Woodley Hair Style at 2643 Connecticut Ave. also got a number of recommendations. The cost is $25+tip.

Ernesto's at Van Ness near the Giant got two recommendations, and one person noted that he preferred Ernesto's over Camillo's. He charges $30.

Two people recommended Tony Campanaro at the corner of Connecticut Ave & Albermarle. He is appointment only and an interesting conversationalist to boot!  His charge is $20 for a standard cut.

Salon Familia on Livingstone Street near Connecticut Ave. got two recommendations. She charges $40 + tip, but that includes a shampoo.

One person noted Supercuts near Tenley.
