ISO full size washing machine that fits up historic house steps to 2nd floor

Laine Shakerdge

I live in one of the 120-year-old houses we love in CP, and need to replace my full size washing machine on the second floor. The issue is that standard washers are 27 inches wide, and the staircase is 27 inches wide, as it narrows on the second floor, so it won’t pass. (Don’t ask how the original got there. If I knew, I wouldn’t be coming to all of you for a solution.) A narrower washer’s capacity is simply too small for a family of 4. I’ve called my usual sources, done internet research, but come up dry (no pun intended). Has anyone else in a historic house solved this problem? Please share brand and retailer.

Much appreciated,

Laine

Teaching positions available at Machar Jewish Cultural School - Sundays beginning in Fall

Larry M Lawrence

Machar, the Washington Congregation for Secular Humanistic Judaism, seeks enthusiastic teachers for our Jewish Cultural School. We meet every other Sunday beginning Sept. 12 and are based in Washington DC. Our children are encouraged to build positive Jewish identities and to become independent thinkers. They learn about Jewish culture, history, values and holidays – all from a secular perspective. Classes include experiential learning and it’s expected we will have a small number of field trips.

In-person JCS classes have met at a Jewish day school in northwest DC near 16th Street NW, and we plan to resume classes there again this year, under prudent, safe conditions of course.

We're looking for excited, energetic teachers with some background in Judaism or Jewish Education. We plan to meet in person. The position pays $80/session. Classes are 1.5 hours (10AM – 11:30AM) plus a 30 minute teacher meeting before class (9:30AM – 10AM).

With Rabbi Jeremy Kridel as JCS Director, this will be an exciting year. Teachers are needed for various grades (tots through B'Mitzvah).

Please send your resume and a cover note to education@... [education @ machar dot org] ASAP if you're interested!

Nanny Available for new family - late August or September

Our situation has changed so we're looking to help our nanny Amparo find a new family. She is looking for a full-time (minimum 35 hours) position starting late August or September. She is excellent with new babies and would be ideal for first-time parents.

Amparo is a loving presence for our young son (1.5) and two older daughters (almost 5, and 7.5). I am grateful for her professionalism and knowledge during this stressful year. She is a wealth of knowledge about child development and is a steady, unflappable partner. She takes our kids on outdoor adventures every day. Amparo has been a tremendous help with solid foods and other developmental milestones for infants, especially gross motor skills.

Amparo speaks Spanish and would do best with a family who has at least a basic knowledge of Spanish. She will work diligently to teach the children Spanish which was a huge plus for us. She prefers to work in NW DC where she lives and she does not have a car. She is fully vaccinated and follows COVID precautions. She prefers to be paid on the books.

Amparo has been with our family for nearly a year and her previous family for more than 5 years. She has excellent references. I cannot recommend Amparo enough.

Please contact me, Sara, at selichto@... or 202-841-3387 for further information and to connect with Amparo.

Re: Dead birds: UPDATE and a request to shut down all bird gathering places

Elba Arrocha

I get spookee out when I see dead birds. I do not see many, but have seen two. One was two or so weeks ago and one today. I have seen these dead birds on the portico and at the entrance of my building. The day I reported it to the pertinent person he said it was because birds banged themselves against the windows and fall down dead by the impact. But is very unpleasant to see these dead birds. At least that is the cause of dead if these birds, so he said, but not any illnesses.

Several folks have been reporting an unusual number of dead bird sightings in our neighborhood, and in fact, throughout the region. There has been speculation about causes (cicadas, cicada fungus, insecticides, viral or bacterial pathogen) but no actual cause yet identified. City Wildlife has collected samples of these dead birds and is doing analysis to try to identify the cause. So far, it is a mystery.

IMPORTANT:  In case you have not seen this recommended precaution (I had not until just this morning) City Wildlife (citywildlife.org) has just issued a suggestion that all bird feeders and water sources (that is, bird gathering places) be emptied / drained / sanitized / decommissioned until the cause of the bird deaths is determined.

City Wildlife staff have collected many samples of bird carcasses so far and are not seeking others. Also, despite the suggestion on their website to call and report dead bird sightings to the DC Department of Health (as per DC DOH prior request), if you call DC DOH to do so you will be referred to DC Animal Control, who will then refer you to DC DOE, who will advise you to call DC DOH. A similar circular loop will be encountered if you try calling 311. So, in other words, don't bother calling DC! [snip]

Thanks for posting City Wildlife’s recommendation for closing down bird gathering places like bird feeders and baths until the cause(s) of the recent uptick in bird deaths is/are known.
https://www.usgs.gov/news/interagency-statement-usgs-and-partners-investigating-dc-area-bird-mortality-event
It is hard to know how to prevent transmission of an unknown pathogen, but eliminating/reducing congregation points could help.
However, we know that animals need water to survive. Weighing the risks and hoping for the best, I set up a mister like the one in the attached photo, so that it is spraying over a large planted area & I am moving it to fresh locations every couple of hours so that water doesn’t puddle. (The puddle could become a contamination point it is supposed.) That way the birds can catch droplets from the leaves but won’t be drinking standing water from bird bath used by other birds.
This won’t help the birds with bathing, but it will give them access to some water, which they need. [snip]
