Before I buy a new one, I thought I'd see if anyone has a water/sand table for a toddler that they are eager to part with.

Thanks!

Yes! I’m rejoining our little neighborhood gym this week too, having finally been vaccinated. Time to get back into the swing of normal life and feel better. I hope to see other neighbors there. I’m so grateful that the gym was able to stay afloat, and now it and we need to build up afresh.

The name of the doctor Yolanda mentioned at GWU is Dr Belyea. I agree he is great, although the GWU/MFA bureaucracy of getting to him can, as always, be acutely painful.

Re: ISO Recommendations for Installing Yard Bamboo Barriers #iso

Karen Davis

There is no such thing as a bamboo barrier in reality, because bamboo is a weird tree. According to "our botanist", what you see when you see bamboo are the branches of a tree that's underground running parallel to the surface. So you can cut/pull what you can see or have someone convince you to buy barriers, but that doesn't stop the real tree from growing or what you can see from growing back. The only way to stop bamboo is to dig it up. It was one of the first things we did when we bought our former home on Macomb, because there was bamboo basically filling the front yard. It took a backhoe and a fair amount of time to get it done. It was a fascinating process and a great lesson in why you never want to plant bamboo, unless you have pandas to feed.

We are in search of a yard maintenance company that can install bamboo barriers to prevent bamboo spread in our yard. We would appreciate any recommendations for this service.
Thank you!

ISO: 1. Recommendations for a contractor to install an egress and 2. Feedback on soundproofing work you've had done

Helen Qubain

Hi all,

Somehow my subject line in my last email got messed up and I was about to send a second email so:

1. Anyone had good experience with a contractor installing an egress?  If so please recommend. Also anything I need to avoid?

2. I would love to hear from anyone who has done soundproofing work, what materials / system worked well. Or if you use one that didn't help that much.

Thanks as always,

Helen

ISO recommendations for contractors for home improvements #contractor

Helen Qubain

Hi all,

I found tenants for my apartment - yea!  Hopefully will get the lease signed in the next day or two.

Now I would like to do some improvements before they move in including creating another bedroom by adding an egress.

Does anyone have recommendations for a contractor to install an egress? Or ones to avoid?

Thanks,

Helen

Re: 7-Eleven closing?

Stephanie Gerard

Picking on 7-11 is unfair. Like Dunkin Donuts and McDonald's, they are franchised to local owners, just small businesses. They survive by offering mundane items that people need right away or daily, not just breakfast or lunch sandwiches and coffee. They draw foot traffic but don't encourage lingering, browsing, crowding. They are friendly, not upscale or trendy but add to a diverse mix of retail.

There's a new retail store in the former Wake Up Little Suzie that looks nice [Femme Fatale]. What would also be nice additions in Cleveland Park: a fish & chips carryout (with a fish market) and an Indian carryout; Sweet Green; Ace hardware; a UPS store, the kind that's a sort of business center with copying and computers; a hotel; public parking lot (like Bethesda).

There are about 7800 7-11 stores in the United States. Subtract 2 and there are still too many. I’m sure the staff is great but that was also true for all the other Cleveland Park businesses driven out by predatory landlords. How about a real and locally owned business instead?

Re: ISO Help with bird nest problem

Nancy Bekavac

To avoid the problem returning in the future, get some heavy fishing line and drive a few nails around the area where they are nesting. Tie one end and then string the line to other nails so it blocks access to the space they are nesting. Invisible, not hurtful, no chemicals. Also, no nesting birds. Do make sure it doesn't come untied and become available for critters to eat, as it can kill them.

Does anyone know who one calls to get rid of/move a bird nest high up on a house? Some birds are building one at the top (3rd floor) of the drainpipe running down the front of our rowhouse. It is causing a mess--dropped twigs, bird doo on our front porch--and we can't reach it from the 3rd floor window. We don't want to hurt the birds or any eggs that might be in the nest -- we just don't want it on our property!

ISO interview for German business magazine: How is it working back at the office?

Annett Meiritz

Dear neighbors,

I’m a journalist for WirtschaftsWoche, Germany’s leading business magazine (posting from my wife’s account who’s a listserve member - annett.meiritz@...). Currently I’m working on a story about the transition from working from home back to the office. I was wondering if anybody already had that experience and would be willing to talk to me about it. It would take up approximately 15 minutes of your time, ideally tomorrow.

Thank you and best regards,
