 1) IKEA couch, large armchair and hassock set.  This is a great set for a basement, pretty indestructible, doubles as an extra bed.  Also good if you need instant furniture for your living room!!  About 10 years old, but in very good condition.  Breaks down into smaller pieces for transport.

Dark brown corduroy covers, comfortable to sit on.

Couch: ~94” long * 44” deep * 29” tall
Chair: ~ 40” long (wide) * 44” deep * 29” tall
Hassock: ~ 45” * 30” * 16” tall

Text me if you are interested and want pictures.  The whole set has to go together, would like to get it out ASAP.

2) IKEA office furniture item, like a deep bookcase.  Sturdy, light wood (ash?)
     33” wide * 17” deep * 37” tall.  2 removable shelves.

Text for pictures 202-236-1729

3) Black Gaiam ball chair (for a small person).

4) Steps for dogs to get up on couch/bed.  One is plastic, with two deep steps.  The other is wood, with about 5-6 smaller steps, and is foldable.

All these items are more than ready to find new homes.

Knife and tool sharpening service- last available dates!

Julian Cunningham

Hello,

My name is Julian Cunningham, and I am a local college student. For the last few years I have been sharpening knives and tools for people in the neighborhood with great success and customer satisfaction. Note that In mid-August I will leave town for college, so this is the last window of time in which I will be available for sharpening for the foreseeable future.

I am once again offering my knife and tool sharpening service for people in the neighborhood, this time from Sunday August 1- Saturday August 7. I can sharpen just about anything. In the past I have sharpened kitchen knives, scissors, garden shears, clippers, lawn mower blades (for both electric and push mowers), and much more.

I charge $2 per inch of blade for sharpening non-serrated knives and tools(scissors, garden tools, etc.). Serrated knives are $2.50 per inch of blade. Please note that because tools like scissors and shears have 2 blades, I charge $2 per inch, per blade.

If you are looking to get a knife or tool repaired or restored send me an email [JCC.cutlery@... - JCC.cutlery @ gmail dot com], let me know what’s wrong with it and I’ll give you an estimate. I can repair most knives and tools so feel free to reach out.

You can leave the knives and tools that you need sharpened on my porch in the box labelled "JCC Cutlery pickup / dropoff". Be sure to text or email me after you drop off the knives so that I can take them in. I ask that you wrap your knives securely in a cloth or paper towel and put them in a bag with your name and number on it.

Turnaround time: I often can get knives sharpened within 24 hours of dropoff, but sharpening may take up to 3 days.

For payment I accept cash, check, PayPal, or Venmo. I will bill you via email when your knives are ready to be picked up. Be sure to let me know when you’d like to pick up your knives and tools so that I can leave your items on the porch for you to pick up. If you are paying with cash or check, put the money in an envelope and stick it through the mail slot.

If you are interested, please send me an email so that I can send you my contact info and address. Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Julian Cunningham

Re: COVID testing responses (concern about Sameday testing)

wgorlick

Sameday Testing in Georgetown appears to be the place where most people get rapid antigen and PCR tests, as did my wife and I prior to international travel. Due to the particular circumstances, even with an insurance card which Sameday scanned into their system, we had to pay the $75 for a "rush fee" for a PCR test given the narrow window afforded by the regulatory requirements of the country we were traveling to. The Sameday receptionist at their Georgetown location promised me when we took the test that we would receive an invoice with our test result. While we received the test result as promised, we were not provided with the invoice. I've emailed Sameday customer service numerous times, many of which were not responded to, and in other instances, a customer service employee of Sameday indicated she would refer to her supervisor. But we have not received invoices, which I believe I could use if I obtain in order to obtain reimbursement from my health insurance, or at least through my flexible spending account.

I suspect that Sameday does not want these invoices sent to our health insurance company because they are already billing separately our health insurance company and they do not want my wife and I to submit separate health claims to our insurer. I question Sameday's ethics in refusing to provide us with the invoices that they promised to send to us, and would encourage people to look at other options for rapid testing.

I would note that we did use the DC self-testing system (where you submit your sample to a dropbox at various DC library locations), and received our PCR result in 36 hours. But since that system only guarantees 3-5 day turnaround, one cannot rely on it for international travel, given the 48-72 hour testing window that most countries impose.

Friend needed fast turnaround test for travel this weekend to Canada. Contacted Sameday Health in Georgetown on Friday., had appointment 30 minutes later, test results arrived Friday night.
Cost $75 over insurance.

I got a test at Same Day Testing in Georgetown. Results were emailed within 12 hours and I didn’t ask for a rush job but they do offer two express options.

I’ve visited the location on 14th Street that opened last week, 2 1/2 blocks from a Whole Foods. It’s more like a large gas station mini-mart than a Whole Foods. Some items cost less and some cost more than nearby grocery stores, including Trader Joe’s and Safeway. This article describes Amazon’s business plan vis-a-vis Whole Foods: https://slate.com/business/2021/06/why-amazon-bought-whole-foods-groceries-online.html
The feature that allows tracking every movement on cell phones of customers then billing them is, according to Amazon’s press release, “made possible by a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning.” I see the appeal of not waiting in line, but a friend who didn’t get anything was charged 15¢. Turned out to be for picking up a banana then putting it back in the same spot, but not exactly the same spot. All cheerfully explained and refunded after the investment of time to reach customer service.
The strong impression at the store is that a cell phone with the Amazon app is required for entry and purchase. I understand that, but for suspension during the covid emergency, DC bans retail businesses from refusing cash. But a posted comment on another neighborhood news site say it’s possible to pay cash at a customer service desk

Re: Amazon Fresh Grocery Store Soon to Be Open in Friendship Heights

The poster who mentioned that he was aware that a customer had been charged 15 cents for picking up a banana and putting it back is disturbing. Who hasn't picked up produce at a supermarket, see that it was bruised or whatever, and put it back?  I often look at the meats in a display case, inspecting the quality, thickness, and the date packaged, before making a choice. In fact, for me, the whole reason I go to the supermarket in the first place rather than choosing the relative convenience and safety of a grocery delivery service is the ability to carefully choose the items I will eventually consume. If I need to check my bill each time I shop for items not actually purchased and then send emails to customer service to request refunds, than any time saved from not having to check out at a cash register is obviated by these additional steps. And even worse, if eventually as a customer I simply become conditioned not to touch any food item (which I suspect is part of Amazon's motivation for such charges), this is even more problematic.

Another gimmick from Amazon; luring hipsters with tech, foodie foods, and a venue that's maybe sort of grunge-ish! I see a New Yorker cartoon here.

Re: COVID testing responses

Carol Simons

I just picked up two Covid Home Testing kits in front of the CP library. You can take the test home, and drop off the test sample at the drop box at the library. Instructions say the turnaround time for results is 3-5 days, via text or email. I hope it works.

Pick up from the library: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM Monday to Saturday

Drop off by 8:00 PM, 7 days a week .

Tom,
We noticed the same on our euonymus bush and called the company that fertilizers our dogwood tree. They said it is a fungus. They periodically come and spray it with some chemical (not harmful to surrounding shrubs). I attach a picture of ours.

Good luck!
